Thread: King Kong reigns supreme

    Default King Kong reigns supreme

Last Tuesday night we ie myself, Baxter, Windy Jack & Mark, had decided we would play the King Kong scenario using Matt56's rules and my brand spanking new 3D printed roof top.

You can download Matt's rules here: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/do...o=file&id=2470

    The Back Story

WW1 had ended prematurely as both sides had combined forces to defeat the Martian invasion.

No sooner had the aircraft been wheeled into their respective hangars and pilots and groundcrew relaxed than a new threat emerged - a giant ape, possibly a mutant created by all of that weird Martian gas floating around the earth's atmosphere:

The last of the alcohol was hurriedly consumed, fuel tanks refilled and ammunition checked as the giant ape had been sighted lurking on a roof top. Brown, Sachsenberg & Schafer were the first to sight the monster ape:

Brown & Sachsenberg were the first in range and opened fire:

The ape reacted by moving around his roof top but this brought him within range of Schafer who immediately opened fire:

And so the battle continued with the, by now enraged, ape prowling the roof top and flinging any aircraft that was unfortunate to fly within range of his grasp away from the roof top and out of control. The two D.VIIs continue to snipe at Kong while Brown, who has recovered from being thrown, hurrying in to rejoin the action:

Luckily Brown's shots stun the ape and prevent him from moving, otherwise it could have been very nasty for Brown!

Unfortunately for Sachsenberg, Kong turns the right way at the wrong time and the D.VII is no match for the fury of the beast:

    Schafer valiantly fought on:

But, eventually, he too was defeated by the mighty ape:

The final 'score' and, yes, we did shuffle that damage deck!

And so ended the evening's frivolity!

Just a few thoughts and reflections:

    We had to 'house rule on the spot' a few times;

    1. It was decided that Kong's 'arc of fire' would be the projection of the segment of roof top that he was currently occupying.
    2. We decided that the range ruler should be placed at the front edge of that segment when determining whether or not an aircraft was within reach.
    3. Kong would be within range if a range ruler overlapped any part of the roof segment currently occupied by Kong.

And we didn't use Kong's ability to regain strength by chest pounding as we felt it would make for a very long game with Kong being virtually unbeatable - we needn't have bothered as it turned out, but the outcome may well be different with many more aircraft attacking Kong!

At the end of the evening we decided it had been a lot of fun and one scenario that we absolutely must try again!

Now, to get those files up on Thingiverse so that you can all print your own rooftop!

It was a good game. We used the Wright rules from the files. We thought that being grabbed only applied to the segment Kong was on and the segments either side. Any plane overlapping the other 3 segments suffered no penalty. Anyone know if that was correct?

I have just uploaded the files for the roof segment and spire to Thingiverse.

You are correct, Gary - Kong can only grab a plane that overlaps the segment he is on or the one to the immediate left or right. I didn't want to make him too much of a ninja... It looks like you all had a good time - glad things worked out well for you, even if The Eighth Wonder of the World was victorious... It is more 'even' when you have more planes bobbing and weaving around him...

    All the best,
    Matt

I sort of feel like there should have been a banana trophy for Kong for fighting so well

Thinks - maybe I could 3D print a banana trophy in yellow filament and it could be a perpetual trophy

Perhaps some sort of banana on which you could record the 'score' of each Kong scenario? You could write it in permanent ink/Sharpie with the date..."20 June 2019 Kong 3, Man 0" or something similar... Or perhaps a bunch of bananas on top of the building, upon whose base you could record the same thing...imagination is running wild at this point!

    All the best,
    Matt

Here is a quick and dirty trophy that could be make from various LEGO pieces.

Are we stereotyping gorillas? Maybe he likes berries, not bananas!
So you could make a berry good trophy instead.

A banana knight...goodness gracious! I agree on the potentially rude aspect... A cool figure, though. Perhaps a bunch of fruit, including bananas, might represent Kong's wide-ranging palate more effectively?

Perhaps if there were a trophy, we could send it around the world to folks willing to run a Kong scenario, kind of like what happened with the Penguin Caproni once upon a time...I wonder if there is a plastice Kong model out there that could be converted or adapted? Might be too big, if there were... I shall do some looking...but I still like the banaba/mixed fruit bowl idea......and that Banana Knight!

    All the best,
    Matt
