OTT DYM Mission 10 – Double Jeopardy
OTT – Daring Young Men Campaign
    The Italian Front – 22 December 1917

The original scenario, by gully_raker, is set on the Western Front, 12 March 1916, and can be read here:
    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...dy-gully_raker

Wolfgang looked down over the battle scarred terrain. Low level clouds and fog lay in patches here and there. He had flown this area many times and new it well. For some reason the clouds and fog lay in the most untouched and beautiful parts of the land. If one could see beneath those clouds one would see a landscape that rival that of the great Renaissance artist, Mikeemagnus but not today….those damnable clouds were in the way.

Ahead of Wolfgang and to right flew a newcomer to the Flik, Feldwebel Milos Kafka, who had been with the Flik just 2 weeks. Both of them flew Oeffag 153s which looked remarkably like Albatros DVa – for a reason unknown to anyone in the Flik.

Today’s mission seem like it would be a rest camp from the previous ones. Fly in shoot up a balloon and fly home and hopefully not many enemies. The previous missions had been hard ones. So far the Flik had a few injured but no dead unlike the Observation Detachment that shared their Aerodrome. Three of their number had been killed since the end of November. The mission was straight forward. Milos’s Oeffag was equipped with incendiary bullets which should make his job easier. Wolfgang’s job was to keep Milos alive. “Just don’t do anything foolhardy, Milos”, thought Wolfgang, “and all will be well.” Leutnant Ryan von Taaffe was the third member of the flight. He had dropped back as his task was to protect one of their observation balloons.

They crossed No Man’s Land. Cloud covered a spur of Monte Grappe. Wolfgang knew it well and felt comfortable flying through the cloud over the spur, but Milos, being unfamiliar with the land, was more cautious and detoured to the left around the cloud.

As fate would have, the Allied Expeditionary Squadron of British, French, American and Russian volunteer pilots had the exact mission of the Flik. Two aeroplanes would attack the Austrian balloon while the third, a SPAD XIII piloted by Lt Phillipe ‘Boom-Boom’ Dumoulin. Phillipe wasn’t sure about his new moniker, ‘Boom-Boom’. The other squadron members had given him that name because he had lost a plane in each of his last two missions through an explosion – hence ‘Boom-Boom’. Well, he didn’t mind if it meant he had some kind of magic charm that protected him if his machine exploded. He glanced around. Capt Charles Kingsley in a Camel and 2/Lt Sam Magee had flown ahead of him to attack the Hun balloon.

To Boom-Boom’s left he spotted two specks heading towards the American balloon that he was supposed to protect. One was nearer and he headed straight for it but the Hun banked sharply to his right and Boom-Boom missed his opportunity but not so the Hun. With one burst of his Schwarzlose, Milos had set the American balloon on fire. “Mon Dieu, there goes the mission”, muttered Boom-Boom, “Oncle va me gronder”.

Meanwhile, Wolfgang was reflecting on the ribbing of the Hauptmann about his marksmanship or the lack thereof. Although, for some reason unknown to the Hauptmann, he had managed to become the highest scoring member of the Flik. “Well”, thought Wolfgang, “can’t really miss an balloon”. He fired….and missed. Milos hadn’t fared any better. Startled by his success and the flames emerging from the balloon, he had also missed.

Wolfgang banked left to avoid colliding with the balloon but ran across the sights of Boom-Boom’s SPAD. It was a deflection shot that was mostly wide – not serious was hit. “I’ll get you on the next go-around, Frenchman”.

Wolfgang reversed through an Immelmann manoeuvre but the Frenchman had flown around the balloon – probably looking for Milos. Another chance at the balloon and another miss. “Quit dodging around”, Wolfgang shouted at the balloon although it was clearly not dodging anywhere but slowly being cranked to the ground. Wolfgang noticed two parachutes open from figures falling from the balloon. The observation crew had decided that this was a much safer way to get to the ground. Wolfgang agreed with them – that is if they had asked him.

“If I’m going to deal with that Frenchman in his SPAD, I better focus on my aim.” Wolfgang skirted the balloon and fired another burst. This time he was rewarded with bits of balloon flying everywhere. “At last”, Wolfgang smiled, but wait. The cursed Schwarlose had jammed.

On the other side of the balloon Milos was having a great time. A couple of rounds of incendiary bullets had found their mark and more flames flickered from the side of the balloon. “M…de”, exclaimed Boom-Boom.

For good measure Milos skirted the top of the balloon pouring more lead into it. The effort was too much for the Schwarzlose and it promptly decided it was time for a break.

Wolfgang caught up to Boom-Boom pushing him away from Milos he managed to return his deb to Boom-Boom with interest….but those darned Schwarlose! Wolfgang had heard that a hammer was just the thing for uncooperative machineguns. He had heard that from a vagabond passing through the aerodrome. Although how a vagabond would know that he wasn’t sure.

Satisfied that the balloon was done for Milos decided that there was more action around their balloon and decided to join Ryan.

Wolfgang grimaced as he saw his protégé meander away towards Ryan and his antagonists. The flames that had slowly been consuming the balloon had died down. What to do? Finish off the balloon or fly after Milos? Milos come back here!

The wind caught some embers and the balloon burst into flames again. Suddenly there was an explosion and the American balloon was no more.

To continue the story we must go back and follow the trials and tribulations of Ryan, Charles and Sam until they are joined by Milos, Wolfgang and perhaps Boom-Boom.

Ryan was envious of his two fellow pilots. Likely no enemy planes would show up today and his comrades would have all the fun.

He smiled. A Sopwith and a SPAD were heading in his direction – Boom-Boom’s squadron mates, Charles and Sam.

The SPAD was fast. Zooming past the slower Sopwith, Sam was on the Austrian balloon before Ryan could intercept him. The American’s aim was deadly.

Sam continued along the side of the balloon, firing as he went. Ryan tried to intercept the Camel lagging behind the SPAD but the manoeuvrable Sopwith was hard to hit.

But Ryan was determined. He dogged the Sopwith doing great damage to it until – yup, those reluctant Schwarlose. However, Ryan had distracted Charles enough so that none of the incendiary bullets with which the Camel was armed found their mark.

Charles pointed the nose of the Sopwith down and let the cantankerous machine have its way as it spun around – amazing a stupefied Ryan – to reward Charles with another shot at the balloon. Unfortunately it wasn’t only the Schwarlose that were on strike that day. Yes, more jam than at high tea.

After another spin around – more of spin for the Camel and more a leisurely tour of the country side for the Oeffag, Ryan was once more on Charles’s tail….and more so since the bullets tore into the rudder controls of the Camel.

More time passes spinning around until both Charles and Ryan are somewhat dizzy and somewhat – as in nearly – collide. “That was lucky”, exclaimed the luck-of-the-Irish Ryan. Meanwhile Sam busied himself with tearing little bits out of the Austrian balloon.

Satisfied with his meagre ability to hit the balloon, Sam suddenly realized that it was his job to chase the Hun machine away from Charles….much to the relief of Charles, who took the opportunity to once again try to ignite the balloon. “Success. Huzzah!”

This where Milos, Wolfgang and possibly Boom-Boom enter the story. Coming in from above the SPAD, Milos dove down on the Sam with guns blazing. “Where did that plane come from,” thought the startled American, but Sam still had the presence of mind to open fire with SPAD’s Vickers. One of the bullets found a vital spot on the Oeffag which promptly exploded. Oh, Milos, Milos, Milos, you should have stayed back to finish of the American balloon. Sam reflected as the bits of the enemy machine fell from the sky. It was unlikely the unfortunate young pilot would survive.

The surprise attack of Milos had unsettled Sam, who remembered he was pursing Ryan. He managed one poorly aimed burst of the Vickers before the Ryan’s scooted off to the right.

Wolfgang was horrified at the sudden demise of his comrade. He had to weight his options – go after the American or let Ryan deal with the America while he tried to save their balloon from the Sopwith which was now lining up for another run at the Austrian balloon. Duty first – it would be the Sopwith.

With Wolfgang tailing him, Charles could only manage a weak shot at the balloon. He grimaced as the bullets from the Oeffag found a fuel line. Flames burst from Sopwith.

With his Camel on fire, Charles’s thoughts turned to escape, but not soon enough. The Austrian continued to tail the Camel continually firing. Apparently Wolfgang had found a chunk of the Oeffag that had landed in the cockpit from his early encounter with Boom-Boom and was using it to periodically smack the stubborn Schwarzlose which seeing that cooperation was the better option, well, cooperated. Charles tried his best to bring the Sopwith to a smooth landing which fortunately wasn’t the torn up No Man’s Land. Still one of the Sopwith’s wings clipped a small tree that had looked more like a low hedge from above. That was the last Charles remembered until, sometime latter, he woke up in an Italian farm house. “Riposo, Inglese”, reassured the farmer’s wife on noticing that Charles was awake.

The Austrian balloon exploded – without any casualties as it’s crew had abandoned the basket earlier when Charles had set the balloon on fire. Sam was near the balloon when it exploded which rocked the SPAD. Sam tested his controls. All seemed A-OK.

Not quite, A-OK, Sam. You forgot about the Austrian on your tail. Wolfgang dived on the SPAD; the Schwarzlose’s bullets hitting an oil line causing smoke to erupt from the enemy aeroplane.

Sam recognized the enemy machine following him from the last mission. It had given both Charles and him a lot of trouble – a lot of trouble but the Italian grappa had helped. Here was his nemesis again and dangerously tailing him.

Sam finally got past Wolfgang and had a clear run for home. If he could just avoid the Austrian’s bullets the SPAD would easily outrun the Oeffag but Wolfgang, the Schwarzlose and the chunk of wood had other ideas. The SPAD’s engine sputtered and the aeroplane started glide down. Sam wouldn’t make it back to friendly territory. No Man’s Land would have to do. Sam found a relatively clear spot to land. The SPAD bumped along, hit the edge of a crater and flipped upside down into said crater. Sam patted himself checking for injuries. None. Then he heard a voice, “Git yer butt outta that contraption, than we'all kin git outta here.” Sam recognized the voice of a fellow Tennessean. “It guess that worked out A-OK after all. Just one SPAD.” Sam unclipped his harness and crumpled to the ground. The source of the voice, an American sergeant with a couple of other guys helped him. “Frontline is jus thisaway”, the sergeant pointed.

Back at the Expeditionary force’s mess there was a tiny of bit celebrating. Sam had his 3rd and 4th kills; just one shy of being the squadron’s first ‘ace’. The mission had been a wash. They had shot down the enemy balloon but hadn’t saved their own. The SPAD was likely tiny bits of splinters once the Hun artillery had its way with it. There was no word about Captain Charles. Hopefully he’d make it back safely.

At the Flik, they were in less of a mood for celebration. Wolfgang had his 7th and 8th kills. Nearly a double ace. However, Milos was dead. The first for the Flik. Günter and Pablo were still injured, which left the Flik with 4 pilots plus the Hauptmann, who, on occasion, had flown missions.

Ryan and Wolfgang were recounting their tale over schnapps with Sandy, Karoly and the Hauptmann when in walked Günter. Wolfgang grinned from ear to ear. He had missed his wingman. “I was wondering when you would have had enough ‘vacation’, Feldwebel”, scolded the Hauptmann who was clearly glad to see the young feldwebel.

Well that was certainly a close result.

Tough break for Kafka, but he got the job done.

Kingsley is out for the campaign - I'll bet that was the first use of MacLaren's Camel.

Nice AAR, Paul. The plain mat definitely works better than the Ares ones for your "embellishments".
Breaking the action into smaller snippets really helped as well. I found it much easier to follow.

    Rep inbound.
I am on the way downstairs to start setting up my own attempt.

Close results are good - a well balanced scenario. Too bad about Kafka but it was only his second outing. The name had potential though.

It was the first outing for all the planes except Otto Fuchs's Albatros DVa (flown by Wolfgang) - I'm quite fond of it. My goal is to try to use at least new planes each mission. This mission the never flow flown before planes were:

    SPAD XIII - Rickenbacker, Chavennes
    Camel - McLaren
Albatros DVa - Udet, Hans-Georg von der Marwitz (Jasta 30)

The Hans-Georg von der Marwitz and Otto Fuchs Albatros are Valom planes and the rest are from the recent Ares releases.

I had thought of putting Wolfgang in the Kissenberth Camel.

    Good luck with your game.

Thanks. Wolfgang was lucky enough to draw some good damage cards against Charles and Sam. Initially it felt like I was playing with 'B' deck. Surprisingly not one 'wounded' card.

An entertaining read Paul and a close run thing. Its all coming together, the graphics and name tags, with a couple of very nice Albatrii on show and as Pete said the mat allows us to see the planes more clearly.
I'm pleased to see the clouds back in action even if they do obscure the work of that well known Renaissance artist, what's his name. and you are quite right to use a hammer or mallet to unjam a machine gun, I'm sure I read it in a learned journal or article somewhere.
Shame about poor Kafka, as you say a name to conjure with.

Thanks, John. The clouds do add..um, er, atmosphere. I will work on them even if it means going out teddy bear hunting (coming from the north country here I'm not so couth as you genteel folk.)

The chunk of wood worked quite nicely. It seems machineguns do need to know who's top dog...er, I mean top gun...so that they know their place.

A 'Kafka' is gone....hmmmm, maybe I can figure out how to get a 'Dali'....the mustache alone would be worth it.

As for well known Rennie artist, what's his name....well, he's become cliched with his work on souvenir coffee mugs, beach towels, cheap hotel prints, etc. He must be making a fortune.

Odds were against Milos with a -3 for explosion and -1 for NML. He would have needed a '7' to stay alive and very likely out of the campaign if he did. Glad your namesake made it; I've grown somewhat attached to the character. I'm sorry Charles Kingsley is out for the campaign. I wanted him to hang around just because he first showed up in a Sopwith Pup.

Nice one Paul. That was a pretty long game and I guess pretty much mirrored most of those based on this Mission despite using the later war aircraft. Again, I like the addition of the graphics, especially the flames on the balloons. That looks really good Sad about Milos RIP
