Thread: How do you store your paint?

Default How do you store your paint?

Store and organize, those are the thoughts that pose me now. I inherited Hunter's paint supply and my meager collection got lost in the maelstrom. Over 120 bottles, many duplicates. I found this cool tin tray with a handy handle that all together slips into the drawer on my workbench, now to organize them, any thoughts?

Vallejo makes some nice organizers. I bought 5 that hang on a wall that hold 43 each. I mounted them on the inside of my man cave closet door. They have many other versions.

All very interesting, Thanks for sharing. I can see I need to do some sorting. Do you organize by colors, nationalities, or utility, so many combinations so little space . . . .

I organize by color 1st, then for Vallejo the number. (1-17X?) I never liked the 800-900 numbers! Why do they have two numbering sets?

I organize by axis allies and neutral colors. I paint a lot of bigger stuff though such as flames of war 1/16 scale and 1/350.

I used these rack I bought on Etsy. The guy who makes them lives here in the Dayton area. I like that you can get them for Tamiya bottles as well. As you can see I had one custom made for the few Tamiya paints I have. Here are the Etsy listings for these paint racks. You do have to put them together but it is a piece of cake.

This arrived for Clipper's birthday! Nicely holds 84 bottles of paint! 15" x 9 1/4" x 5 1/2" tall. Painted and ready to use! Now to weed out the dupes and organize by nationality etc.

Dave, I really like your paint organizer, and Jim's too. Unfortunately I don't have the surface area to place them near where I paint. Thank goodness Vallejo makes the hanging one.

Interesting DIY, but I'd rather have them stored vertically, so the label is easy to read.

I have a craft paint rack that stores the bottles in a like position. Yes, you can't see the label but I like it as you can see the color. I have taken to numbering the bottom of the bottles for easier selection.

You guys have way more paint than me.
My dozen or so bottles would certainly look lonely in those racks.

If you have access to a 3D printer, there are a myriad of options on Thingiverse. Here's just one example:

Well, after rabbiting on about 3D printed racks, I decided to try my hand at one.

I printed one big enough to hold the paints I would need for whatever the current project was. This one holds 18 (Vallejo) bottles.

Here is the link to the Thingiverse files: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2549451

I need to report that assembly was fairly easy but very time consuming. The pieces are designed with very tight tolerances and this means lots of cleaning, filing and test fitting as you go. Also, you need to label each piece so that you have the correct shelf and the correct orientation.

The only tools needed are super glue, hobby knife and a couple of different size flat files.

You can also store the bottles upright if that is your preferred option - the rack does have small holes that help hold the bottles vertically if you choose to store them inverted.
