Hi, My interest in world war 1 aviation started back in the sixties with Victor comics, Airfix models, and Biggles.
During the early eighties I joined Cross and Cockade and generally kept up my interest by talking to lots of veterans of WW1 including pilots / mechanics. In the air, Chidlaw Roberts was a great influence and talked about his brush with Voss that resulted in his crash into our lines. On the ground, Tom Smalley a first class air mechanic with 23 Squadron, a greatly missed friend recalled his experiences.
Towards the end of the eighties I helped organise talks with WW2 pilots at Elvington just outside of York including Kayll, Johnson, Gunther Rall, Gabreski, and many more.
I love wargaming and WW1 aviation has been my thing for many years. I’ve written a set of rules called Always Above and illustrated it with photography from my collection. Wings of War aircraft are superb.

    Welcome, John, from Portland, Oregon.
It sounds like you have quite the background to enjoy the site and the game.
Those rules you wrote have certainly piqued my interest.
    Are they available anywhere online?
I enjoy seeing how different games handle the mechanics of air-to-air combat.

A belated welcome from the HQ. Just got back after a spot of R&R. Where are you located? Perhaps close enough for a game or two.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I’m a great enthusiast of the D10 dice and it’s roll in air combat. I’ve worked on these rules for quite a few years, after talking to pilots from WW1 and WW2 one thing came up all the time was they were shooting at the machine not the man.
Hitting the enemy aircraft with as many bullets as possible and not aimed at any specific part. Always Above will be available next week as a download from Empires at War.

Just popped in to welcome you formally to the UK Wing John.
I see you are already firmly ensconced in the Mess with the rest of the chaps. We would love to meet you at Doncaster in September for our annual weekend bash.

    Thumbs up

G'day John & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
Sound as though you were very blessed to have been able to speak with all those pilots from both WW1 & WW2. Must have given you wonderful memories.
Enjoy your visits here as there are so many great sections to explore.

Hi Barry, It was hard work in the days before the internet, hours of looking through telephone directories in libraries To find them and then asking if they wouldn’t mind me coming to talk to them . But yes it was great talking with my hero’s. I once had breakfast with Hajo Herman and Bob Doe ,Hajo asked where I lived and then said after I replied “ I bombed there “” thing is he had!. Wouldn’t have missed them for the world. JB

    Thanks, John.
I tried to order but their system seems to have issues with my US address.
As it's a download I sent them a message - hopefully they can get it sorted out.
