Thread: The Young Persons Game

    Default The Young Persons Game

I was wondering now that there are four (five if you count sails) Ares miniature games, which game would you buy now if you were starting out?

I am thinking BSG myself. Less models (therefore expense) but more complexity in gameplay.

BSG is definitely much more available then the others and the least expensive, however when you take simplicity/complexity + fun factors WGF is the best choice.

Young is that small period before you get bills and a slog of a 9 to 5 that steals you life away.

I'd still buy into WGF again without a doubt but at the prices here now I'd buy fewer !

    I'd buy WGS.

Same as I have now, but maybe a bit less as Dave commented above.
    WGF, WGS and T&T.

”No Sails” and No BSG for me.

WGF. Cooler looking models, the beginning of military aviation and rules that can be simple or marginally complex.

Still the same combo of WGF, WW2, Sails, and T&T with lashings of G&t.

I guess for me WGF/WGS and see how I like T&T. Might get to try BSG next month but stay with the planes.

WGF for fun and ease of play. You can keep it simple or add in quite a bit of complexity. (as with all ARES Wings/Sails/BSG games) The planes are fantastic and just about every plane from the war is available if you like to paint.(Shapeways) The history has more than enough wow factor in all the aviation advances through the war.

If you want a more complex game with unlimited tactical decisions each turn, BSG is the game for you. Not many ships...yet. I can see this growing faster than WGF and WGS releases put together. BSG came out, what, late winter? A new release due in August/September and another release in November. I'm sure there will be lots more to come.

I still very much like and will collect WGS but it is like fruit on a rarely watered tree.

Sails, I've played the simplest version twice and really like it. I'd love to get into it full broadside. In time I will I'm sure.

T&T is fun but it does not really grab me. I think if I knew about BSG when the T&T kickstarter was on I would have ignored it. I'd rather be playing the four above than invest more time into T&T. Maybe more games of it will change my mind.

This was an interesting question for me personally since I only discovered the WoW gaming system a little over 1 year ago. I'd been board gaming since I was a young pup. WGF and WGS were my first miniatures based games. I love the game for all the reasons already mentioned by others. Plus my grandkids absolutely love it too. Who knew shooting down your siblings would be so much fun? Since I have recently retired, my available gaming money is dedicated to acquiring the current WoW models, as well as, hunting down the out-of-print models(at affordable prices). And now thanks to Dave(clipper1801), I am adding some beautifully painted third party planes to my collection. But if I was young and working, I have no doubt that I would have been delving into every single one of these interesting and entertaining games. They all appeal to my imagination and, or, my interest in military history. The variable complexity of the rules makes for a great gaming experience no matter whom your opponent may be.

    Thumbs up

WoG WW1 would be & is still my favourite game with WW2 & BoB a follow on.
Do not want to dilute my spending on Sails, T & T or BFG although I will probably play some BFG at our games club.

Thanks for the answers! Just do not consider T&T as an alternative. A starter set and maybe a second tripod are more than enough for a WGF player to variate somehow his game sessions. But your focus can still stay on WGF.
WGS compatible too, by the way.

For me Sails first, followed by WGF.
Got WGS and BSG and T&T coming, one day over the rainbow.
Enjoyed BSG but tbh, after the two large ships due later this year, what else is there except more of the same ? I dont recall many more different ships. WGS I think will get a boost once the new medium bombers are released
