Looks excellent Robert. Love the bullet holes.

Dave, you sure get a lot done while under MO restrictions...
Great work on Hunter’s Shapeways.
Robert, That Snoopy looks perfect.
Nice!
Naturally, I prefer your ships as they are now, ie with NO SAILS!!!!!

Top-notch Ken.
Roughing out a couple of Martian cylinders for Tripods and Triplanes - will likely use one in our gaming tomorrow at our monthly get-together. We recently had an oriental rug cleaned, and it came back from the cleaner rolled around this 4-inch-diameter/3-foot-long cardboard tube...talk about serendipity! I had already purchased a piece of 4-inch-diameter PVC drain pipe for the same purpose, but the cardboard one seemed easier to use in all respects. The first picture shows the tube with a Scarab next to it for size...
Here is the first 'buried' cylinder I cut from the tube...
...and here's the second...
...each a bit different in buried attitude. I plan on mounting them on bases and using papier mache to build up the dirt and cover the tubes so they have a roughened appearance described by Wells in TWOTW. I am toying with putting a battery-operated green light inside them so they have that otherworldly glow Wells describes, too, but we shall see how that goes. More pictures as things come together.
All the best,
Matt
PS - Wells describes the cylinders as being 30 yards across. At 1/200 scale that's roughly 5.4 inches...but I think 4 inches is close enough to give a proper 'feel' to things - plus, things come in 4-inch measurements (I looked for 5-inch things and came up empty-handed)
Now that's how you recycle things!
Hmmm, it does make sense for the cylinders to be made out of containers used for shipping.
Matt, those scarabs/cylinders are really well done!

Holy moley this thread.
Great idea for those cylinders Matt. Always great to recycle something that would just be thrown away.
Nice idea for the Martians. Tim, concerning the sails, I NEED the rigging as those plastic masts are going to break real quick without support. Also as it is a combat game where the ships are under sail..Well gotta put em in. One thing I will do though is make sure they are curved. Seen a few on You Tube where they just glue the top to the spar and let em hang straight down, nope...looks too odd to me.
Looking forward to those Cylinders Matt.
Rob.

Great idea for the cylinders Matt!
Stylish idea for the cylinders Matt. Your prototype has me thinking about some scrap PVC.
The Massacre of Mankind has a scene of the Martian city with numerous structures, valleys and cylinders . . . makes for a challenging play mat, toss in some red vine fabric mesh and a few tanks . . .
Very nice - are you going to go for rigging on them? Personally I thought about it, then decided "life's too short" but the ones I have seen done are damned impressive
From circus to serious. Nice transition David.
Right on Dave.
Every home should have one.

Just to show I've been working at something else other than my Western town here are a couple of E111's I built from the Valom kits to use in one of the games that we played over the long weekend.
Sorry this is a bit trixi with photoshopping out the stands.
The 1st plane is obviously Udet and the 2nd is from this card and I don't know who made it, so sorry for not being able to give them credit.
Cheers

Very very nice.
Love the planes. Nice work.
Some amazing work going on here, as always. Love that Dolphin
Very nice stuff. Love the planes in the air.
So I had 2 F86 Sabers I have been going to decal. Here they are.
First up a ROC Saber. Their markings were pretty much the same as the USAF at that time.
Then I decided to do the other one as a JSDAF. The markings are from different decal set I have from MISCMINI. Fuselage stripes are from a ZERO set and the tail markings are from the ANN set I have. Thought I would just do what I wanted on this one.
I was inspired by Matt's cylinder and started looking around at my supplies. Turns out I have some cardboard cylinders from vinyl so I mocked up the end pice on fusion 360.
I'm thinking that a cool scenario for the cylinder would be to start with one tripod protecting the cylinder then add additional tripods in a set amount of turns to represent the time it takes for the Martians to build each unit. Squids could be built quicker and cuttlefish would take longer.
I'm not making the prototype in two parts but that is a great Idea. I remember from reading the war of the worlds that the back unscrewed to open so maybe I'll make a threaded hatch.
Robert, that end piece looks very cool. Will you be 3D printing your final design?
This is looking great, Robert I look forward to seeing how this works out. And your scenario ideas sound great, too - pics of the game when you play it will be great to see...
All the best,
Matt
Coming on very well Robert.
Rob.

I painted up the prototype and the threaded hatch is on the printer. The cardboard cylinder gives it a rough texture as described in the book.
After I painted it I did a bit more research and found this description that says the metal had a yellowish hew.
"The external encrustation of the projectile's outer hull is an ablative material designed to radiate heat from the atmospheric entry away from the interior. The metal used in the construction of the projectile is 'an unfamiliar alloy with a yellowish hue."
I also found this information that will help with putting it into the game.
"Each cylinder could hold five Martians..., five semi-disassembled Tripods, two semi-disassembled Handling Machines, ... The diameter of each cylinder is approximately thirty yards. The Cylinder also comes equipped with a Heat-Ray Cannon to clear the areas around the impact site. The Martians then use the cover of the crater to build their machines and weaponry, deploying a Digging Machine if they need more space."
Looks fantastic. Those who have no access to 3D printing will shall surely go for a regular silver painted jar lid .
Eventually: "The lid fell off".

Looks great, Robert! That passage from TWOTW is the same one I was using to inform my construction of my cylinders
All the best,
Matt
Several photos of my SW:X-W Hound's Tooth repostioned and repainted to use in Battlestar Galactica games. I am pleased with the colors and decals and the way the wear and tear turned out. Special thanks to my buddy Jim (rhodie80) for turning the picture I sent him of the lion's head into a cool decal for me
I have several more pics of it and will post them in the BSG larger ships thread.
All the best,
Matt
A very nice ship, Harry.
It may be also used in your X-Wing games as a Bothan ship
