Thread: 1919 Scenarios

    Default 1919 Scenarios

I know there has been past interest in "what if" scenarios where WWI extended into 1919 and maybe 1920. You can imagine the Germans flying Junkers D.Is, AEG G.Vs, and Zeppelin-Staaken R.XVs; the French in Hanroit HD.3s and Salmson 7s; the Austrians in Phönix D.III and Fokker D.VII; etc. A lot of the planes that were just trickling into squadrons in autumn 1918 would become prevalent in 1919. (And of course, we have to make the wild assumption that the Central Powers could summon the willpower and resources to keep fighting.)

Are there any tables of aircraft or scenario-sets or other materials available for the "extended war campaign"?

That was on my to-do list way back when.
I have a folder with research somewhere in the box
Scenarios really wouldn't change from 1918 except the planes. One issue I remember is that the Entente would have a full generation plus of engine development
since nothing was done in Germany for many years after the end of the war. The planes they could field had major speed advantages over the "projected" CP planes.

That is a good point. It seems like the remaining Entente powers were trending toward 250-400hp engines near the end of the war, while the German engines were mostly small improvements to the same ones they were using in 1917, in the 100-200hp range. Of course the Central Powers might have other good attributes like metal skins on the Junkers planes and the use of parachutes.

I'm sure the lack of engine development was at least partially due to the lack of resources from the blockade.
Look how their WW2 jet was retarded by the lack of nickel, cobalt, and molybdenum for the high-temperature metals needed for the engines.
Certainly, their rotary engines would have been more efficient with enough castor oil.

Perhaps you could find some ideas from the Russian Revolution or the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1920.

Absolutely. You can find many photos of my WoG minis repainted into 1920 Polish-Soviet colours and markings along with some shots of the games my group played.

Indeed, those are fun, but they mostly use the same planes as 1918 since plane research and production pretty much disappeared with the armistice.

But I was thinking a little differently -- had the war continued, there would have been many new plane-types coming into play. I'll give an example: The Salmson 7 was a replacement from the very-common and well-liked Salmson 2, but they corrected the problem that the pilot and observer were too far apart to effectively cooperate. Had the war continued, thousands of Salmson 7's would have been built and the type would have been seen everywhere. (Now, in WoG terms those two planes are probably equivalent, but there are other types like the Junkers D.I, Martinsyde Buzzard, and Hanroit HD.3 that were new or just starting to trickle into use, and they would have been more common in 1919.)

One thing that would have occurred would be a mass carrier raid on the German High Seas Fleet at anchor in harbor. No, really. The Brits had pioneered aircraft carriers, had gotten the design down, and had the Sopwith Cuckoo entering production, a carrier based torpedo bomber. (No guns though.) The plans called for a full 100 aircraft, including some taking off from lighters towed by destroyers. This would have been history's first use of massed carrier airpower, the use of which gave the IJN carriers free reign of the Pacific in early 1942. The war ended a few months before the beta version of Pearl Harbor went off.

The Brits would have to wait until 1940 to do it, but this time against the Italians and with only two dozen biplanes, and at night. (Pearl Harbor was not exactly a new idea.) Considering how impressive the results were for so few aircraft, and that WWI warships had practically no protection from torpedoes, it leaves one wondering what would have happened in 1919...

I did run a Cuckoo attack a couple of times; i need to work on some house rules and play balance. (it didn't help that the time I ran it at Origins, my 12 person game had 4 people )

Just do Iron Division Freikorps airforce versus Latvian and Estonian 1919.
