Default A Thursday afternoon in Ellsworth

Dave had Thursday off from work and came over for some more flying. Today we flew Wildcats trying to stop a pair of Vals that were intent on bombing the landing ships off Guadalcanal. A pair of Zeros escorted the Vals.
Dave flew 3 Wildcats while I piloted the Japanese.

One Val noses down to drop it’s bomb with the other about to. ( here I was laughing and frustrated as a few plots earlier I had plotted my Vals reversed! I had wanted to sent the white Val after the upper transport but plotted it thinking it was the green Val. Oh well….)

The green Val’s bomb got a partial hit on a transport but the white missed and was shot down for it’s reward. Good shooting Dave!

We called it here. It was Dave’s first game with altitude. More practice with altitude is in the winds
and more bombing practice needed for me!

    Nice looking action.
I like your green Val - might have to change some of mine.

Thanks Pete. When Vals were unwanted and you could get them for $4 I got a bunch to repaint. I think having planes with more than just the original color schemes adds a lot to theh look on the table.

I added 4 or 5 back when Miniature Market was selling them cheap as well.
I just checked my spreadsheet and I have 10, so I think 3 or 4 will become green.

    Thumbs up

Very nice collection of Pacific area Aircraft Peter. The Vals & Zero repaints look great.

Me thinks you should have posted this down in the WW2 section.

Darn, I thought I did! I'm so used to hanging out in the WWI it must have been by habit. I'll have to see if this can be moved.

FYI Vals are repaints, Zeros are AIM.

I think an Email to Rob, Eric or Keith can get it done.

Earlier today, inland observers reported a flight of enemy aircraft heading for the cargo unloading zone. All combat aircraft were currently allocated to other critical missions. The only available responders were from a training flight of three newly arrived replacement pilots practicing takeoff and landing from a local escort carrier. Based on eye witness reports and fragments of radio traffic between the pilots, the following sequence of events was developed.

The F4Fs attacked the Japanese formation head on. After turning, they broke formation and focused entirely on the Vals. This allowed the zeroes to get into tailing positions. The inexperienced pilots failed to properly adjust altitude, and although in position to shoot, were unable to score decisive damage. In addition, Antiaircraft gunners on the destroyer had to hold their fire on several occasions to avoid hitting the F4Fs.

Two parachutes were observed from the American planes and the third went down into the ocean in flames. Search and rescue efforts are in progress, but no reports have come back yet. The area commander has requested an investigation into why these pilots were flying in a combat area without an experienced pilot monitoring the training mission.
