Thread: Matching RLM 81

  1. #1

    Default Matching RLM 81

Looking to paint late war German planes. I have paint codes for RLM 82 (pale green) and RLM 76 (lt blue), but I can't find a current match for the "violet brown" RLM 81.
Vallejo made one, but it's discontinued. They have an air brush one, but I don't airbrush.
What do you folks painting late war Germans use? Acrylics please.

You can use airbrush colours with a hairy stick Karl, it's just a bit thinner than the ordinary paint so you need to apply several coats. Most of my WW2 planes are hand painted with either Vallejo or Lifecolor sets.

I have some of the Vallejo Air colors for German planes, too, Karl. Like Steve, I found that with a couple of coats they cover very nicely, and I really like the look of the color...

    All the best,

I seem to remember a discussion somewhere else on the Interwebby thingy suggesting Olive Drab as an alternative.

Then, too, Karl, if you are doing late-war planes, you have more leeway due to quality control issues, as well as fading and weathering. I would think as long as you are 'close' and like the way things look, you will be fine

    All the best,

I've been using the Vallejo 'Air' colors and they work for me. Sometimes they may need a second coat as I use a black prime.

OK, thanks guys. I'll try the air paint.
Tim; It doesn't look like I can buy Misterkit paints in the USA or on Amazon.

I've ordered 'em from Italy - apparently they were a missed delivery today, and are now awaiting collection from the Parcel Office.
