Default OTTDYM Mission 11 - Hoisted By His Own Petard - March the 19th 1916: teaticket

(Because of all the Database Error trouble I have broken down my AAR into 4 parts. Sorry for the inconvenience.)

Two men struggled to extricate themselves from the surf. They had been in the cold water for 35 minutes but never gave up hope that they would reach the sand bar. Having the large piece of wood from the remains of the boat to keep them afloat had saved their lives. Looking over the sand bar they quickly came to the conclusion their time was limited, the tide was rising.

One of the men, a scientist, had invented a new type of explosive and the other man, an engineer, had designed a new submersible mine using the new explosive. A test was being performed several miles off of the Belgian coast when the mishap occurred. The davit hoisting the mine over the side slipped, the mine swung into the side of the boat at waterline and detonated. The scientist was in the bridgehouse with the captain and was unharmed. The engineer was overseeing the deployment when the tragic accident occurred and was thrown across the deck into the low bulkhead at the stern. His injury was not serious but the rest of the crew working the deployment were outright killed by the explosion.

An SOS was immediately sent via radio. The captain also noted a sandbar a mile or more away and turned the bow towards it before he ran below to assess the boat’s condition. As the boat slowly heeled to the starboard with water enveloping the stern the captain could be heard cursing Neptune from below deck. The scientist and engineer moved towards the bow as the water followed them up the deck. Finally, they had no choice but to jump into the water as the boat was definitely sinking. Before they jumped over the side, they spotted a large piece of floating wood that had been blown off of the boat from the explosion. They clung on to the debris as the boat slipped below the surface. Minutes went by and the captain did not surface. Waiting as long as they could they came to the realization the captain was not going to come up. They then paddled to the sandbar as fast as they could as the water was quite cold.

The radio message had been received, received by both the French and German listeners. Efforts to rescue or apprehend the inventors of the new technology were in motion.

Several miles off the coast Henri turns east leading the flight to where they would hopefully rescue the survivors of the accident. Behind Henri’s N11 flew Claude Lefevre flying a two seater N12. He was not usually in a tandem on missions but had flown the escadrille’s hack enough to make him a go to guy when needed. Behind Claude was Armand Lambert in another two seater. Guy Porcher brought up the tail with hopefully more help on the way.

In the distance two figures were seen on a sandbar. They ran towards the oncoming planes from the west waving excitedly, hoping they were French. Claude and Armand peel off to approach the sandbar from a better angle.

From the east there were more low flying aircraft in the sky.
Konrad Dahl led his boys on their similar mission. Dahl flew a CDL eindecker, Alfred Müller a white Pfalz while Reinhold Schäfer piloted an observerless Rumpler.

Schäfer in the remaining Rumpler also had the idea to try to pick up the figure on the sand but the brief exchange of hand signals with Müller brought him off course to land. He eyes the French craft lowering to land and makes a close pass right in front of it. The two planes fire at each other as they nearly miss touching with the German flier mere feet above the Frenchman.

Before the engineer can mount the plane so Armand can take off, Ochs swoops in. A sitting target at the end of the bar was too easy. He pummels the Nieuport, hitting the fuel tank. The engineer knows what is coming and gets the badly wounded Armand on the piece of the boat that previously had saved him and the scientist. The tide slowly covers the bar and they float away.
Almost coinciding with the bar submerging, a fast German gunboat appears on the scene. Its mission is to save their downed pilot, which it quickly does. Then it sweeps the area and finds the pair of floating Frenchmen. They are soon plucked out of the water and whisked away to the west to occupied Belgium and the German base at Zeebrugge.

(Because of all the Database Error trouble I have broken down my AAR into 4 parts. Sorry for the inconvenience.)
Was that cautionary, or did the system mess you up?
Been dreading getting stuck with that damned error when posting my next AAR

Your mission went quite differently from everyone else's - I like the sandbar without the island backup.
I also like how you used figures to represent the scientist and engineer - looks really good in the pics.

It was definitely 'Touch and Go' for your Bouledogues de la Republique.
You did manage one extraction, but paid heavily for it.
Lambert et Trouve deserve the Croix de Guerre for their valiant effort.

The Adler picked up the leftovers quite easily - that must have stung.

P.S. I like your Rumplers - are they Shapeways or Nexus/Ares repaints?
Do you recall what paint you used for the blue one? I need to repaint a Halberstadt D.III and like that shade.

P.P.S. Votre réputation est reconnue, mais ne peut malheureusement pas être livrée ...

Been dreading getting stuck with that damned error when posting my next AAR

I started right off with a database error so went into defensive mode. The database errors are too frequent to try to post an AAR in one shot. Too much time involved to do it more than once or twice. Can't say how many errors kicked in while doing it. Not fun at all.

Your mission went quite differently from everyone else's - I like the sandbar without the island backup.
I also like how you used figures to represent the scientist and engineer - looks really good in the pics.

Thanks. I got a bag of those figures off ebay to put in the big bombers. (which I haven't done yet then there are all the miniature buildings to get to too damn you Mike! ) Plenty extra for doing things like this with.

Losing Armand was a poke in the eye. At least this mission no one met their end.

P.S. I like your Rumplers - are they Shapeways or Nexus/Ares repaints?
Do you recall what paint you used for the blue one? I need to repaint a Halberstadt D.III and like that shade.

The Rumplers are C.Is from Shapeways. I did them ages ago. If I didn't list what paint I used in the painting showcase then sadly I've forgotten. I'm sure it was a craft paint from AC Moore or the like.

P.P.S. Votre réputation est reconnue, mais ne peut malheureusement pas être livrée ...

    Merci Oncle.

The database errors are a royal pain. Looking forward to when they are history.

Poor Armand. Having to wait for Claude to clear off meant the sand bar was getting smaller by the time he could land. I had Claude spend a whole turn after he landed before he could take off and did the same for Armand. When Armand landed he just over ran the end and had to take damage. Lothar got him just as he was about to start his take off. Another noble sacrifice for the cause and glory!

What a relatively bloodless outcome! Of course, the gun jams contributed to that, big-time. IIRC, the scenario special rules called for no drawn outcomes, but that was about as close as you can get!

And I like the use of RR figurines for the engineer & scientist. (At least, I assume they are N or Z scale RR figurines, makes a lot of sense). Disappearing sandbar & German gunboat are a nice addition to the story, and that's what we're here for, right? Rep on the way (assuming the database errors will allow it-so far, I haven't even been able to post this reply.)

It was a surprising game in that there were few special damages. Only 1 fire/smoke, no wounds or engine hits, just boys flying around with not a lot of shooting!
The last Boom was very timely though to give me a loss from the jaws of victory.

Shame about that last boom Peter, but it was a valiant effort on the part of Les Bouldogues. That sea looks like the waves were pretty high, so I guess the weather, plus the rising tide, robbed them of their victory. Well played - a very entertaining AAR - Rep gun jammed for the moment, but I shall be back

Thanks Mike. The classic last boom will plague me again in your Mission 12! Time to start writing it up.

Your sandbar looked great and it made me smile at the end when it slowly disappeared under the rising tide, a very nice and quirky ending. I'm pleased they got picked up by the German boat, it saved a long paddle.

Really great AAR! For your sandbar, each time it was supposed to shrink, did you take scissors and cut some of it off?

With the tide rising I cut each part of the sand bar smaller each turn. If Armand could have landed a turn or two sooner he would have landed fine and might have gotten off as well. C'est la vie!

Glad you guys liked the receding bar. I think its nice to get in some sort of different visual when possible. You guys with the 3d terrain blow my mind. Someday I hope to get to that too.

I've vowed never to use it again, it makes moving the planes so difficult. I decided I can look at Mikes for my vicarious pleasure in 3d terrain and let him wrestle with it.

I’m with you on that, John. The 3D terrain can be a pain in the.....ars...er, neck; especially if there’s lots of planes. I’ve minimized my use of 3D. Just admire Mike’s photos instead, even if he went cheapo on the craters.

Yes he did rather let the side down on that.
