Hah....I get to start it. Clipper must be taking a nap again.

Got some more Bolt action Japs done for my weekly slug, and some Flames of War tanks for me. Yep, that is a Tiger 131 there for DAK. Then finish off with a M4 Sherman Platoon in 15 mm. Have a slug of Bolt action stuff that will be finished tomorrow so keep an eye out.

Very nice as always Ken. I see that Bold Action has figures out for the Korean War. Can't wait to see what you do with them if you get some of them.

Thanks for the comments guys. Only Korean stuff I have gotten so far is the 4077 M.A.S.H. box set. Had to hide it from the wife though as she is a huge MASH fan. Will get around to painting it some day after digging myself out from a mountain of commissions.

You keep tempting me to get some Bolt Action, Ken...I was at the hobby shop the other day standing before the BA stuff, wondering if I could 'just' get a German tank and a dismounted Panzer crew......still resisting...

501 was sent to Tunisia, as were parts of 504, I believe - I don't remember if Tiger 131 was from the 501 or 504...easy enough to check, I imagine - regardless, they look mighty fine!

Good guess, Matt. It's the first biplane produced by Albatros, the Albatros Doppeltaube or MZ.1. It likely saw use in the first months of the war in a reconnaissance role. I've seen some references saying about 60 were built, though that's still unconfirmed.

I knew it would be easy to find, Dave - especially given the T-shirt you brought over for Jim...I must admit I usually go with 501 for Tigers in Tunisia as it was the markings on the Tamiya 1/16 Tiger I with interior detail that I built in the early 70s...sticks with you for some reason...

After David Manley put me onto the SW:X-W 'larger ship' the Scum C-ROC cruiser for possible use with BSG, I snagged one on E-bay. After staring at it for a week, I decided it needed a repaint job to better fit in with the colors that seem to be part of the last rag-tag fleet escorted by the Galactic.

So I masked off the peg receivers on the bottom and sprayed the entire ship GW Corax White - I like it as a base coat and plan to start detail painting the beastie before some washes and drybrushing sessions...

Started blocking in some basic colors on the C-ROC cruiser I am repainting for BSG - I figure it will be a combination passenger/cargo ship...still lots more bits and bobs to slap paint on, but the model is made for that sort of detail...

Last month I posted photos of the Ethiopian F-86's and the Somali Mig 21's. Well I add some planes to those. First up Somali Mig 17's.

They had a winged Leopard on some of their planes but I didn't have one of those so I used some Flying Tiger (MISCMINI) decals for that.

Then in the beginning the Ethiopians had some other US planes. Here are 2 F-5's. As always AIM models and MISCMINI decals.

OK so here is how strange this war became. In the middle of it the Somali's kicked the Russians out and the Ethiopians did the same to the US. So the Russians moved in to replace the US. So here are 2 Ethiopian Mig 17's. Next month I should have some more additions to both forces and again it is a bit strange.

Nice painting, actually that's great painting when I look a bit closer. Details like the helmet netting is spot on, very good.

Are you using a wash and then highlighting? Or painting the shadows? Its very effective, especially on the Japanese troops.

  39. #39

I use a rather simple method. First I block them out by hand painting the basic colors. Then I double wash. First wash is black pigment in a water/Pledge floor polish mix. After that dries I hit it with a Army painter Soft tone wash (Small bottle, not the bigger can). Then finish off with Tamiya dust compacts to give it that dusty look and bring out the details like the helmet netting. Then top it all off with a matt varnish in a spray can. I aim for the wash to give it shadows while the dust highlights the raised parts. On the vehicles I may go one step further with Mig products for dirt, rust, and mud.

Consider myself "Above Average" grade and get a chuckle out of the self proclaimed "Pro Painters" on Flea Bay who look to be lesser quality then mine.

All it takes to be a "pro-painter" is to be paid for stuff you personally have painted - quality don't come into it!

You can be a professional bricklayer, but fail to build straight walls!
I guess, though, that you wouldn't remain in the "profession" very long!

I would rate your work as well above average! Those troops and tanks are beautiful!

Thanks for the compliment. I also guess you are right on the "Pro" bit about getting paid, seen a lot of "Pro's" in US sports that are anything but.

But for me Pro is quality, not finding some sucker to give you money... Though is enough people give you money to paint sooner or later you are likely to get better at it. Or in my case have been painting plastic tanks since the early 70's and never grew up...just ask my wife.

Thanks Ken, I've been using the Army painter soft tone, small bottle but diluting that with pledge and a bit of water, I find it a bit uncontrolled, sometimes it stays in the fold and sometimes it sort of drys back leaving a scummy look around the edge of the fold and not in the depth of it. I'll see if I can post a picture to show what I mean.
I then usually dry or wet brush highlights but find with drybrushing it looks good with my normal vission but when photographed and obviously magnified it looks pretty crude. I've not come across the powders before, maybe they are a way forward because I quite like a dusty worn look to my figures.
    Thanks for the quick reply.
    Cheers

As for the drying issues with army painter, been there done that. Giving then a quick flick sometimes shakes off the excess, or there is dusting over the dark areas. Also I have found a wet brush will take off some of the over shading in the low points (Bottle only, I read somewhere the can is oil based). Of course sometimes the dark edges have a look of their own like on overcoat hems. or low points on the side of tanks.

On that note it is 4:30 A.M. here, bed time for me.

Thanks for the info Ken, I did wonder what time zone you were on.
I had a good look at the last batch of figures I did and seem to have caught most of the run back, although some of them I had to go over 2 or 3 times. You are right about the can it is oil based, I used it once, and found it worked really well, in so much as it spread smoothly, better in my opinion than the water based washes but it made all the colour very dark, I've not used it since. I used to get good results with oil paint washes, they flowed very well, but I sort off got seduced by drying times with acrylics.
I'll have a look for the Tamya and MIG powders.

    Thanks again
    Cheers

Well, I have completed Round One of painting on the C-ROC cruiser, turning it away from Scum and Villany toward the Rag-Tag Fleet of BSG fame...

After spraying it with GW Corax White (really more grey than white), I used three different greys to pick out bits and panels, along with a medium blue and off-white for detail/color, and then a couple of washes of dark grey and brown - all Vallejo colors - to frame things and dirty it up. Next comes some dry-brushing and then a couple of more washes, along with some final detail painting....
