Dave had Thursday off from work and came over for some more flying. Today we flew Wildcats trying to stop a pair of Vals that were intent on bombing the landing ships off Guadalcanal. A pair of Zeros escorted the Vals.
Dave flew 3 Wildcats while I piloted the Japanese.
Three landing ships were also protected by a destroyer. It had one 360* gun firing C damage and two A firing mgs, one fore 180* and one aft 180*.
The Wildcats look down at the Vals after the Zeros flash by in the first pass.
A Val’s rear gunner gets a shot up at a Wildcat whole another Cat flies directly overhead.
(Wildcats at level 5, Vals at 4.)
The Zeros have Spilt-S’d to drop to the Val’s level with the Wildcats still above.
As the Vals get closer to the ships the destroyer opens up but misses with it’s 5” guns.
The Zeros trying to get at the Wildcats from behind.
The Vals in the danger zone, getting shot from behind by the Wildcats diving in on them while they are lining up their drop.
One Wildcat is set on fire by the Val’s gunner.
Another Wildcat is downed by a Zaro.
One Val noses down to drop it’s bomb with the other about to. ( here I was laughing and frustrated as a few plots earlier I had plotted my Vals reversed! I had wanted to sent the white Val after the upper transport but plotted it thinking it was the green Val. Oh well….)
The green Val’s bomb got a partial hit on a transport but the white missed and was shot down for it’s reward. Good shooting Dave!
The Wildcats were now in the Zero’s sights.
Down goes the 2nd Wildcat as the Val skips away at tree top level.
We called it here. It was Dave’s first game with altitude. More practice with altitude is in the winds
and more bombing practice needed for me!
