AAR #1: Dogfight over the Adriatic We started with a dogfight over the water with Craig flying the two-peg Austro-Hungarian Macchi M.5, BalticBob flying a four-peg Austro-Hungarian Macchi M.5 and John flying a Phonix D.1 (we need some more Austro-Hungarian flying boats). On the Italian side, Bob was flying the Green Macchi M.5, I had the white Macchi M.5 and Todd flew a silver painted Hanriot HD.1 with A guns.

Here is the initial lineup. Please ignore the wrinkles in the water; those are just waves.

Baltic Bob had been flying far from the action when he swung in to attach. Unfortunately, he was hit at close range by two different airplanes. Not only was his plane shot down from damage, but he had a dead pilot at the stick. Notice the small splash his plane made when it hit the water.

I manage to set John's airplane on fire.

Todd adds further insult to John's problems by shooting him down. Only one Austro-Hungarian airplane remains.

Finally Craig hits the drink with another splash.

Total damage to all three Italian airplanes would have been insufficient to shoot down a single airplane. A definite victory for the Allies on the southern front.

AAR #2: Defending the Otranto Barrage. In mid 1918, the United States Navy arrived at the island of Corfu, Greece in the form of 110 foot sub chasers to serve on station in groups of three boats to help keep Austro-Hungarian submarines bottled up in the Adriatic Sea. Notice the large gun on the forward deck, while a Lewis gun is mounted on the bridge wing.

Despite the antics of these sailors the 3"/23 calibre Poole anti-aircraft gun was a formidable weapon. At a 75 degree elevation, shells could reach 17,500 feet (5,334 meters) and at an angle of 45 degrees the shell could be hurled 10,000 yards (9.1 kilometers).

Unfortunately, the scenario came apart rather quickly. While I had brought the three boats I forgot to bring the custom boat cards or maneuver decks. I decided to substitute the XB maneuver deck hoping it was close in size. Craig had to leave, so we had three A-H planes for the attack, and I thought one Italian plane should help defend the boats. The three boats were set up in the middle of the playing area, one half ruler distance apart and facing the A-H edge of the board.

After a few turns, the boats have rotated 90 degrees to the east. On a prior turn, a machine gun burst from the leftmost boat set John's airplane on fire.

I finally got my anti-aircraft guns in play, and John flew right over one of the explosions. Also, the players had said on previous occasions that it was difficult to tell my custom A and B damage decks on one another, so I made some new decks. The difference should be obvious. And since the C deck is only used for anti-aircraft guns, I felt there was not need to change the markings on that deck.

The damage count between these two photos is confusing, but John and Bob were shot down with only Todd left to press the attack.

Having sustained engine damage, Todd decided to return to his lines with BalticBob in pursuit, but unable to catch him. One of the sub chaser took 16 points of damage, which wasn't enough to stop it, let alone sink it, while damage on the other two was much lighter. However the middle boat did lose the use of its starboard Lewis gun due to crewman wounded/killed.

    Lessons learned:

    1) DON'T FORGET THE CARDS.
    2) The Italian defender was probably unnecessary since the boats act like bombers with two machine guns and an anti-aircraft gun.
    3) The A-H should have have four or more attackers, maybe with some small bombers thrown in. If the scenario required the USN boats to retreat off the map, then any downed A-H planes should respawn. With their superior speed, the airplanes would have returned to the action in about two turns.
    4) I don't plan to use this scenario again for quite awhile. Still some kinks to be ironed out.

Another good evening of chaos aloft!

I am happy to say that I even avoided turning my aircraft into a latter day fishing reef in the second encounter!

Very nice cards and it looks like a fun couple of games.

Great action shots there. Baltic Bob certainly was unlucky in that first game with 3 x 5 and a 1 damage card and 2 wounded pilot cards to finish him off!

Nice showing Robert - looks like a load of fun to be had.
Peter (Teaticket) provided a game in OTT ED that may be of interest to you or may help you work out the kinks:

    Thumbs up

Lots of hot action in those two games.

Came back to this post to view it on my laptop instead of the small screen of my phone and was pleasantly surprised to see your second AAR as well.
Both were really interesting - thanks for posting.

Some day my Macchi's will hit the table, along with all the other A-H and Italian aircraft sitting in tubs.

Looks like you have the same water that I purchased from Joann's Fabrics to play Teaticket's scenario that Dave mentioned.
I still have the info you posted a while back for getting cards done. Yours look great.
