    Default Complete Beginner Questions

I am a complete beginner to air battle games. I've never played X-wing or any other games like it.

Wings of Glory WW 2 caught my attention recently. A few questions.

    1. I am looking at Wings of Glory: WW2 Battle of Britain.

It has all I need to star playing. However, in my research about the game, Blood Red Skies appeared on the radar. I looked at the play through video and it seems to me that BRS is more complicated than WoG and is also full of dice. Would you recommend WoG over BRS if I will be playing primarily with my six-year-old son?

    2. I am most interested in the eastern front.

The game is sold out in Canada and it looks like Miniature Market is the only place where I can get the game with a reasonable shipping price.

I looked at the soviet aircraft and they have:

    - Yakovlev Yak-1 (Litvjak)
    - Yakovlev Yak-1 (Luganskij)

I got excited and look at the senior book:

Allied Player(s): Two Yakovlev Yak–1. Each pilot gets two ace skills of his choice.

Axis Player (automatic): Two Heinkel He.111 H (Luftwaffe)

When I checked, Heinkel He.111 H is sold out everywhere.

Q: Will I be able to play any good scenarios with Yak planes without the bombers?

Q: Can I use a different bomber (swap/substitute)? Which one?

Q: From the comments that I have read, people say that 1 vs 1 dog fight can get repetitive and boring over time. It is best to do some bomber scenarios.

Which bomber do I need to get from what is available in stock?

The two websites that I am looking at are Atomic Empire and Miniaturemarket.

    3. In addition to the "core set" are there any other planes worth picking up for a beginner?

Trying to place one order to minimize paying shipping again.

    4. If I was to get a game mat, which one would you recommend?

Maybe I am asking too many questions and should just get the core set and maybe a mat. I just feel pressured by the idea that I might like the game and many things are out of stuck.

Hi Ivan, welcome to the Aerodrome. Battle of Britain set is available here on the Aerodrome Store (just under the wingtip of the yellow Fokker DVII above) for $50. The store here is one of the best for price.

Eastern front has not been well supported, The Yak and a Russian Hawker Hurricane are the only two planes releases so far. Lend Lease US planes can be used. P-40s are very rare at the moment but you can still get B-25s. Soon there will be Ju-88s to go with the Me-109s. Other than that you'll have to paint your own. If you like to paint then AIM (Armaments in Miniature) will fit the bill for anything you want for the Russian front.

I'm sure everyone will agree, 1 on 1 will get boring very fast. You need scenarios with missions. Bombers are always good to have.

Check out the WW2 AARs for scenario ideas. You can always substitute your planes what are in the scenarios presented.

    Sorry I skipped some questions...

I'd get any plane you find interesting. If you do get the Battle of Britain set then you'll want some Hurricanes and Stukas for sure.

For game mats I think you'll want at least two. The city mat and countryside are very versatile. The city gives you a lot of targets for mission objectives. The industrial complex is a good sub for the city.
If you have room for a 4' x 6' you can have any image you want printed by Vistaprint or other sources. I've had some neat mats made from satellite images.

I have not played BRS so I will let others chime in on that front.

    Speaking of fronts ...
Unfortunately Ares has neglected the Eastern Theater other than with two versions of the Yak and the winter He-111.

If you are interested in BRS you could actually utilize some of their aircraft in WGS.
There are unofficial stats and cards available in the Files section of this site for many aircraft types that neither Nexus or Ares have produced.
I have considered going that route myself.

I saw a post on Facebook that implied the Heinkels will be reproduced in 2020. Nothing firm though.
Ares is releasing JU-88 and Do-17 models early in 2020 - they are available for pre-order from the Aerodrome Store link at the top of this page.
(You could also use them against the Yaks.) Keith provides great service and prices.
Those, along with the Battle of Britain sets and auxiliary models, would give you a very good start.

I think any of the Coast/Countryside/City maps would work for WGS.

Last, but not least, welcome to the 'drome from Portland, Oregon.
You will be glad you landed here.

    Hi, Ivan, from Vancouver Island.

Check the Canadian Role Call post for fellow players in the Toronto area (Link: Canadian Wing - Roll Call - August 2019. Scroll down to 'GTA'). Then, perhaps, you could play with their planes, as well as yours.

I haven't tried BRS, and if someone near me doesn't buy it, I won't ever get the chance. As I understand the game, it would be better for playing large-scale engagements of planes with a few players, something that needs lots of players in WGS.

Dogfights in WGS I like to do with 2 vs 2, even when only two people are playing. With two planes each, the players have other options, rather than endless Immelmanns. WGS planes are just not as maneuverable as WGF biplanes.

When playing Battle of Britain scenarios, I usually try to stick with 1940's doctrine, and fly a Vic of three Hurricanes/Spitfires against a Schwarm of Bf-109s (two Rotte of two planes). To balance the scenario, I might sub in a lone Spitfire on a wide patrol to help, or put a poor Stuka target out with an escorting Rotte of Bf-109s.

I have some Nexus planes, and attempt to limit my damage to Battle of Britain for WGS, so I got lucky with the latest releases.

My latest tragic addiction is Battlestar Galactica, and any 'free' cash I have is being diverted to it. As a space combat game, it is unique. Unlike another popular game, where people move miniatures around like airplanes, pretending it's in space, BSG has acceleration, inertial movement, and the capability of spinning around while drifting. Sort-of like... space! I'm badly hooked, sorry.

If you get the Fire from the Sky box set you could get a Svezda Ju88 and paint it in Winter colours. There is a card in the files that utilizes a manoever deck from Fires in the Sky. Otherwise as others have said Ju87's or the Me109/Me110 for fighters.

    welcome to the drome ivan
sounds like your questions have been well answered.
i havent played BRS but it looks significantly more complex then wings of glory so id recommend wings for that basis.
minis availability is a bit of a continuing issue. i will point out, its not to difficult to adapt BRS minis to wings of glory.

    Thumbs up

    Welcome to the 'drome Ivan.
You will find Wings is easy to learn but the devil is in the planning.
The thing I love about Wings is NO DICE!

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Unfortunately, I decided to skip this game. The game is not sold anywhere in Canada. The only options that I found are MiniaturMarket, NobleKnight, AtomicEmpire, AeroDrom store. Out of the four stores, MinitureMarket has the most reasonable shipping cost to Canada. However, many planes are sold out and from what I added to my shopping list, the conversion from USD to CAD plus shipping is too expensive for me at the moment. AeroDrom's shipping to Canada is almost as much as the WW2 Battle of Britain Starter Set.

Instead, I backed the Kickstarter 303 Squadron game. This will be my investment in Aeroplane combat.

i rather saddened to read this. wings of glory is such a great game. the lack of availability is indeed certainly frustrating. i understand why youre making the choice you are. i do hope you will at least get a chance to play this awesome game at some point.

Welcome to the Aerodrome, Ivan, from here over in the United Kingdom. I am afraid that shortage of stock is a problem in many countries because Ares is a small company. We have learned to be patient. The Ares Dornier and Ju.88 bombers will be available before the 303 Squadron game comes out in November 2020.

I have located a Mitchell bomber for sale on the Canadian Meeplemart site at http://www.meeplemart.com/store/p/20...ell-Bauer.aspx

They do have a few more WW2 planes available but they are mainly Japanese.

    @Naharaht

Thanks for the link. I am aware of Meeplemart but very little is in stock including no core set. To get the core set and a few other planes plus shipping from outside of Canada will cost me about $250 CAD for a game that I may or may not like. Unfortunately, I do not have the fund to purchase the game from outside of Canada. Maybe if it will be sold in Canada again. However, one large store informed me that their supplier no longer supports the game.

That is sad news about the large store no longer supporting the game, Ivan.

According to the Ares website, the Battle of Britain Starter Set is still available https://www.aresgames.eu/upcoming-products
By that I am assuming they mean they have some sitting in their U.S. warehouse waiting for stores to order them. The arrival of the new bombers may encourage stores to restock the Starter Set, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitts and Stukas.

If you do not have a copy, it is possible to download a slightly older version of the Wings of Glory WW2 rulebook from the Ares website. https://www.aresgames.eu/2084

I can send you a document explaining how to convert the damage chits from the Tripods & Triplanes WW2 Counter Set, so that you can use them in a normal Wings of Glory WW2 battle.

So it begins to end? I am very sad to see our game becoming extinct. When new players cannot buy starter sets and have to resort to e Bay and gamers selling off their collections I get concerned. When distributors and now game shops drop it I get worried. When promised new planes are constantly being delayed and reduced in numbers I get nervous. When there are no starter sets even mentioned in the announcements of coming soon I get scared. I am beginning to wonder if the advent of BSG and newer games from Ares were exit ramps to divert us to new places to play. Not the first time it's happened. Our game has outlived the average life span of most games. Tell me it's just been a slow 5 years and things will be getting better, the balloons are being shipped and the whole first 5 series are under way along with bags of altitude pegs . . . please. Every week new players join us, yet the number of members fades even faster, not a good trend . . . and I am a devout optimist.

  16. #16

I don't know if it begins. In Canada, several game stores have stopped carrying Wings of Glory, only ordering it in on request, if then. Several US web sites have discontinued carrying Wings of Glory, in the past.

This has been going on for years, unfortunately. Very fortunately, we can still find places to get the product, if sporadically.

And we have this site for the truly dedicated, where old and new players can find all sorts of things to expand the game, with mods and after market adaptations.

Indeed, I agree, but again, the site has become a place for the very committed and the new members can engage the great members we have and work together to attain their desired lists. In the last year I have helped seekers find their treasures but the stock is getting thin. That is my true concern. As I have said before our game needs a deep reprinting, not just one or two releases a year. I know Ares is a small company and Wings seems to be waning in income potential compared to BSG etc, but the game is great, intoxicating, beautiful on the table and easy to play with great depth to the characters and aircraft. I think it deserves a large investment and I also believe it will pay off. It has survived a long time, I hope to see it go on and on. Such great talent and cooperation from folks like you have given the game great legs and fun customizing potential, keep it up! And thanks for allowing my rantings! If I find the Lost Dutchman's Mine I will be investing it all in Ares and the Wings of Forever! Now where did I put that old map . . .

I am still thinking about getting into the game. Would you add/remove/substitute anything from this? The main interest is the Battle of Britain and the Eastern Front. Will be playing with my son and maybe my sister. 2-3 players.

    - Battle of Britain Starter Set
    - Damage Counter Bag Set (4) (On Sale)
    - Junkers Ju.87 B-2 (Sturzkampfgeschwader 77)
    - Hawker Hurricane MK.1 (303 Polish Squadron)
    - Yakovlev Yak-1 (Luganskij)
    - Yakovlev Yak-1 (Litvjak)
    - Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF (Herrick)

  19. #19

I would say that those choices are a very good start, if you have a source for them, Ivan. The Beaufighters did not take much part in the Battle of Britain. Their first operational sortie was on the night of 17/18th September 1940 by 29 Squadron and the first aircraft shot down by a Beaufighter was a Dornier Do.17 on 25th October 1940.
However, if you later buy a Dornier Do.17 and a Ju.88 when they come out as models, the Beaufighter could hunt them.

Occasionally, I see a Messerschmitt 110 advertised for sale over here. You may be able to find one somewhere in Canada at a reasonable price.

    Hi Ivan.
If you luck for the Eastern Front , so luck for Blood Red Skies from Warlord. Many plans for German and Russen.
Also the Battle of Britain is in full use. (Starterbox and Plans).
The Game is on Squad-Base ( 6 Planes) , well supported and very easy to handel.
Only kontra: All Planes are unpainted.

I know that the eastern front is not well represented in WoG. I'll be content with the two Yak planes.

Blood Red Skies does not appeal to me as it looks way more complicated and has too much dice rolling.

  22. #22

Right. The game mechanic are different . Only 6er by BRS count. The games are equell complicated.
My problem are more the unpainted Planes. I play both , WoG WW2 and BRS.
But is up to you and it should be fun.

Within Wings of Glory, you can just fly dogfights with anything, and not worry about the 'Historical Accuracy', but still have fun. It is a good "what-if" comparison to different planes. I have run games with each of the following: Bf-109 E-4, Spitfire Mk II, Reggiane R.2001 Falco II, and a Curtis P-40. These never flew against each other, but it was fun.

If you want historical accuracy, any time you fly Russian Front, you should probably consider using a Bf-109 E-7 or even F-4 variant.
    OldGuy59's WGS Axis Variant Cards Album - Bf-109 E-7

Hmmm... I might have to do up a variant card for the F-4. And, it appears I need to update my Bf-109 F cards, too.

Ok, so Ivan here is a plan: put together a list of what you would like to have, not just what you can find. Post that list to me and let's see what my acquisition elves can do for you, I have a few friends who love to see Wings dreams come true.

I am new to the game and my knowledge of aviation is limited. I do have a big interest in WW II. At this point, I know a lot more about tanks and other vehicles than planes. Thus, WGS is new and I am not sure what I want exactly. If I had to make a list I would say:

    1. Get into the game.
    2. Have enough content to play various scenarios including bomber scenarios.
    3. Avoid/minimize ordering multiple times as I'll have to order to a US address and then cross the border from Canada to pick up.
    4. Place an order that qualifies for free shipping as converting CAD to USD is sad.

Here is what I have gathered so far:

    Ivan - Money saving advice:
Don't waste your money on the Lancaster. Doesn't fit in with BoB or Ost Front, or, much else.. unless you want to create a nightfighter game.
Damage chit bags are not essential - cheaper to use pots or find cheaper bags, they're out there.
Mats are not essential, buying some other covering or one big aerial mat from another source is cheaper. I used green carpet for years !

Okay troops, here's the mission. Our brother Ivan is stuck behind enemy lines and is in need of supply! In order to aid him in his efforts and to promote our great cause I call upon you to aid in his time of need! Here is the plan, we donate items off his list, the elves collect them here in the AZ, bundle them and send them on to him post paid by the Clipper foundation. Sound cool? If you have an item or two off his list or not on his list toss it in. I have found the Russians planes and an extra Me110 and a winter schemed He111 so far, and hey a few Russian branded Hurricanes! Yikes! Didn't know I had them. Ivan is not aware of this action so keep it under wraps! pm me your interest and items, lets try to get this guy flying soon! Cheers!

@clipper1801 (David) and @Teaticket (Peter) Wow, what a kind gesture from a community that I just came across. That is just awesome. This creates peer pressure to get into the game.l

My current sources are MiniatureMarket and AtomicEmpire. Nobleknight is another option, but I think I can get most from MM and AE.

I removed Lancaster from the basket. Will likely remove the bags as I can get some bags from AliExpress.

Based on the checkout basket screenshots that I posted above, do I need to add or remove any other planes?

    Do I "need" Reggiane Re.2001

What about variations of Messerschmitt Bf.109/Spitfire or two from the core set is enough?

Which one of the Bristol Beaufighter models would you recommend to get?

So from the response I am getting you can forget your efforts to order these items, most things are covered already. Several have sponsored $ towards the starter set. I hope to tidy this mission before I fly over to the NZ the end of January. Anyone interested in joining the support team pm me soon, great response from a great crew, thanks all!

And we have a BoB starter set! Thanks! Now to finish off the list, Stuka's, a mat or two and we are nearly there! Thanks all for your generous donations, just another way to secure our game's future! Keep 'em flyin'

Thank you David and everyone who is participating!

While I am waiting for the mission to complete. I am researching and learning more about WWII aviation in general.

Will be getting Aircraft: The Definitive Visual History book from the library today.

With regard to WGS, I will start playing with my son and my sister. Once we get the basic understanding of the game, I would like to invite other parents and their children (from school) for a playdate but unlike a typical playdate, we will introduce them to WGS. If I can get the kids interested in the game, then the parents may get interested and then this will help to support the WGS game system.

    Questions

    1. Can you please recommend your top 3-5 Movies, Documentaries, TV Series about WW II Aviation?

    2. Are any of the bigger bombers "important" or useful for good gameplay scenarios or are they more fiddly to play with than it is worth and are primarily for collectors?

my movie recommendations would be "12 oclock high", "the war lover", and "the battle of britain".
id say the bombers are more fiddly and end up being flying targets. it can be a fun alternative for something different, but id say dogfights are where the fun of the game really shines.

bravo on introducing others to the game. i hope you can generate some real interest.

I absolutely agree with milcoll73 there. Bombers will spend most of their playing lives as targets. You could try bomber vs bomber maybe, or play a precision bombing scenario on a a big table (like a table tennis table) though. I have a couple of B17's, a JU88 and a Piaggio P.108B in my hanger but rarely use them. I think the only thing that would get less air time in my house would be my Zeppelin Staaken.

I sent an email to Ares about the lack of availability of the game in Canada. Here is what they wrote back.

thank you for your mail, sorry to hear your retailer says this, the game is not out of production and is available trough one of our distributors Universal Distribution. Could be that you are looking for products at the moment out of stock and in reprint but tell your retailer to contact Universal to have an up to date list of availability.
I sent an email to a FLGS and they asked me what I would want to order from Universal Distribution. It looks like not much.

I'd be ordering that Battle of Britain Starter Set, right away!

It has the latest rules, and all the bits needed to play the game, which you will probably need, sooner or later anyway, regardless of what theatre or time period you intend to play. It is even out-of-stock in the Aerodrome Store.

PS: It should be around $70 Cdn. As it includes four planes, that is worth the money on the planes alone.

Link: Meeplemart.com -Wings Of Glory (WWII): Battle of Britain Starter Set

PPS: Current currency exchange rates suggest that $55.99 USD is about $72.00 Cdn, and you have to deal with Canada Customs slapping it with an import duty, as well as a $10.00 fondling fee, all wrapped up in added GST. Order it from your FLGS, and quote Meeplemart, or the Aerodrome Accessories prices.

I called MeepleMart and the guy said that he has no idea when they will restock WoG. He said that they generally restock this game once a quarter. I cannot place an order through them.

The store that I called may give me a different price for the game.

I am hoping that David (clipper1801) can help me with his "rescue mission."

Fear not, I am only waiting for a few bits to arrive to complete the box! : )

Welcome Ivan. I've played both games and Blood Red Skies is more of a chess game and not air combat. Wings of Glory is air combat and very simple to play. But as a new pilot you will still need to learn how to dogfight. The skies the limit to what you can do with WoGS, Wings of Glory Second World War.

    Welcome aboard,

    Thomas

    A few more questions:

    1. What is the difference between the core set Bf. 109 and Spitfire and separate plane packs of the same model? Is it just the colours?

    2. How many players can the core set support? 4 players with two planes per player? Enough damage chits. Since there are only four "plane screens" can the other players manage without the screen or a second core set is needed or a copy of the screens?

1 the core set 109s have set decals. expansion packs have a variety of choices for decals.
    2. 4 players 1 plane per. if you mean the consoles, by "screens" you really dont even need them to play.

    1. Yup. The Squadron Packs allow for customizing. You can use the included decals, get some from third-party suppliers, or make your own.

    2. Check the Files section for options:
    My Custom Cockpits for Fighters
My Custom Cockpits for Heavy Fighters

I use the Fighter version above, printed on paper. They work great, and I've done convention demos with up to 12 people using them.

For damage chits, I had people note damage on cue cards, and return the chits to the bins (I use ZiplocŽ Containers Extra Small Square 4oz, 3-1/8" x 3-1/16" x 2-1/16" for each damage letter).

Or use the app: Damage Generation Tool for Solo Games
Note: This says "Solo Games", but you can use it, if you wish for multi-player games, too. It randomizes the selection of damage, and everyone gets an equal chance of all the damage. Just like drawing from a chit bin and returning the chits each time.

A Vic of three Spitfires in the top left (one player or up to three), two Schwarms of two Bf.109s in the bottom left corner (two or four players), a partial Kette of He.111 bombers (two, instead of three, planes. Referee run, or two people willing to be victims), and lastly at the top right, a Vic of three Hurricanes (one or up to three players).
Note: Paper printings of the Forum cockpits for all the fighters, and I used the Management cards for cockpits on the Bombers.
PS Note: The Bf-109 maneuver decks were using the Nexus/Fantasy Flight 'Eagles of the Reich' Booster Pack, which contained alternate Bf.109 airplane cards and three B maneuver decks with water, desert and snow backgrounds. This kept the Bf.109 players from mixing up the maneuver decks between planes. This deck would still work for Ares Bf.109s, if you can find it (very rare).

Game in progress, with eight players and some spectators:

We started drawing and keeping chits, but as more players joined in, and I noted special damage going to planes that weren't getting shot down. I decided to switch to cue cards. Everyone wrote down current damage, and returned their chits. Then, each shot thereafter, everyone drew damage, wrote it down, and returned the chits. Lots of special damage results started to double up, and planes started falling from the sky. That probably would have happened anyway, but some of them were because of special damage like second pilot wounds that couldn't have happened if other planes had retained their wounded pilot chits.

You can see the chit bins on the mat beside my left hand.

If you want a large bomber for the European theater get a B-17 then watch the movie 12 o'clock high.

Any other aircraft game you will need to take up the painting hobby. If you prefer not to paint there really is no better choice for a WWII aviation game than WGS.

Played BRS. It is more abstract and gamey than WGS but it is faster paced and is generally well designed. The way the point system is implemented is probably the one area of clear superiority of BRS over WGS. My biggest issue is production value, namely inconsistently sized airplanes and metal models that topple bases because they are too heavy. There were also significantly off point values for some aircraft and Warlord does not make finding errata easy. They paid attention and did fix the rules issue though. I will look at BRS again if a second edition is released. Warlord tends to beta test through their first edition released.

I just hope Ares finally produces Corsairs...

@Mike - Awesome pictures! Thank you for the detailed description.

@Scott - I am set on WoG rather than BRS.

    David and everyone who participated!

Thank you very much for taking the time and putting in the effort to get these items together! Especially the planes that are not sold in stores. Thank you for including the paper mats. I had no idea they existed.

I think that we will have a blast playing this game. Once we will get the basics I hope to get a few kids to involve in the game as well.

I’ve recently heard a story about an American teenager who had no idea what World War II or I was. I think that games like WoG are a good way not only for kids to have fun but also to educate them about our history.

Very excited to play the game.

Are there any good acrylic replacement rulers for WWII? I assume that the core set rules will last for a while but just curious if there are any other tules like the ones from aerodrome accessories for WW I and Tripod.
