Thread: Dauntless Raid!

  1. #1

    Default Dauntless Raid!

Back in mid-November Dave and I played out a bombing raid on a Japanese held port in the Pacific. We put 3 Zeros (1 newly painted by Dave) intercepting the raiding force of 3 Dauntless dive bombers escorted by 2 Wildcats (both painted by Dave).

The port had two target cards, a drydock and a section of docks and one section of AA machine guns. Random draw had me flying the Zeros in defense of the port.

The first pass had the Wildcats flying a bit too far ahead of the formation. The ground AA mgs have good aim and set one of the Wildcats on fire. This was particularly frustrating for Dave as he was planning on Immelmanning behind my Zeros. Now this Wildcat was forced to do a long wide turn to get back to the action.

The right side Dauntless rear gunner is amazed at how nimble the Zero’s are. This Zero’s tight turn brings it in too close, so close neither can shoot.

The Japanese take their time and wait to reverse so to get out of the rear gunners arcs. The slow Dauntless should be easy to catch.

One Wildcat reverses quickly and engages before the Zero can catch the Dauntless.

The Dauntless rear gunners keep their poise and take down the camo Zero who thought he was in a great position.

Again, the Dauntless rear gunners great aim take out a second Zero. Only Dave’s newly painted Zero remains. The pressure is now on me to take care of it!

With only one Zero remaining two Dauntless bombers get over the target. The port facilities take a pounding from the two Dauntless direct hits.

The docks were wrecked but the important drydock repair facility was unharmed. At this point we called it as the mission had been completed. No more bombs to drop and it was getting late.

Sadly this was our last game before I moved away. We plan on getting together when we can. Unfortunately last weekend the weather cancelled our hoped for first game since November.

    More great PTO action.

What rules do you use for bombing - doesn't look like the Ares rules.

One thing I meant to point out before:

You do realize that brown layer comes off Keith's smoke and flame markers ?

ARES bombing rules used. Both Dauntless did a stall and dropped from level 2. 2 bomb cards, 1 target card. Bomb cards just placed for the photo, not for mm accuracy.

Yes, we realize the brown protective paper comes off.

Ah - it's your telescoping stands - makes it look higher than Level 2.

The stands do take a bit getting used to when you have played with the ARES ones.

Looks like you guys had a great time. Really nice paint jobs. What color did you use for the Wildcats? And I was hard pressed to see which Zero was hand painted.
    Well done.

Dave painted the all grey Zero. It's the one shown in the last photo. For it's first flight it did pretty good with 2 kills!

Not sure what paint color Dave used for the Wildcats. Might be from the WW2 USN Vallejo Air set. Hopefully Dave will see this and answer.

Sorry I missed this one! Another great AAR Peter!

This was a fun game. I always love to see the planes I paint hit the table. It’s been too long for me to recall the details enough to comment intelligently.

I need to make some of those awesome smoke and fire markers like Peter’s out of cotton and pipe cleaners.

I used the “US Navy & USMC Colors 1940 - 1945” by Vallejo. The Wildcats are in “Glossy Sea Blue”.

Thanks again Peter! Maybe I’ll see you in Hartford in a couple weeks!
