As written the AAMG seemed deadly to a number of players since the scenario rule is that all planes within 1 ruler of a crater will take an 'A' damage card up to altitude 3. Altitude 3 is the maximum altitude for taking the required photographs. I decided that I would test a reduced AAMG rule that at altitude 1 and 2 the normal AAMG rules would apply and at altitude 3 an 'A' card would be drawn. If it had a special damage on it, then a 2nd "A' card would be drawn and the damage on that card applied. In addition a crater would only target one aircraft and not all aircraft within range each phase.
The conclusion was that this was still too much AAMG fire and I replayed the mission without AAMG fire at altitude 3.
I used three Breguet 2-seaters for the Entenete (numbered 2, 10 and 3 - it would have been 1, 2 and 3 but one of the planes has this big '10' on it). Breguet 2 is the primary photo plane, Breguet 10 is the back up and Breguet 3 the escort. For the Central Powers I used two Rumplers (1 and 2 for the primary and secondary photo planes) and an UFAG. I flew the UFAG and the rest flew by AI with modifications for flying over craters for photos.
The photos below are mostly self-explanatory but there are some conventions:
1) Ground fire that misses (i.e., the first 'A' card has no damage) will be seen with only one card, for GF that 'hits' there will be two cards. The card underneath is the one that indicates a 'hit' and the one on top the damage.
2) The text on the damage cards indicates the firer while damage cards are placed near the target. It should be mostly obvious which plane was targeted.
3) The text codes for the firers are GF (ground fire), B2 (Breguet 2), B10 (Breguet 10), B3 (Breguet 3), R1 (Rumpler 1), R2 (Rumpler 2), UF (UFAG).
4) There's one collision and the damage cards have "Collision" on them. Fire damage has a fire counter on the damage card.
The random deployment saw the opposing reconnaissance flights directly opposite each other.
The planes take ground fire as they approach the craters.
More ground fire and some initial exchange of fire between Rumpler 1 and Breguets 2 & 3. All damage is due to the ground fire.
Rumpler 3 and Breguet 2 (it's the card under the Rumpler) collide with the Breguet getting the worst of it. Other than that there's a some ineffectual shooting by the planes and more ground fire.
Then by one of those quirks of fate, nearly everyone decides to target Breguet 2. Bits and pieces of the plane fly everywhere but both crewmen avoid both bullets and plane bits. The fire damage was a mistake. I realized immediately after moving the planes for the next phase and removed the damage card, but it's still in the photo. Note that Breguet 10 and Rumpler 2 do not exchange fire as they are in each other's dead zone (fire obstructed by their tails).
Of course, all mistakes must be punished and Rumpler 2 was set ablaze by ground fire.
Continuing the punishment Rumpler 2 is caught at close range on its blind side by Breguet 3.
More ground fire and Rumpler 2 burns....
However, Rumpler 2 gets some revenge and shoots down Breguet 2. Breguet 3 and the UFAG have a fair exchange plus some ineffectual ground fire.
Breguet 10 finally gets into the action and immediately regrets it. Breguet 3 is in the UFAG's dead zone at close range and flubs it by drawing two '0' damage cards. Plus there's a bit of ground fire.
Some ground fire and Rumpler 2 managing its fire.
Despite doing a decent job of managing the fire, Rumpler 2 goes down in flames due to ground fire. My UFAG is finally in a great position but only manages '2' damage points and some rudder damage.
Ground fire and the Breguet 3 and the UFAG observers (rear gunners) wave at each other.
Two phases with only ground fire that shoots down Rumpler 1. There are no planes on either side with photography equipment.
I decide to call the game but the two remaining planes need to turn around and head back over the craters to reach home. The rest is ground fire. The Breguet 3 doesn't make it.
Damage on the remaining plane, the UFAG.
