Council of Five Nations 2019 ‘Here Come the French’
Saturday started off with a double scenario. The first half had the French sending in a flight of SPAD XIIIs to strafe the ground installations that protected the key targets the bombers would later come to bomb.
Six pilots flew with three on each side flying one plane each. The Germans had a variety of planes. When shot down they would take a different plane. When the strafing runs were done they would get a fresh plane to face the Breguets.
From left to right, German pilots were Hank Drapalski,(a picture of his arm) Allan Phillips and John Rigley.
For the French, Bob P, Bob Mulligan and myself.
Very quickly the Germans light up BobP.
I got in a couple of unanswered shots at one German causing his engine to sputter.
BobP’s SPAD did not like the fire o=r being shot at again.
Hank fired off a quick burst to save ammo and downed me on one shot.
AA MGs on the ground were taking some damage but not as much as they were dealing out!
I hope BobP likes being in the middle of the action as he spent a lot of time there the whole weekend.
Fire started by ground fire takes me out again.
John smokes BobP but jams his guns for his effort.
Clear skies for some strafing. My new plane (Blue tail flaps) gets behind the ground mgs arc of fire. The target is destroyed.
When the bombers appear one of the Fokkers ends up parallel to my Breguet. My rear gunner wastes no time and plugs the pilot twice.
Bob M’s first bomb falls long off target. Must have been distracted by the fire. Before the smoke clears on the ground the fire reduces his Breguet to cinders.
John does his best to distract me from my target but the bombs fall true, but not enough to destroy it.
Another target hit but this time the bombs fail to detonate. And so goes the next target hit with dud bombs. A tailing DVII was lit up the card before by the tail gunner.
With a relatively healthy plane John delivers the coup d’gras with both of my crewmen killed.
With all the attention elsewhere BobP gets a few free turns set up some bomb runs.
John would have none of that and attacked asap. Both planes went spiraling into the ground.
With my Breguet downed I returned to escort the Bobs. Bob Mulligan made his way to back safety as the AA guns had badly shredded his bomber.
BobP’s new Breguet was once again attacked by John.
With Bob M off the German scouts turn on my SPAD. Luckily my SPAD is the faster scout as I had to flee until I could unjam, my guns.
BobP’s last bomb hit the target but did little actual damage.
Even though we put in a gallant effort our bombing mission sadly inflicted little damage overall.
