Default DYM OTT Mission 11 - Flash Hoisted by His Own Petard - 19th March 1916

"This is a special mission chaps" started Uncle, "Aren't they all" he continued with a smile "But HQ is demanding maximum effort on this one so something is definitely up."
"Apparently some silly buggers testing sea mines up the coast have managed to blow themselves up and sink their own boat. They've survived however and a couple of the bright sparks are now sat on an island off the Dutch coast." He glanced about the office at the gathered faces "Neutral territory as you know."
"So what, you say, so what indeed. Well whatever it is HQ are saying it's imperative that we go and fetch them off so these chaps must be bloody important to someone.
Problem is this island is too small to land on but at low water a socking great sand bar is exposed - bit like in the Camel estuary if any of you have been there - it's pretty solid sand I'm told and it should be OK to land on, it's just that low water is in the next hour and an hour or so after that it starts coming in pretty rapidly so we have to get cracking if we want to get this done, and no, we can't leave them until the next tide or they'll get pinched by the locals or the bally Hun will swoop in and scoop them up."

"Right, here's a snap of the island & the spit of sand taken at low tide so you know what you're looking for - prevailing wind is from the south west they tell me - the photo is oriented north - we'll send three tandems escorted by three scouts, hopefully that'll give us a chance to get them off. Well I completely stuffed the landing, then re-read the rules to make sure I wouldn't do it again - So what happened ?
Well, non the worse for his dip in the sea and assisted by the two hapless scientist Lt Bull retrieved his Lewis gun, a spare pan of ammo and made it back onto the sandbar (just in case the Huns got in next). Once 2Lt Hale had landed they helped turn his aircraft around and after a quick discussion Bull took command of the FEe, crammed the scientists into the front of the nacelle, got Hale aboard in the cockpit, sat on his lap and took the controls. It was cramped and not easy but doable, the weight not being a problem, and all he had to do then was get off the deck without getting shot to smithers and run like fun for home at wave top height. Simples !

Used my Altitude rules, ammo rules, usual stuff.

There is an Alternate ending if you don't like that one ...

Well done chaps, that's the way to do it, pull 'em out right under Fritz's nose.
Pity you trashed the FEe Bull but well done on getting them all out in the one you had left and taking the responsibility for the takeoff.
You pretty much wiped the Eagles out. Big party in the Mess tonight I feel, well done all

2Lt Cameron Paine is awarded the Military Cross for his five victories and exemplary service to the King and he receives a Croix de Guerre with Bronze Palm from our allies.

Nice action. A real dust up. Rep gun is jammed but I will work on it. A mallet works well - so I hear tell.

Just finished my version. A draw with the edge to the Entente for getting the scientist while the CP only picked up the technician but we did capture one of the Italian pilots.

Thanks chaps. I thought I had overdone things with so many aircraft but it all went swimmingly, so to speak !
I basically put an escorting DH2 with each tandem and randomly diced the Eagles who led with the Albatros C.I, followed by the first pair of Eindeckers & then the second pair arrived followed by the second Albatros. I thought that the Bulldogs were under the cosh from the kick off as the Alb had a slight lead on them heading for the island - luckily they managed to knock him down or things might have turned out very different.
I was hoping the Fee's would be the distraction and the BE would slip in and snatch away the scientist or pick up the spare but it walked into a firestorm and barely made it back itself. Best laid plans and first contact with the enemy and all that !
I properly messed up Bull's landing too, forgot there was a straight after the dive so over ran and took the dunking - I aborted Hale's landing and went round, the surviving Albatros also had a go round on his first attempt. As there was no obstruction Hale got in at the end of turn seven as the scouts were bugging out, they spent turns eight and nine loading the pax and took off on turn ten - so even if they'd left blokes on the deck as in the alternate ending the Eagles would not have had the opportunity to get down and off again before the tide claimed the landing ground. Damned sneaky these Bulldogs !
Whilst cramped this method is doable I think, the payload for the machine is over 500lb so the weight was not an issue. It was my only option after the loss of the first Fee and the BE being forced to leave, so worth giving it a try, I was only worried they'd get trashed by the Albatros on the takeoff - that would have been just my luck !
Big up to Rob for the scenario

They are made from the excess print area that was around the rulers after all were punched out Gary, so, correct length, colours and marking to fit in with the game. Your eyes do not play tricks

Figured I must have missed a post or two in the last week and was pleased to find this one this morning.
You certainly had a sky full!

Tough outing for my Adler brethren, that's for sure.
I had considered using Fees in my version, but figured untrained passengers would freak out in the forward cockpit
    and went with Be2s instead.

I looked for the alternate ending but could not find it.
(and that's all the typing I can manage.) Time for pain pills methinks ..

Excellent game, lots of planes, lots of action, lots of kills, what more could we ask for, oh I know, a plane landing on water, shame he didn't have floats.

An action packed report and no mistake, lots of fun to read as well and what a white wash for the poor Hun, and I was cheering on Otto Hengl in the dirty red Fokker, he always seemed to be in the thick of it, until he got shot down of course.

I used Albatros C1's for the German 2 seaters but I thought they only had a rear gun and it was the later versions that had a front gun as well. Oh bugger, it's too late to replay the game so they'll just have to lodge an official complaint with the umpire, who just happens to be me.

    Nice one Dave
