Default OTT DYM - Mission 4 - "Some Mothers do 'ave 'em" (Kyte)

    Preamble.

As he climbed away "Skimmer" Stones looked back at the devastation that he had caused to the German airfield.

Not bad work for a cluster of Cooper bombs. the real luck had been the hit on the fuel storage tanks. The blaze had involved at least two hangers, one of which must have had munitions in it.

They finished the job most satisfactorily. Now all he had to do was get the crate back in on piece and face the wrath of Major Kyte.

His mind wandered back to the previous day, when Kyte had gone ballistic over the bevy of Rookies who had been slipping off to bomb German airfields without permission. The Major had been most emphatic about what would happen to the next fool to try the stunt, and yet here he was over the lines with what amounted to a stolen aircraft under him.

If only the chaps had not taken the Crossley into Germaine St. Dennis on that evening three weeks ago, they would never have met up with the French , got drunk, and accepted the silly challenge to see who could destroy the most Germans on the ground by the end of the month. Whatever Major Kyte had said, it was now a matter of honour for the Squadron no matter the consequences.

As he muse on this and approached the lines he was totally oblivious to the fact that something far more dangerous than the wrath of his Co. was about to decend upon him from above.

AAR Mission 4 - "Some Mothers do 'ave 'em."

The first indication "Skimmer" had that all was not well occurred just as he spotted the German front lines. The chatter of Spandau's accompanied by a series of holes appearing in the cowling and the sloppiness of his Rudder control told him that all was not well in the workplace.

Ltn. Klaus O' Flaherty and his wingman Fritz Gruber had been stalking Stones ever since they spotted the smoke over the airfield they had left on patrol a few minutes before the attack. Now they had him in a crossfire and fully intended to make him pay for his insolence. this was the third such attack on their base this week.

O'Flaherty's Irish ancestry had got the better of him and throwing all caution to the winds he swooped in to make his kill.
Unfortunately, Gruber seized this moment to try some fancy flying of his own, and the two Fokkers nearly collided, totally spoiling Klaus' next shot.

As the two pilots sorted themselves out. "Skimmer* was relieved to see the Cavalry arriving in the distance in the form of Pete van der Maren and Womble Jessop.

By this point, "Skimmer" had dived over the lines, and with his Irish dander totally up O'Flaherty ignored the dictum of no flying over the enemy lines and lead the charge towards the enemy, opening fire as he went.

The whole scenario now dissolved into a series of dog fights.
O'Flaherty got on the tail of * Skimmer pumping bullets into his machine. Van der Maren was caught out by Gruber, who did some damage to the tail of Pete's Morane, whilst receiving deflection fire himself from Jessop which missed his tail by a coat of paint.

With his growing skill in the air Pete ignored the hit and pulled a perfect Immelmann bringing Gruber smack into the middle of his sights, One press of the trigger and he was flying through the remains of what had been Gruber's Eindecker.

However, O'Flaherty was steadily shooting Stones to pieces in the air.

Skimmer certainly stirred up a hornets' nest today Pete mused as he chased down O'Flaherty, and "Womble" was caught flat footed by the newcomer. Oblt. Ludwig Berr.

Pete now opened up his own gun on O'Flaherty's tail, but without any noticeable effect.

Fortunately, O'Flaherty was not doing any better with his attempt on "Skimmer" who was throwing his aircraft from side to side in a blind panic attempting to shake off the more experienced German pilot.

At last after pulling an Immelmann Womble got of a short but accurate burst into Berr's aircraft.

Unfortunately for Stones, Pete's guns took this moment to jam just as he was hosing O'Flaherty's tail.

Still above Stones, O'Flaherty rained down further destruction on his now very battered FE.

With Pete temporally out of the fight, the inevitable happened , and O'Flaherty got his kill. With his controls totally shot away, " Skimmer" failed to live up to his nickname, but emulated his surname, and fell like a stone into fields behind the British lines.

    .

Whilst this drama was being enacted out, Oblt. Ludwig Berr who was more cognisant of the dictum about not crossing the lines, had stretched it as far as he dared and was now paralleling the front and attracting the attention of the British Archie gunners who seemed to have been very complacent up to this point.

As O'Flaherty waggled his wings over his victory and banked to extracate himself from the position and head home Pete finally got his gun sorted out and turned towards the enemy once more.

Suddenly, O'Flaherty found himself the centre of attention of both Moranes as he was caught in a withering cross fire which he returned on Jessop with interest.

    .
Under pressure, O'Flaherty banked away from his primary tormentor. This was a mistake, as he did not realize that Pete's gun had just jammed for the second time. "Womble" was, however, under no such constraints, and with the first decent burst which he had managed to deliver during the whole shemozzle, neatly dispatched O'Flaherty's machine to the scrapheap.

What a ride into the valley of the shadow Rob !

    Uncle says:

Stones ! you are a weight about this squadrons neck ! Luckily for you, you annihilated the target and the lads bagged a Fokker or you'd be trudging down the road back to the trenches instead of being over them. Not only should you have not have taken a BE without permission you should still be in your bed recovering from your injuries from your last time out - I'd expect this sort of thing from the Australian but expected better from you !
As it is, due to your wound and your flagrant disregard for orders you're grounded for three weeks - dismissed !

Commercial hangers, wit some work on them to open the doors on some. (I only wanted to blow the bloody doors off.) The flat topped wooden ones in the background are only printed card ones.

    No hurry Uncle.
Kyte is out of the Office from the morrow until Sunday evening. Something about shooting some King Charles Spaniels or Cavalier dogs or what not. I think they have been overrunning the airfield.

Might have been all three Baz if "Womble" had not wombled all over the sky, and got into action sooner. Still the same goes for Ludwig Berr who just seemed to fixate on Womble and just followed him like a stray dog. Still that is the vagaries of AI with the constraint of trying to avoid crossing the lines added in I suppose.

Oh yeah, thanks Baz, I missed him in the scramble to get out the door this morning -

Started looking at this the other day before all the parts were in place.
Love your intro - the hangars and explosives really pop.
I like how you added to the basic Litko markers.
I do need to make some proper ground targets like yours.

I also really like your E.IIIs - especially Klaus O'Flaherty's (what a name, as well)

Looks like Gruber is out until we are nearly done now - bad luck that draw.

A great read - rep incoming.
