    Question Re-painting and Touchup Procedure?

    Hey crew,

I am new to WoG and about to get some WWII planes. However, I have been (brush) painting miniature figures for a while.

    1. If I want to touch up the existing paint job like the edges of the wings, can I paint straight on or do I need to prime?

    2. What about the unpainted bottom of the plane? Does it need priming or can I paint straight on?

    3. I assume if I want to repaint the entire plane (desert to green camo), I need to prime the whole plane. Can I do this without removing factory paint? I really don't want to go through the mess of removing paint.

    4. After you finish painting, do you apply varnish? I usually use spray varnish for miniatures.

Before re-painting a whole plane I now will spray the plane with a flat clear. A couple of times I had the paint not take well so I spray first. For just painting edges I will paint directly without prep.

I have never removed the paint from planes as others have done. Thats your call on how you want to do it.

After painting I do a gloss clear coat and then a flat clear.

Mask the windscreens on WW2 planes before spraying.

As you are a painted, there are great resources on planes in the hobby section, resin and metal. I like Armaments In Miniature the best for WW2.

    Hi Ivan,

    According to your numbered questions:
    1. I paint them if I want to, no priming needed.
2 - 3. No, I never prime existing factory painted planes, but I wash tem carefully in warm soap water to remove the grease. I never dismantle the planes before repainting. Too much work, parts may be destroyed.
    4. Yes, I do varnish my repaints and newly painted (primed before). But be aware the decals may shrink and deteriorate in this process. I try different varnishes to be sure the decals survive.
    Hope that helps.

You should be able to paint straight on, make sure it's clean though. Success will depend on the paint used of course.

Unpainted bottom ? Never heard of a model with an unpainted bottom - they are usually painted in a facsimile of the paint used at the time.

    Same answer as at 1.

Yes, I use a water based brush on product to protect the decals & give a uniform look. I have had friends have issues with sprays giving a frosted finish so avoid them.
