Thread: The first Tripod encounters

    Default The first Tripod encounters

My youngest son and I finally got to go head to head with the starter set in two back to back battles.

    1) I piloted the Martian pod and he the N16. He came straight in and quickly got a photograph. A quick burst of the heat ray and I singed his tail feathers as he did quick turn over the top of my craft. A quick chase ensued and I burned him out of the sky (literally, he caught fire) fractions of an inch before he got off the board.

    2) We switched sides and we tried another round. I tried to be cagey by doing an end run around him to get a photo from behind. After flying circles around the pod (and getting in one gun shot that scored 0 points and jammed my guns) I managed to take a quick photo. As I ran around the edge of the board he kept cutting me off pouring heat ray after heat ray into me. Finally he downed my craft. The photo below shows my damage from end to beginning:

Yes, the deck was shuffled; four times!

Fun game and looking forward to the next one.

Man, we were wondering how the heck the planes can win against the pods. It seemed really tough to get in on them and get a shot off. Then I read the rules again and realized we had been playing wrong the whole time! The Martian player was not declaring his action intent BEFORE the vehicles moved. Oops. That may have made a big difference.

Yeah, the Martians are powerful but have to commit which Ray gun or smoke ejector fires before movement. A nice balancing of power.

Sounds like you had a couple of great battles.

I made a list of the various decks' cards yesterday, Joe, and half of the X and Y decks are goose eggs, so it's not terribly surprising that you had that many...

Glad you have 'broken the seal' on the game and enjoyed it!

    All the best,
    Matt
