Lot's of planes were worst than the Defiant, but the assumptions the designers made were just bad.

Both aircraft were actually quite good from their original design requirements, at the time the requirements were stated. Interference from ministry muppets and timescales of production in a prewar/ emerging wartime economy led to their downfall.

Maybe the Defiant was ahead of its time. Remember there was a US Navy plane (AVENGER) that looked like that. Although the Avenger was a torpedo bomber and not a fighter.

I think the design requirements showed a lot of lack of thinking. Sure, broadside and underneath firing on level bombers sounds like a good idea,
But when you're fitting the weight and drag of a turret and gunner in essentially a fighter sized plane, you have performance loss with no real gains in attack.
It also ignores what the enemy is doing while your sidling up to his formation.
