My second event of the Con (and second event overall) was "Flying Tigers Over Burma", run by Peter Landry. I always enjoy playing his battles because he always has an interesting twist in his games, has exquisite models of planes not in the official game - or both.
In this game, I'm on the Allied side. We're flying P-40's against Betty bombers and (I believe) Nates. If I recall, when a Nate got shot down, we came back flying an A6M Zero.
Setting up.
To the attack. I'm in the 2nd P-40 from the left, toward the bottom right. My plan is to try to go down the side and come around behind the bombers. I suspect the Nates will have some objections to that idea though.
Closer view. I'm on the right.
Still closing. Next card there should be some shooting.
Coming to the merge. I'm concerned about the Nate off to my right at about 1 o'clock, but not much I can do about it since my next card is a straight. If it looks like he's going to get behind me I can always plot an Immelmann.
And I end up in a perfect spot. The one I was concerned about turned back to the left, while the one we were closing with played an Immelmann. I end up right on his tail at short range.
Still on his tail. No overt evidence of my firing doing serious damage.
I end up overlapping the Nate I've been firing at as well as the bomber. I can't shoot them, but the can't get me either. I have to settle for a long range shot at the bomber behind this one.
I perform an Immelmann, and am able to come up behind the bombers.
I was fortunate here. The Nate made a turn while I had to go straight after the Immelmann. I shouldn't have to worry about him for a a card or two.
The P-40 next to me ends up in good firing position. Meanwhile, I continue on.
I missed a card play here, but I end up on the tail of one of the bomber.
The Japanese pilots across the table, plotting their next move.
I score a kill on a bomber (that I have to share with the plane to my left), but I also go down.
Coming back on the map.
I didn't plan my re-entry onto the map well. I overlap the near bomber. I have a shot at the next one, but after that I won't be able to turn quickly enough to get another shot. These two are going to make it off the map.
No choice. I turn to the left to take on the next bomber in line.
A longer view.
The next card I overlap the bomber, so no shot at him. I do have a long shot at the Nate behind him - and score the kill!
Another view.
I go past the bomber, and one of the P-40s behind me takes it down.
Longer view.
I went straight last card, so I have an Immelmann coming up...
...and that worked out well. Short range shot, with no obvious damage.
I end up nose to nose with a Nate and knock him down. Unfortunately, he also gets me with his parting shot.
I end up as the high scorer with the scoring system used by Peter. Due to previous awards from one of his earlier games, I also get a DFC. I also took the most damage, so I also win one of his infamous "Bullseye" awards.
