    Default OTT DYM Mission 6 - Where's my Gunner? - 12th February 1916. Kyte.

It all seemed like a fairly straightforward mission to the Bulldogs as they flew over the lines, get in, get to the sights on the photos that the photo recon boys took, and bomb the living daylights out of the Huns on the ground with only the Archie to worry about. No balloons this mission to worry about.

Lead by Pete van der Maren in the DH2 nominally flown by the Major, and accompanying Oliver Tyne and air gunner Ben Nevis in their Gunbus, the other Gunbus flown by Burrington Combe had Ian Solent as bombardier, and top cover in there case was flown by Jim Wellard, just returned from a spell in hospital, but now fully recovered according to himself.
The boys eventually identified the first of their targets whilst still out of range of the Archie defending the area.

Bombs away chief shouted Nevis over the roar of their Monosoupape engine.
To their left Ian Solent had also just delivered his little bundle of love.

However the green Eindecker was not out of range and opened up with a burst from his Parabellum.

The line of holes appearing in his right wing woke up Oliver to the fact that he was under fire,
And ground fire did the same for Burrington as Archie burst just in front of his nose.

By the time that the Gunbusses had turned and were on the way to the next targets, both Pete and James had been drawn well away from their charges in pursuit of the green machine.

After swanning off around the countryside James who was obviously still suffering from the effects of his earlier wound, at last got a shot in on the Green machine which with its wounded pilot was still attempting to get home despite the air being full of British machines.
Oliver missed by a country mile, still suffering from double vision due to his earlier concussion.

James's double vision had cleared and he now got in some serious target practice on the Green machine which was miraculously still in the air and making for home. He managed to set it on fire. This must surely indicate it's imminent demise! He was running out of time and petrol to dish the Hun.

Well played Rob, lovely visuals, like being there !

    Uncle says:

Well done chaps, got it, did the job and got out. Gave a Fritz a bloody nose too. Can't ask for more than that.
We'll skip over the bit where you didn't have observers for this mission ...

    No rush Dave.
I am away from tomorrow PM until Tuesday night.
With no casualties it let me fly my mission 7 today. When I get back I should be able to get it posted, and hopefully fly mission eight on Thursday next bringing me more or less up to date.
I am afraid Pete van der Maren broke his run of scoring every mission. not often the Hun slips away but its also not often that fuel runs low.
    Have a good break.
    Rob.

    Thumbs up

Well flown Rob! That showed the old Hun that even obsolete Gun Bus's can deal out some damage.
Nice brace of Aircraft in that game.
    Rep on its way mate.

Does the Fokker pilot not get a C & W roll for his wound card?

Whatever the case, you have captured the essence of the mission perfectly: get in, do what damage you can, get out. Rep for the well-done action!

He will when Uncle gets to it. Rob doesn't maintain a nest of Eagles.

Lovely looking game Rob, I do like the plastic flames from the bomb explosions.

It looks like you were not dropping the bombs from alt 7 so that they are in the air for 3 or 4 moves, I can't remember which now, but no matter, the scenario is there for you to interpret as you wish.

    Cheers

You seem to have missed the long drawn out argument regarding bombing from high altitude as well.
You played it more like I thought it should be done.
Great looking action - really like your new table.

    Thanks chaps.
I bombed as the official rules allow. practiced the other way and could not manage all th cards on the table overlapping and getting crossed over with aircraft and other bomb drops for the next target on top of those on the way down. To much like hard work and not enough fun.

Back home again and enjoyed this very much indeed. Really loved seeing the Gunbuses, to the point where they actually survived as well - excellent stuff!!!! REP inbound

Have to ask you Rob, how do you support the backdrop? I have the same ones, but no wall to fix them to. Are yours fixed to the wall or do you use something else? At present I am relying on a rather clumsy combination of odd bits of MDF and bulldog clips - not good at all.

The wall is painted blue with the clouds on it Mike. The railway scene is cut to the hills line and glued to foamboard scroll sawn to the same contour. The back of the playing surface has a slot cut in it to allow the scenic to be slipped in or out. Thus I can use the cloud back ground for either land or sea scenarios or even change the hills for sand dunes or jungle depending on the game.

More than welcome Mike. I even found a place that would cut the foamboard to length so no need for joints.

Hi Rob - I've been working on a free standing version its 1.5m long and the side pieces are 1m, longer than the foamboard Ive been able to buy. Do you mind me asking where you got yours cut and do you think 1.5m a viable length.
