Thread: Terrain markers

    Default Terrain markers

With the things Clipper does and seeing the fantastic terrain from Dorchester I thought about how to make 3d terrain. While looking at the markers that come with the game I pulled out an old used DVD and saw that the markers and the DVD are the same size. That got me to thinking about making 3d terrain for T&T. Just so happens that a few years ago the Asian market we went to closed and the owner asked me if I wanted any of the DVD's he had...they are Thai TV shows so no loss for me. I figured why not and he gave me a box of about 300. Looking at making the marsh, pond and woods. If anyone want any of these DVD's to see what they can come up with just PM me and let me know. Free for the asking.

Well my try with the CD's didn't work like I thought so I am working on something else. Should have some photos up in the Hobby room and here in the next few days.

Here is my attempt on doing the pond marker. The base if from a pack of 6 that I bought at Hobby Lobby. They are 6.5" so a bit bigger but gives a different impression.

Working on the Marsh and trying to figure out the crater and trench markers. Here are some Objective markers that I did.

Nice job on the terrain Bob - that gives Locust Tripod's the perspective I imagined they should have rather than the 10 meters (32'+) tall - a three-storey building - height given up by Ares

Here are 2 woods markers I did. Again the base if from a company called WOODPILE that I bought at Hobby Lobby. They come in packs of 8 and are $2.99. As you can see these are oval but they also have rectangular ones in 2 different sizes. The longs ones are 2.5"W X 5 1/4" L. I was thinking of using these for the trench marker. Here are the woods on the oval base.

As you can see this one has a barren hilltop. The trees are clump foliage, course foliage and a piece of lichen.

One of the objective markers is for a hanger so I went one better. Instead of a hanger how about a small airfield ?

Dave here is the airfield after it has been destroyed. I burned a piece of wood and shaved the burnt part to look like the hangers and other buildings.

Side by side to see what they look like. Used the Red Weed to hide where the other buildings would be.

That looks a lot better on the table than some flat cardboard.

The burned side I did with a small torch and then shaved burnt pieces where the hangers and other buildings were so it looks like burned buildings.

These are looking really sweet, Bob - as was mentioned above, much better than the flat cardboard versions!

    Keep up the inspirational work!

WGF rather than T&T, but should suffice. I did the paint job, not the design and casting of these prototypes.

LOVE the marsh marker, Bob! Keep 'em coming...

That bridge objective looks like it might have come from the same company that did the balloon base I received from Clipper, Zoe - he had gotten it from Down Under a while back...very cool objective!

    All the best,
    Matt

I got inspired by Clipper's Ploesti Raid, but at a much more modest size. Looking for a BoB connection, Heritage England's "Heritage Calling" article by Nicky Hughes (7 Oct 2019) shows camouflage on the oil depot at North Killingholme, so that gave me the idea.

Sure, it's just some hearing aid batteries and a paper clip, but I felt it had gave the impression I wanted, in the heat of battle.

Yes, my painting is worse than a headless chicken's scratchings, but it works. I'll have to repaint it again sometime, but that's no worries. It can also recharge a Martian as it rampages about.

Possibly a bit out-of-scale for the Tripods, but I came across a number of miniature (Lilliputian and other) cottages.

I'm looking forward to using them as targets, I mean ground clutter, when I introduce T&T to some work colleagues soon.

With the Tripods shown topping out at 30'+ the scale doesn't seem all that far off Terry. Heat rays & thatched roof, mmm, toasty !
