Uncle called the members of the Bulldogs C flight to a briefing in the Squadron room.
"Right chaps! Listen up! Seems the Intelligence chappies have got wind of a Hun plan to attack Fort Douaumont & plan to send a flight of Recon Aircraft to photograph the Fort & surrounding areas prior to laying down an artillery barrage. The French flyers are stretched thin will all the activity around Verdun & have asked for assistance."
"A temporary airfield has been prepared about 6 miles from the Fort so you will leave Bentangles & be prepared to scramble when the French lookouts have sighted the German Aircraft. They will fire off a Red Flare to signal the enemy approach. You must stop the Huns from getting those photos. Watch out as they are sure to have some fighter escorts."
"Lt. Fife-Brand will lead the attack accompanied by 2nd. Lt. Rhodes & Flt Sgt. Stark in the 3 DH-2's & Lt. Hill with AM3 Quartermain will bolster their force in the FE 2b."
"Ground crews are already on their way in trucks with ammunition & fuel & the French will provide food etc." "Good Luck & remember the importance of this special mission!"

The next day found the crews at full readiness with their aircraft being warmed up for a quick reaction.

Over at the Eagles Nest The Germans who had been selected for the mission listened to the Staffel Fuhrer who numbered off the crews. Obltn Helmet Dahlmann with Ltn Hans Schobinger as his Observer would fly the Albatross C.III while Ltn Julius Gilly with Ltn Hans Groos would fly the Aviatik. Fighter escort would be provided by Ltn Caul-August Schwartz & Ltn Richard Arntzen flying Fokker E.III's..

The German crews took off & flew over the Trenches looking for the Fort as they studied their map references.

Before too long they spotted the Fort & proceeded to line up their approach with the two fighters keeping a lookout on the outside of the formation. There was no sign of any French Aircraft & the 2 seater pilots smiled at the thought they may have caught the French napping.

As they approached the Fort, a French listening post picked up the sounds of multiple aircraft engines coming from the lines & immediately fired off the Red Flare to alert the waiting British aircraft.

The German Aircraft now came under attack from the Anti Aircraft Machine guns mounted on the Fort but little damage was done accept for a lucky shot from some Infantry who caused minor damage to the Aviatik's rudder.

The defending British DH-2's had now closed to within range & opened fire but to little effect.
"Gott in Himmle!" exclaimed Dahlmann "Verdammit Britishers! Vot are zey doing such a long vey from home?"

The second wave of British aircraft now arrived on the scene & exchanged fire with Schwartz's Grey Fokker which was set on fire but not before it did some damage to the Fee.

Dusty Rhodes who had closed on the Albatross got a nasty shock when the German opened up with his front gun & Dusty felt a stinging pain along his left upper arm. However a quick check showed it to be only a slight flesh wound.

It was now Fife-Brand's turn to feel the wrath of the German fliers as he was bracketed by both 2 seaters & Arntzen's E.III.
Not only was he wounded but his engine was badly damaged which forced an immediate forced return to base. The Germans were certainly doing their best to complete the mission!

While Alex Quartermain was working on the jammed Lewis gun of the Fee, Dusty Rhodes attacked the Aviatik causing it to smoke & finally crash to earth in the French country side but before he could rejoice in his first victory the return fire from the German 2 seater wounded him for the second time as he felt a hammer blow to his left thigh & the shock & pain caused him to momentarily black out only regaining consciousness in time to effect a hard crash landing where he was soon taken by French troops to their field hospital.

The loss of both German 2 seaters resulted in a major British Victory to the pleasure of the French defenders of Verdun.

    Victory Points

    2 German 2 seaters shot down = 4 VP
2 German Scouts shot down = 2 VP
    TOTAL = 6 VP

    German Forces = NIL

    Comments & Observations

I flew Dusty Rhodes DH-2 & the FE 2b. All other aircraft were AI.
    All aircraft flew at Level 4 & I used Dave's D8 charts.
That was a surprising result as most games had the German recon planes completing their mission.
I was fortunate that I rolled for the Huns to be heard in Turn 2 & the second wave of my fighters rolled to come in at an advantageous position. A couple of Fire damages certainly helped my result.
Looks like Flt Sgt. Brandon Stark got 3 kills which added to his 2 previously achieved will make him my First Ace in this Campaign!
Anyway the jolly old Hun sent one Pilot home wounded with a damaged engine & Dusty was lucky to survive his second wound at his moment of Glory. LoL (I rolled a 6 for his survival roll & he will be out of Action for 3 scenarios).
I must say I really enjoyed that game & the action came thick & fast. I think I missed a couple of + 1's for both sides but it seemed to even out OK.

Well the German crews got off pretty lightly considering the Flamers & all went down in Enemy Territory with only one Captured.

Note the Gun Jambs 5 to 1 in favour of the Germans!

Dave would you kindly run your expert eye over my tallies but I think I might have it right for once.

Super job Baz - finally a victory for the Bulldogs to celebrate

    Uncle says:

Jolly well done chaps - gave the Hun what for and stopped them cold.
The Tally added up & improving - more the layout & presentation to concentrate on - follow the format:

Pilots name / what happened to them & where / injuries / Victories or not
eg: Lt Stan Deasey (plane) / SD ET / WIA / 0 Kills

Use this to help calculate what happens to them & write it out eg:
    Crash: Rolled 9 -1SD -1WIA = 7 Injured - Skip 1D3 Scenarios. Rolled 3 = Skip 2
    E&E: Rolled 12 -1BEL -1WIA -1WIC = 9 Didn't even see me! Total Skips 2

All info on three lines is easier to read & confirm.

F/Sgt Stark receives Military Medal & Croix de Guerre silver star. for his victories
Lt "Lofty" Hill gets a Military Cross for his service

Baz PM me a skill for Stark from post #4 of the rules sticky

    Aye, Aye Sir!

    Thank HQ for the Gongs.
Better have a "Knees Up" in the Mess tonight.
Can we send a bottle of Scotch to Dusty in the Hospital?

Certainly a bloody nose for our side this time. How are we to prepare our artillery properly without the accurate maps that photographs give?
Though it does seem that whichever side wins this one, there's a steep price to be paid; missing two aircrew for at least the next two missions isn't a walk in the park.

Congrats to F/Sgt Stark, though; is my memory correct that he's not only your first Ace of this campaign, but overall, the first?

I think Sam meant the first overall in this campaign.
I am pretty sure my Til Huebner was the first. And now
    Giesebrecht is my second.

Great job, Baz. Been waiting for your Butchers before adding my two bits.
Yours shows just how lucky my C.III was to make it back.
The points definitely favour the successful photos making it home.

Rep on the way. Like the added touch of Scotch for Dusty.

I knew there was something else I meant to bring up, but since I read your AAR in pieces I forgot.

All aircraft flew at Level 4
The German aircraft were out of range of the fort AAMG.
That's why I flew mine at 4 and not 2, forgoing the double points for the lower altitude to avoid inevitable disaster (for me anyway).

The victory points, of course, are very secondary to a good game and AAR - although the victory/defeat is something can factor into the AAR.

I've thought about how to change the victory points so that it would be more balanced. Some of the CP victories have come had a heavy cost but resulted in substantial point margins - a 12 point difference for my Italian Front AAR - while losing 1 plane, 3 driven from the sky and 3 aircrew dead. Baz here cleaned up with just a 6 point margin.

One suggestion is to increase the points for each photo recon plane shot down but allowing more photo recon planes (I had 3) means the CP player is more likely to get 1 back with a set of photos. If just 1 Eagle photo-recon plane had made it back in Baz's AAR with 1 photo for the fort and each point it would have been a Bulldog defeat (4 points - 1 less 2-seater lost - versus 6 points for photos). Perhaps the scenario should limit the number of 2-seaters to 2 machines which made my game a lot more tense.

Just thoughts as I like to replay some of these scenarios are they are producing very interesting games. I've done the Coming and Going one about 6 times - lots of fun from these. Thanks to everyone for thinking up interesting scenarios.

If I did this again I would have 2 X 2 seaters and 2 scouts for the CP and 4 scouts for the Entente with a slightly higher chance of hearing the incoming 2 seaters (1 die pip higher) - just to see how that would go.

One thing I considered was making the Eagles have a full set of the required photos to get full points (which I strived for and accomplished) and then reduce the total somewhat to give the Bulldogs a chance.

The Eagles should have to have at least one each of the required photos to get any points for them.

Great game Barry, you showed the Hun what for. Dusty Rhodes an Ace inspite of being shot down, congratulations to him as well.

Certainly seemed to make for a less crowded arena with only 8 planes in the air, I wondered if the superiority of the British planes in terms of durability made the difference here but looking at the tally it doesnt seem to be the case, the DH2's only took 6 points of damage each, the German planes took much more.

Just a small point and I only mention it to show I was paying attention but you have photo 15 appearing twice when one of them should have been the FE2b deflection shot at the Fokker.

The tally looked perfect to me, I dont know why Uncle gave you a rocket for it. mind you they all look perfect when he's finished correcting our mistakes.

Well I think I've finally caught up with the game reports in this section, just need to check out the Italian front and I'm back up to date.

Obviously I wasnt paying that much attention as it was Brandon Stark who got the Ace not Dusty Rhodes.

Thanks for the Heads up on pic No. 15. I missed that.
I was having problems with the uploads again. It kept trying to tick multiple photos when I uploaded a new one but got there in the end.
I have added the correct pic now!
No problem Barry, i usually have some issues when I'm uploading a game report, i usually do all the taxt and then fit in the pictures but i have wondered about doing all the pictures and fitting the text in but it still seems long winded.

I write the Text & insert the pics as I go.
I find looking at the photos refreshes my memory & helps do the story.
However it seems about half to 3/4's of the way through I start to have problems with the Forum's uploading system trying to add multiple images.
If you use my system the only thing you need do is remember the time limit for retaining the images but this is easy to control as I usually post every 3/4 hour & then go in & advanced edit again.

A nice Birthday treat getting a victory and an Ace

Glad you enjoyed the mission . Like Pete said you had the option of double shots and taking the lead from the fort or wisly you could go for the high altitude shots. I diced for which German planes did what . as a result 1 Roland took a hammering and the other got lucky . Nature of the game

Bloody well done Baz - a great result and three kills for Brandon Stark. A much needed victory for the Bulldogs and gongs for Stark and Hill to celebrate. Well done those men.
