Default Origins 2019 - a 21-game spree at the Ares booth!

Origins this year was a busy time at the Ares booth! Between Peter(Teaticket), Jim(rhodie80), and me, we ran 20 games over the 5-day convention...a wee bit more than we are used to running! Our friend Bill(oldguy) from our local Wright Flight group ran one, too, kicking us up to a 21-game extravaganza I had hoped to take more pictures as the weekend progressed, but that simply didn't happen. Luckily, Jim and Peter were snapping cameras quite a bit, and Karl(Jager) was taking pictures and notes on the games he partipated in - no doubt they all will post the fruits of their labors in due course. Below you will find shots from several of the games I ran, along with a couple of pics of Jim's last game on Sunday...

Here is the Ares booth at a calm before the storm - after our first game...the Aerodrome banner proudly on display!

These two shots are of my first game at noon on Wednesday - a RN destroyer (modeled convincingly by our own Clipper1801) dead in the water being attacked by German naval land-based aircraft and defended by RNAS pilots. The cardboard in the second photo is the ship 'card' I made for when planes overlapped the boat...

These next pictures are from my Tripods versus Tripods game - the premise was that the humans had captured a couple of tripods and had turned them on the Martians. Four Martian tripods took on two captured tripods and six late-war fighters...

As I mentioned elsewhere, the Martians are quite tough when allowed to roam unrestrained by terrain - very pretty models that look very cool on the table. The Martians destroyed their four objectives and gave the humans rather a thumping. The two big Martians (the Cuttlefish and the Scarab) are particularly tough.

More pics in the next post - I didn't want to overload this one...

    All the best,
    Matt

Some Sails action Saturday evening - four British 74s taking on 4 French and Spanish counterparts in Line of Battle. The second pic shows some up close and personal action...lots of damage in a fairly short time...

The still sleeping Ares booth at 8:15 on Sunday morning - sleeping in on the last day of the convention...it would soon be time to stretch and rise...

These next two are of Jim's(rhodie80) 'Grinding End' battle - SE5a escorts and Handley-Page bombers taking on Jasta Berthold. Thomas(redcoon2), smiling in the face of adversity, has a gorgeous Forum background

This final shot is of my final game - two-seaters versus two-seaters (F2Bs against Hannover CLIIs) - a tidy little action that let four experienced players tangle over a HotzMats trench map...lots of smoke and fire and boom cards...a rather low-key way to end the convention

All who played in the games seemed to enjoy themselves quite a bit. Our games generated quite a bit of interest in the Ares products, and we happily helped several individuals decide just what planes to purchase... We GMs enjoyed ourselves quite a bit, too - such a great group of lads to work with and so many lovely folks to play in the games - quite a few familiar returning faces, along with plenty of fresh blood. We are already looking forward to next year!

    All the best,
    Matt

    Morning Matt.
    First what splendid photos.
Permission to reproduce the Sails ones on the Anchorage please!
Second. Any of your crew due for a Medal update?
We don't seem to have an Origins medal for the Anchorage.

Please do share the Sails pics to the Anchorage, Rob! I will look at the medals-due situation and let you know through PM in the next couple of days who needs what. I am not sure why there is no medal for Origins on the Anchorage...I am sure that can be remedied relatively easily. We shall have to put Eric and Sue onto that. I will contact them and see what can be arranged.

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks Matt, wilco that. I have only done the obvious ones for Origins that I could pick up from the Photos and remarks about who ran what.

I'm not sure if Phil bested his boom rate this year? I am ready to hand out a photo award when the double is handed out.

Dave, ever see yourself making it out to Origins? It could be dangerous. 2016 was my 1st and I haven't missed one since.

Possible next year, it's my busiest time normally, but I am training my replacement and he is great, so maybe, we will see. I have another trip to the NZ this fall or winter to survive as well, trying to work in a stop or 2 in Australia as well . . .

You sound like your schedule is extremely full of long trips. It would be great to meet you one of these years, hopefully at Origins.
