Thread: Martians captured by Fedex

    Default Martians captured by Fedex

Was out for just 1.5 hours yesterday when Fedex came by and left a note to pick up at their office. Went to the office today - as per the instructions on the note - and found that it was out for delivery. Back home and not delivered yet. Who knew Fedex was so powerful?

I wonder about FEDEX at times. I see their truck at my neighbors house but get email that they can't find my house. One time I had 2 orders from different people and did the tracking. UPS delivered but FEDEX can't find my address. Funny when I go to GOOGLE MAP on my phone it shows exactly where my house is but the driver can't find it.

It was worse than I imagined. The package wasn't Martians but a case of white Cote du Rhone wine (in two boxes of 6 bottles). The driver showed up and said when he picked up the two packages one was 'in a bag'. He showed me the back and sure enough one of the bottles had been broken making the box more mush than a box. I took out the 5 undamaged bottles (some with bits of glass shards stuck to them) and tried to figure out how should I make note of the damage. The driver was about as clued in as me as to how to do it (he was in a regular white van and not a Fedex truck so probably a subcontractor). Anyway he put a note in the area where he's supposed to put down where the package was received (e.g., front door) and gave me a paper with a number to call to make a claim. Ok...little did I know I was supposed to keep the bag with the mush and shards of glass or at the very least to take a picture.

Silly me. I called the number. The person couldn't locate the file from the number I gave (door tag number), although I was able to retrieve the tracking number on the Fedex site using the DT# (door tag number). All good except when I when through the spiel. Did you keep the box. It was no longer a box but mush and glass shards in a bag. Did you keep the bag. No, it was a mess that I didn't want. Did you take a picture. No, but the driver noted that one bottle was damaged. Do you want to make a claim or have the shipper do it? What's the difference? None, it's the same paper work.....[pause]….then the shipper gets the money for the claim and then sends it to you. Oh, so it does make a difference. Since I have to contact the shipper I will have them make a claim.

Sounds like the SHAPEWAYS problem I had a few months back. I ordered 2 items and only one was in the package. I contacted SHAPEWAYS about this. Pretty much the same thing about the picture. What does a picture have to do with a missing item I asked. We need it for quality assurance. OK if the item was damaged I can see that but again what does that have to do with a missing item? Went back and forth for 3 days. Then I was told well we need the picture but we will send the missing item. So I guess I can order something from SHAPEWAYS, 4 items, take a picture of 2 of them and say I was missing 2 of them.

None of you must have worked for the gov’ment in the past. It’s procedure and policy. Remember, they don’t have logic, just policy.

Either that or you guys really ticked off your carriers!

Haha! 33 years my friend and, yes, it's all process and no outcome. I had hoped that a commercial enterprise would be a little more outcome oriented. A complete lack on the part of the Fedex employees on how to handle the situation:

    1) The guys who broke the bottle - the case was well packed so it took a rather hard hit. Obviously, they knew it because they put the box in a bag and then quietly put the bag with the other box. They should have noted this immediately - and, yes, I'm sure they have a policy for that.

    2) The delivery guy - I don't fault him as he was given one box and a bag with what used to be a box, 5 good bottle of wine (covered in glass shards) and what used to be a bottle. He clearly didn't know what to do and ended up noting the damage in the only place he had on the e-form which was the drop off location.

    3) The customer representative on the phone - who couldn't find the tracking number from the door tag number although I gave it to her because I had found it on their web site using the door tag number. And then leaving it up to me to contact the shipper.

From this it would seem that if they have procedures and policies their staff don't know them....unless the policy is to leave the customer, literally, holding the bag.

FYI - when contacted the shipper immediately reimbursed me the value of one bottle.

    “Holding the bag”! LOL. Nice.

The policy is, of course, to be dumb enough to make you want to just throw your hands up and quit!

IT'S A TRAP! DO NOT DRINK IT. The Martians are trying to poison potential Earth's defenders!
Send the package to my place I will thouroughly inspect the liquids by myself!

That logic vs policy statement came from a buddy of mine stuck in the sandbox at the time. It was from an Army PFC to an AF Major. Over a eating a chow hall bagel at a table before the mess hall opened of all things... Blew the Major’s mind; he walked away dumbfounded. “Sir, this is the Army. We have policy not logic.”
