Thread: Another Kickstarter from Ares?

    Default Another Kickstarter from Ares?

Saw this on Ares’ Faceache page

”We are happy to announce our partnership with HOBBITY.pl to release on the English language markets their boardgame 303 Squadron, coming soon to Kickstarter.
During the Essen Internationale Spieltage SPIEL you can try the game at our booth 3-E-100, from Friday to Sunday, every afternoon.
303 Squadron is an intense, fast-paced board game with scenarios based on the deeds of the the real 303 Squadron, the most effective RAF unit during Battle of Britain, recreating how their pilots fought – and won – against the German offensive. Each pilot is a hero on his own, with a unique ability, that the player needs to use skillfully. The mechanics are based on the combination of a distinctive combat card system and specially designed dices.
The game will be published by the Polish company Hobbity, with its English version distributed to English-speaking countries by Ares Games. 303 Squadron is planned to launch on Kickstarter in late November.”

There is information about the game on Board Game Geek including this photograph, which does not look much like a Hurricane.

OMG! What is that supposed to be? There are red areas on the leading edge, I suppose representing the MGs. However, there are other, rather large, openings with big black circles in them. Landing lights? I hope not cannons. And they have attempted 3D roundels, emulating panel lines?

I bet Andy (Nightbomber) will be onto that quick smart.
Certainly hope "That" flying thing in the photo is only a mock up!

When the game eventually releases it will feature more than thirty planes they say

These don't look much better than the Hurri but they're board game pieces nothing more.

    Hmmm...
If you go with the idea these are gaming pieces, it really doesn't matter if the details are done with ridges or engraved panel lines:

But the upper wing crosses on the German planes being in circles doesn't sit well with me:

Bloody hell, those are poor. I’m assuming the ‘planes’ will come unpainted.

Interesting.... I will have to track their efforts. HOBBITY (Eng. - HOBBITS) is a pretty known online store here.

I think it is a kind of Beta version, 3D printed test Shapeways minis. At least I hope so.

Why would they team up with essentially a competitor? Unless there are really simple rules for a beginner or something particularly special about the game, why? WOW/WOG seems to cover everything very well. Having played a variety of combat simulation games over the years, this seems redundant.

Reading more about this it is different than expected. Squadron 303 is a co-op that is also suitable for solo play. I will be interested in seeing the miniatures. It would need to be playable without painting to remain on my watch list.

That lot look more like a showstopper entry for biscuit week in Bake Off.

Circling around this... wondering about the model count and scale. I am thinking the unpainted model issue could be addressed with WoG replacements. Does anyone make a more compact WoG compatible base that is round or hex shaped?

Those miniatures are really ugly and poor done. I own the Battle of Britain Boardgame from PSC Games. These people really know how to design miniatures:

There does seem to be considerable room for improvement in those models.

I went looking for a better image, as another post took me to the Kickstarter page, which really doesn't show the planes, at all. I found this on Board Game Geek:

The German crosses are not in circles, as I thought from the images previously posted, but include the outer lines emphasizing the cross.

With the scale, and the over-emphasized lines, they look hugh and out of proportion. But, not circles.

The raised panel lines on the wings of the Bf-110s are distressingly unaerodynamic.

PS: Hmmm... raised, or just another bad photo? I can't tell.

PPS: Found another image. It seems that they have used engraved lines for ailerons and elevators, but for some reason put raised lines for other panels and canopies. This image shows that they used both for the ailerons and flaps (raised lines just before the engraving). Wow.

Thank you for sharing these details. The models in addition to other issues with this campaign have made me hold off supporting for now...

I suppose raised canopy lines would make that bit of the model easier to paint (I always find that bit the trickiest part of a WW2 aircraft paint job) but it looks REALLY ugly on these examples...…………..
