I use a rather simple method. First I block them out by hand painting the basic colors. Then I double wash. First wash is black pigment in a water/Pledge floor polish mix. After that dries I hit it with a Army painter Soft tone wash (Small bottle, not the bigger can). Then finish off with Tamiya dust compacts to give it that dusty look and bring out the details like the helmet netting. Then top it all off with a matt varnish in a spray can. I aim for the wash to give it shadows while the dust highlights the raised parts. On the vehicles I may go one step further with Mig products for dirt, rust, and mud.
Consider myself "Above Average" grade and get a chuckle out of the self proclaimed "Pro Painters" on Flea Bay who look to be lesser quality then mine.
