Voilą le soleil d'Austerlitz!
. . . we will be watching for cylinders in the background . . .
Looks like they didn't make it . . . .
So how many books are in your personal library?
They do not know what happened to the lander. Contact was lost when it was 2.1 km above the surface of the Moon. The Lunar Orbiter part of the mission is still functioning.

Crashing down on the Moon surface should reflect with a bell-like sound (like NASA recorded it in sixties). The Moon is a hollow metal structure brought in our orbit eons of time ago.

Turns out, making a landing on the moon is hard. I was on my way to a s/f group meeting , so I didn't find out until much later: but David's report was accurate as of then. Going to poke around, see if there's any mroe information this morning.
OK, still no word on why the lander crashed, but the Chandrayaan orbiter is still functioning at 100%, and the overall mission is still ongoing:

The orbiter should be able to see the black smoke cloud from that distance . . .
As I found out with many hours and quarters in college

The Israelis had something similar happen in April: they got their Beresheet lander to within just a few KM of the surface, and then lost control and crashed.

The latest update:

or, the TL;DR version:
Chandrayaan-2 orbiter has spotted Vikram lander on the moon;
communications not yet established
efforts to do so will continue for another 14 days.
Indeed: yeah, it's not necessarily the flight, it's the landing.
