Thread: Trumpeter B-25 Mitchell

    Default Trumpeter B-25 Mitchell

I recently got my hands on a pack of the Trumpeter 1:200 scale B-25s, which are aimed at ship modellers wanting in scale Doolittle raid aircraft.

The pack contains 10 sprues (for a total of 5 aircraft) in a transparent polystyrene plastic:

The scale is virtually identical to the WGS aircraft as can be seen in the following comparison shots.

The wings are a single piece to which the engines (made up of 2 parts: nacelle and cowl) are later attached. The wingspan matches the Ares model perfectly.

The fuselage is 2 parts (upper and lower half) which include moulded dorsal turret and tailcone transparency. There is no lower turret as these were removed to save weight on the Doolittle aircraft. Panel lines for the side windows in the waist are also notably absent. The two halves are glued around the wing centre section. Cockpit and nose transparencies are separate parts. The Turret is sligtly smaller than the Ares model and the guns are more in scale (thinner) though are moulded as part of the fuselage spine. The sighting dome aft of the cockpit is also notably absent.

The tail consists of a single piece horizontal stabiliser and two vertical fins these are affixed to the top of the fuselage. The tail parts are virtually identical in overall dimensions to the Ares model but are noticably thinner.

The completed model (minus nose and cockpit transparencies for priming) looks well matched to the Ares model and certainly at tabletop viewing distances should look sufficiently similar.

As I have 5 Mitchells plus the Ares one I will be looking to add some variety. As such I have begun an early strafer nose conversion:

I have plans for 3 of the Mitchells so far:
Mitchell MkI or II in RAF colours (Day bomber command colours, though these were rare; most RAF aircraft retained the US Olive Drab).
PBJ-1D USMC (Including Radome replacing ventral turret).
B-25C 345th Bomb Group with strafer modifications.

For the others, I'm currently considering:
    Russian winter overpainted camo
Standard USAAC Olive Drab (e.g. Doolittle)
US North Africa desert colours (sand over grey)
    Netherlands East Indies (Black)

Cheers! Do you have a copy of the files you used to generate the B-25 aircraft cards you did. If I could tweak those rather than generate my own that would be great.

Do you have Photoshop? That is what I use to do my graphics.

Otherwise, I can do something for you?

I use Paint Shop Pro for most image work; depending on the version of photoshop I should be able to import and use a photoshop file.

Some further work in progress, 1st coat of paint on the RAF, USAAF and PBY Mitchells, you can also see the waist guns on the strafer nose variant and the radome on the PBY belly. A Trumpeter SBD snuck in to the photo too.

Looking good Mark. I also like the clear plastic so the glass looks like glass.
