Thread: Enter the Scarab.

    Default Enter the Scarab.

This game took place at the Cowards wargames club Hoveton, Norfolk on 13th September 2019.

One Scarab had to destroy four objectives and exit from the opposite end of the mat. Having found that two aircraft were not enough to stop a Locust, for the more powerful Scarab I was going to use three aircraft but four other members wanted to play so the Scarab had to face a Fokker DR.1, an A gun Sopwith Triplane, the AB/B gun D.H.4 and a B/A gun Bristol Fighter. There were two mats (No-Mans Land & Countryside) touching along the longer edge.

After the first three moves the planes had moved forward and the Scarab had rotated and moved to the left.

The planes came on while the Scarab turned right to face the single aircraft.

The Scarab moved to the right whilst the planes came on except for the D.H.4, which turned away for some reason.

The Sopwith Triplane flew on whilst the Fokker Triplane turned to port to fly over towards the Scarab. The Scarab headed towards the far right objective whilst the D.H.4 guarded the second objective from the right. The Bristol Fighter flew on to outflank the Scarab.

The red Fokker closed in on the Scarab, whilst the Sopwith turned to port to come over in support. The Bristol Fighter continued its outflanking run while the D.H.4 contiued its guarding role.

As the Scarab marched on the red Fokker daringly flew in to close range and fired at its unshielded side wounding the Scarab's pilot. The Sopwith moved forward to try to get behind the Scarab on the left whilst the Bristol turned to do the same on the right. The D.H.4 continued its defensive circling.

The red Fokker stalled to remain in close firing range to do more damage on the Scarab's unshielded flank by causing an explosion. However, in return the Scarab used its black smoke launcher to attack and damage the Fokker. (Sorry, no photograph)

The Scarab moved off to the left but the Fokker also turned left and delivered more shots at close range on the Scarab's unshielded flank. These proved enough to finish off the Scarab (when the +1 damage rule was applied). The Fokker had been slightly damaged by the smoke. The other planes were positioning themselves for attack runs but were not needed.

The victorious human pilots flew off for coffee and cake in the mess whilst Martian High Command issued a reminder to Scarab pilots to guard their unshielded flanks. The Martians were determined to destroy those objectives and you will see in the sequel. Do not miss the next episode.

Thanks go to Olly (Fokker Dr.1), Percy (Sopwith Triplane), Richard (D.H.4) and Richard (Bristol Fighter) for taking part.

Who said you need two seaters to bring down Martians? Just three wings will do!

Great stuff, lads! Hitting the unshielded sides of a tripod is definitely the way to go if you can manage.

    All the best,
    Matt

The Fokker Dr.1's manoeuvrability was a definite advantage.
