    Default Origins 2019 Wednesday

Greetings all, wish you were here. Day one was well attended with old and new friends in one of our Wings meccas, Columbus Ohio. Game 1 put on by the Ares Aerodrome saw Matt's destroyer survive and aggressive attack. Game 2, my Flying Tigers Over Burma saw 11 pilots. The AVG eeked a minor win downing 4 of 6 bombers. Game 3 has a combined British squadron and German Jasta 18 defending the earth from the Martian invasion!

Game 2 had lots of players taking photos. Karl took copious notes. Hopefully everyone that took photos of this game will post them here.

Here are the opening moves. I'll post more photos when I can.

Nice one Peter, good to see Karl in the thick of the fray and some familiar faces around the table enjoying the fun

A game I know. Good to see some faces I know. Good to see Karl enjoying himself and not roaming around. Is that Sue in the right side of the picture ? If so good to see her there and glad all is good with her.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks for the pic.
Will look forward to many more.

Woah! Did I miss Thursday and most of Friday? I got caught out in the heat today, too much heat, too little margarita mix . . . 42.7C - 109F . . . gotta chill down with some Origins action! Bring on the news!

    Some more teasers...

Can't do all the photos now. Just got back to hotel room after a busy FUN day.

1st off I ran a T&T game. Not having the real T&T myself I used the cards I made from the print & play download. For Martians I used 3 'All Quite on the Martian Front' models. Scenario was an attack on a martian base. 3 mobile Martians with a base. The base was basically 2 immobile Martians that could only rotate. The base had heat rays and smoke and could assist tripods in recharging. 10 pilots from both Britain and Germany fought together to defend earth from the greater threat. Sadly the ARES personnel didn't arrive until 9 am, when I was scheduled to run the game. (All my materials were locked up in the ARES secured area. ) This delayed the start until ~9:30. When we finally got going everyone seemed to have a good time. We didn't have enough time to destroy any of the Martians but one was toppled.

Later in the afternoon I ran a BSG game. 14 players all new to the game. I was a veteran GM as I had played once on Friday!

We didn't play all the rules but most. FTL I thought was pretty cool. Most of the players were very happy and thanked me for running the game. This is a definite winner. It has been very popular. Sunday afternoon I will run another BSG game.

Thursday I ran a Guadalcanal game. Wildcats fighting off Betty bombers escorted by Zeros at Henderson field. 2 Bettys got through and dropped their eggs on the airfield but paid a heavy price.

Phil, who's that standing behind you?

Saturday afternoon I will get my Zeppelin on the table. RNAS (SPAD VIIs and Triplanes) along with a French Nieuport squadron hunt down a Zep returning from Britain. It is flying low as it ran into bad weather and had to drop down below so it could make headway. Some German aircraft were sent to help it on it's way home....we'll see!

So far as of Friday night the turnout has been very very good. Matt can chime in with numbers and it is definitely way up from the last two years. BSG and T&T have played a big part in this but the WGF and WGS games have filled up as well.

If you have time, post a few pictures on BGG too with captions about your events. It is a showcase very worth the effort, to give visibility to the things you do. And a great help to the game too!

What are the dates for next years Origins ? I assume they will 10 to 14 June. I haven't been there in a few years and checked the Hilton but there are no rooms there for those dates. I checked their site and don' see anything about next years con.

2020 Origins is 17-21 June. Yeah, if you don't get a room this year it can be tough getting close to the convention center.

Origins was a great time, and yes, I have a ton of pics and notes to go through, so the good ones get posted. Probably Wednesday, as I need to get caught up for work Monday

Wednesday I ran my 1st game, Flying Tigers Over Burma. 11 pilots braves the sky over the Burmese jungles.

Aerodrome members attending this game were Phillip (milcoll73) hands bottom left corner, Bob (Bobsalt) 1st on left facing away from camera, Karl (Jager) reaching to move his plane, Dave (Caverman) 1st on right (partially in photo) and Glenn (Jago85) standing on the right.

    Great looking pics, Peter.

I sure wish Ares would give us Bettys and Sallys.
(I am not up to painting intricate camo on AIMor Shapeways like some of you guys)

    Bob's comment concerns me:
I was hoping to go next year but seems all hotels in the area are booked.
If that's the case, I guess I won't be coming next year either.

There will be hotel rooms available in the area. Getting a room at the convention center might be impossible soon but there are many hotels within a 15 minute walk. My wife and I stayed 3/4 mile away. The walk was good to do with hovering around a gaming table for 8-10 hours for 5 days!

Pete The ones right around the center seem to be full. I don't mind the walk but the wife is not a gamer that is why I like to be closer. A short walk for me is no problem.

Bob, you are sadly correct. I just did a few searches and everything in walking distance is booked! I never would have thought there are no rooms a year ahead. It's a big weekend in Columbus as it is a LGBTQ celebration weekend so it's not just gaming nerds. Hmmm...what to do next year?

This year there was an acute shortage on parking too.

I don't mind Ubering if I have to (just not too far)

I just checked also and found one that is 1.5 miles from the convention center. Not a bad drive but you said parking was bad also.

There will be a daily thread on the games I ran or was able to participate in that I have photos for. I won't be home till Wednesday night (16-17 hour drive) so I'll get to it as soon as I can.
Hopefully others that were there will add in their photos or have reports of their own.
