Default Photo Duplicate Issues..

Lets thrash this out here:

A load of people get duplicate 'non attached images' at the bottom of a post in the blue field when posting images but it is not happening to everyone.
People use different methods when adding pics AND some things have changed in the Forum's workings.

Personally I've not had the issue - I used to create albums and load the images into the AAR from the attachments upload manager, for some time now I just go from Insert Image / from computer and it all works fine.

Pete posted an image as an example of what happens to him - I managed to go in & correct it & lose the duplicate.
https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...l=1#post536536

In Go advanced I used the image manager, selected the image, added it in-line to the thread and saved it
It appears as numbers
Then I Edited the thread again and deleted the original [img] line - hey presto - no duplicate !
Lot of work for an AAR though.

Question is - how are you adding photos Pete ? - They are not appearing as attachments as mine do when editing.
(should appear something like not )

And just to show I can - I took out the duplicate of your first pic in mission 4... by highlighting the original image line & adding the image in line.

More work maybe but it is something you can do yourself with a couple of iterations of aerodrome open so you can match the pics to where you want them.
That or we find out where it's going wrong....!

I don't use my tablet (Safari, iOS 12.4.8, older ipad) since some of the website functions for editing posts/photos don't seem to be compatible with the Apple Safari/iOS configuration. The steps are:

1) Create an album;
2) Upload the photos to the album;
3) Create a new thread;
4) Copy the text from the word processing file;
5) Add photos using the manage attachments feature;
6) Insert photos from the drop down list
7) Save

I don't seem to have had a problem with duplicates using that procedure. Sometimes I've had to replace a photo so I've uploaded it to the album and then edited the post with the manage attachments to replace the old photo with the new one. That works too.

I have had photos at the bottom of the post with the blue border. At least once it was because I had an unused. One time I got duplicates but it was unusual so I don't know what I did but to fix it I ended up deleting the post and doing the steps above and that worked. A third time something very weird happened there were duplicates but it had the same photo repeated throughout the post when I had inserted a number of different photos. I have no clue what that was about but again I deleted the post and re-did it as above.

So I'm sticking with the album approach that Dave uses. Touch wood.

I don't seem to be having a problem with duplicate photos. My SOP is

1. Put my photos in an album on my laptop. Resize them and re-number them.
2. Write my AAR in word. Put the number of the photo where I want is as I write.
3. Copy and paste the word doc into the AAR thread.
4. Insert the photos one at a time to the desired location in the story.

Like Paul, I've had occasions where I had a photo or two at the bottom but I go advanced edit to remove them. They seem to get there when I mess up and change the inserted and saved photo with another. Those are on me. Sometimes I have to remove the new photo as well to get rid of the erroneous one but at least I can go and delete them.

Because I had already added it to the wrong thread I thought I would try using the Advanced/Manage Photos and selecting it from the attachment group.

Now it's only in once, but it has the blue outline.

I think I may have finally fixed this one.

There has to be some combination of Browser used, Windows Version and possibly even the Internet Provider that is causing some of us to have the problems.

I did several tests with Keith, including using different browsers, and he even tried doing it himself using a proxy of my account.

How do you attach your images Mike ?
Hi Dave, in answer to your question above -
File upload manager - Add Files - Browse - locate pic in my album - upload - Insert on line one (Always one pic at a time and the pics have always been resized to 20% of original, even before putting them into the document file on my computer and each pic is given a simple number in that same document).
(Line One is always where I had previously put the number of the pic corresponding to the number of the pic in my file. But I delete the number from the AAR just before Inserting on line one).

Hope that makes sence. Its a little more complicated in that when I copy and paste the AAR text, I have already got the pics in the document on my file. These obviously do not appear, but the big gaps for them do. So I always delete most of the gaps until I have just one line space between end of text and next pic, then another line space between that and the next line of pics or the next text. Most of the time I aim to put two pics side by side, with just a couple of spaces gap, and rarely more than two lines of two pics per line, before adding more text.

I've actually put this entire process into a document which I have posted a couple of times where members have asked for advice on how to go about the process. I doubt if my way is the only way to do it and it may not even be the most efficient. but it works for me and I don't appear to get the duplication fairy having a go at me. Happy to post the "Process" document again here if you want me to - its a step by step guide.

Testing again - I shall post just one pic : Here goes starting with "Go advanced" below. - Manage attachments - File Upload manager - Add files - Browse - Found pic of Dover Castle model - Open - Name and number of jpg image appears in File Upload Manager - Upload, Pic appears in "Home" line and in "Attachments" line - Click curser where I want the pic to appear - Insert on Line one (ie where I clicked the curser)

Code appears where I wanted it in the form Bracket ATTACH=CONFIG close bracket Number code for pic bracket /ATTACH close bracket

And no duplication

PS I notice that Pete takes the route - Click on Attach Images Icon - I do not go that route myself and perhaps that is where the problem lies. Not sure how to go about it using the icon so I cannot test it. I'll play with it tomorrow and see if the duplication fairy prefers that. If not then it has to be something else causing the problem - until tomorrow then. Night night all

I really wish we could find out what causes this.
Some in the UK, some in the US.
Nothing to do with AAR posting method - just posting pics period.

16. #116

What is clear is that we all use a number of methods to add images - if there was only one way it might be easier to figure out but as Pete mentions it appears it is a combination of things.

Now, looking at your Yellow nose test post Pete it appears when I go into Edit that no image has been posted. At all !
If you go in now; Edit - Go Advanced - Attachments - select the image in the file manager, & insert in-line that will, hopefully, attach the image to the post, display it correctly, without a duplicate.

Did that and now there is a duplicate.

I even tried going back in one more time to see if I could fix it the usual way, but there is only one instance of the pic, not a second with a 1 added to the name.

Mike if you could post your process document I will follow that and see what result I get.

I've always used Pete's way using the attach Image Icon and didn't used to get duplicates and now I do, but that seems to date from the changes to the site.

To further complicate matters on my last post Dave said that he couldn't see the first picture of Henry De Lacy, when I look using the laptop (where I posted from originally) I can see the picture, when I look using another device I CAN NOT see the picture. So I think somehow that the link exists on my laptop but not on the WOW site.

And that worked, this is what I was finding - that I can edit a post and add a picture and it's OK but I can't create a post and add a picture, that's when it duplicates them.

That worked - so I can't seem to duplicate pictures doing it this way. I have game 5 in the can and so if Mike lets me have his method file I'll follow that and see what happens.
Apologies for the none plane pics they were just the easiest to find.

Very odd. Ok John, here's the step by step guide again - very long winded I'm afraid and apologies to those who have seen it elsewhere on the site :

"Uploading AAR photos to the Drome

There are different ways to add photos to a thread, but this is my step by step approach and it has worked for me for a long time now. Its time consuming and for large AARs with loads of pics, it can be very laborious. But perservere.

Photos -
Step 1. Take photos with phone camera. Write AAR.
Step 2. Connect phone to computer and upload photos to "pictures" file.
Step 3. Create a file inside the pictures file and give it a name that suits the AAR. Just open up the pictures file, right click and choose "new – file”, then name it and pop your photos inside.
Step 4. Either with paint or picture manager, open each photo and resize. I use picture manager and resize all pics to 20% of the original. No need to save in both sizes unless you intend to print. The number of pixels will make no difference to the quality of the image as shown on a computer screen. But it will make a difference if ever you want to print the image, in which case use the original size or better. The reduced size, will also save you huge amounts of space on your Drome account. (see PS below). Add photos to AAR script, numbering each one in the order they will appear in the AAR.
Step 5. Close the file with the AAR photos in it. Keep your AAR open as a guide.
Step 6. Go to the Drome web page and find the location of the place you want to post your AAR. Click on "Post New Thread" and give it an AAR heading. This new window is where your AAR is going to be posted.
Step 7. Reduce the size of the screen showing the Drome page so that you can now see two open windows, the drome and your AAR in a window next to it.
Step 8. Copy the whole AAR, (pictures and all, although these will not be transferred at this stage), then paste into the drome window. If you have given each photo of your AAR a simple reference number, these will appear in the Drome window and you can use this info in steps 13 and 14. Also make any adjustments you want at this stage eg Delete all unwanted extra spaces (pics only require one line for the code. Add bold and italics where you have them in your text as the copy / paste will not have done this for you. Change any script style and font size you wish to – again, the copy / paste function will not have done this for you.
Step 9. At the bottom of the Drome page into which you have pasted the beginnings of your new AAR thread, click on "Manage Attachments". Another, third, window, will appear.
Step 10. Click on "Add Images" then "Browse". This will take you into your own files search.
Step 11. Find the file containing your AAR pictures.
Step 12. Locate the first image click on it and upload it to the third window. When that has been done ( a few secs only) a message appears at the bottom of the third window reading "Insert on line one".
Step 13. Make sure you have clicked your curser in the Drome window at the exact point you want the photo to go - (this is where those photo reference numbers come in handy. I just remove them before clicking on “Insert On Line One”).
Step 14. Go back to the third window and click on the button which says "Insert on Line One". The code for your photo will appear in the correct place. Don't worry about spacing, the code will do that for you.
Step 15. Repeat steps 10 to 14 for all images.
Step 16. When you are happy that all has been included, go to the bottom of the Drome page and click on "Preview Post". make sure all is good. Then return and click on "Add Post". Job Done.

Don’t forget to click “Done” on the Upload File Manager window when you are happy with the post. I’m not certain, but I think things will start to go wrong if you don’t – to do with the upload process timing out.
I think I've got this right. No doubt there are alternative solutions, but this process certainly works for me. I hope it helps you.

PS A modest subscription to the Drome will give you access to as much uploading space as you need as well as supporting the site, which we all value so highly. No pressure

PPS If you just want to add a photo to an existing thread – the process is the same with the exception of the start point – start with clicking the “Go Advanced” button at the bottom of the thread’s page and the Upload File Manager window will appear."

Hmm, interestingly there is now a pic attached to the post when I edit - in the format.

Thanks Mike I'll follow your instructions and see how that pans out.

Looking at my 2nd test it appeared ok on my laptop but there was an interruption and when I went back to look the pictures are not attached but the code is, no idea's there.

In addition I looked at the missing photo on my butchers bill and the code was different to the rest, so maybe that has something to do with it.

The first pic is using a web address and this doesn't show and the second pic is the

square bracket ATTACH=CONFIG]291269[/ATTACH square bracket

And in the process I seem to have created a duplicate pic. As I was doing this I switched the Editor to WYSIWYG and then back.

We should see the same Pete - When you create a post and add a pic it should appear as in the document before you save it. Have a gander at John's post above. that's what I see.
If I edit his post I see the web address in his post and he has a duplicate - if he goes back in, highlights that, users the manager from Go advanced, selects the image & inserts in line it should appear in the config & lose the duplicate when saved.

Pete if you go back to your post 108 and look at the buttons, you put an arrow to the Image Attachment button. The button on the far left A/A changes the text and code for the pictures into how the text and pictures will appear in your post. It is the WYSIWYG button (What you see is what you get). When I was playing around with pictures earlier in this thread I clicked the button to see the picture I was posting and it changed it's code and it's disappeared from my post 124, the one where I got a duplicate image.

I usually use the WYSIWYG button to check everything is in order before I finally post and wonder if this might be the issue.

Well you learn something every day.

I never touched that button before - I assumed it was to format text.

After several back-and-forths I manged to fix post #111

Not sure I could do it again, and definitely not in an AAR with 40+ photos in it.

As a test I am adding a photo with the ATTACH already pressed.

It may be, John.

I never use the WYSIWYG button. I tried it out on my mission 5 butcher's tally post. I edited the post, clicked on the WYSIWYG button and saw the photos instead of the "" text. However, when I clicked the WYSIWG button again to see the source code the "" was replaced with "" and when I saved it I got the duplicates in blue at the end. I went back in and replaced the "[IMG]..." text with the image using the paper clip button for attachments so that it was "...."

OK guys, I'm sticking my neck out here, but I have just had a long chat with a mate of mine and believe me he is a true expert, operating at a Nationally very high level. To cut a very long story short, he says there are two likely possible sources of the problem involving duplication.

1) At server source, which we cannot do anything about ( I guess that's down to Keith and I explained to my friend that Keith had already explored the issue and could not fathom it - Hope I was right there).

2) A browser issue. There are four main browsers in use, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari and there are serious web browser technology incompatabilities involved, with one of those in particular at odds with those setting the world wide standards. The advice is for everyone to try uploading images with different browsers to see if that resolves the issues. I use Firefox and have no problems. My friend does have serious issues with Chrome and strongly suggests that the problem may lie there. I am no expert, not by a very long shot, but I trust this guy implicitly. So try his advice. If you are not using Firefox, try it. He also had good things to say about Edge.

So there you have it. I can say no more - the info is yours to do with as you wish.

This is back with my Edge browser, but this time I clicked the WYSIWYG button first and then inserted a photo using the management attachments, upload manager and the paperclip list.

Using Edge and photo inserted using the URL option...went back and edited the post and opened the "manage attachments" / "upload manager". The inserted photo using the URL does not appear as an attachment.

This is the same as post 3...using the "insert image" icon and uploading from my computer. I posted the reply and then edited the post but clicking on the WYSIWYG button before saving.
