Default Amazing what you find in a country town

Yesterday it was such a great day (sunny and 23 degrees) after the string of dreary winter days that my wife and I decided to take a drive into the country. We had lunch in Mannum (a town on the River Murray in South Australia) and after lunch we went for a stroll down the main street.

In from of the local RSL building I spotted these:

I'm pretty sure they weren't recovered from the river!!

I quite like the patina developing on the second one! They are rather eye-catching - it would be interesting to know the connection between naval mines and the spot they're on display...

    All the best,

I've got it! The exposed rocks in that area go back to the Neo-proterozoic: obviously, these are colonial ediacaran life-forms, grouped together for mutual defense.

We used to have sea mines on most of our seafronts for charity collections when I was younger.
Most have gone now I think, certainly don't see them as much - probably too warry for our local government administrations.

Looks like some research into this. Somewhere in the back o my mind I remember seeing something about sea mines but that was some time ago.

I remember seeing a couple on the seafront at Poole when I was a child - no idea whether they are still there now.
