Thread: Black Cloud Launcher Stands

  1. #1

    Default Black Cloud Launcher Stands

I have bought some rectangular card stands to fit on one end of the Black Cloud Launcher arcs because I thought it would look better with a 3D effect and it might reduce some arguments as to whether the launching arc was actually at 90 degrees to the edge of the Tripod's base. I was careful to push the arc up to the end of the stand so that there is no increase in range.

He are a couple of photographs:

What a good idea. Where did you get them from?

I bought the stands from a company called Board Game Extras here in the U.K. but similar stands are readily available from other game sellers. They are usually listed under something like Accessories. They come in eight different colours.

The Board Game Extras store is at https://www.bgextras.co.uk/ but that is probably not much use to you since you live in Australia.

What a nifty idea. I was toying with the idea of designing and 3D printing something like this when I was designing my black smoke clouds.

I, too, love this idea, David - well done, indeed! I will be looking for these from a local supplier myself. Thanks for discovering these for us.

If you look on the SpielPro site, they have rectangular stands like the ones I bought. I chose rectangular ones to ensure that the launcher arc was perpendicular to the edge of the Tripod's base. They also have more colours to choose from. http://spielpro.com/card-stands/

I went down to my basement, found an old Warhamster troop base, added felt and flocking, and ... voila! A thing!

And doesn't the thing look keen next to this adorable tripod?

And best of all, the thing didn't cost me a thing (well, except for about a quarter hour of my time).

And you can do the same! I "thing" that's awesome!

(Seriously, thanks for the fantastic idea! It's going to be a permanent part of our games from now on! )

    Well done, Eric!

It does increase the range slightly, however.

I think I need to order some. On this site, http://spielpro.com/card-stands/, which one do you think is the best. I probably only need a few.

I ordered the 19mm by 17mm ones in black, Ken. I like the idea of putting the edge of the marker at the edge of the stand so it abutts against the tripod base, just like in David's original posting above. I ordered 40 of them and plan to share them out with my gaming group (and Karl/Jager). I may decide to trim them down/cut them in half to make them fit the size of the arc - I will have to experiment and see if that works...

    All the best,
    Matt

I couldn't find anything like this locally, so I designed and 3D printed my own:

9 minutes to print 1, 1 hour to print 5.

You and that printer of yours, Wayne! It looks great, too Is that a pretty normal print time? How long did it take you to print your Thunder Child?

    All the best,
    Matt

Hi Matt. They are very short times as the prints are very small. The bases are 17mm square and 3mm thick.

Thunderchild was much bigger and so the print time was much longer, I can’t actually remember the exact time for but it was hours rather than minutes!

Here is a picture from our gaming today that shows the Black Smoke range arc stands being used to good effect. Everbody thought they added tremendously to the look of the game (as well as the 'accuracy' of placing the cloud). I had purchased 40 of the little devils, so everyone in the group with Martians received a personal four-pack of stands.

Not being able to copy Matt's printed smoke launcher stands because I can't print, I looked for an alternative and found these.

Cut into three they work for my smoke projectors adequately, if not quite as elegantly as Matt's originals.

I am so glad we were put onto these little beasties - they really do make using the Black Smoke so much easier...

Got the one I cut up into three from Amazon.
On reflection I could have got four out of it.

    Just caught this post chief.
I had a mind to cut some of those on the band saw, out of the black acrylic left over from when I did the smoke and flames for the balloon. Thanks to you I now will not need to bother.
My order will be with you shortly.
