Here are my latest Valom models - Werner Steinhauser (Jasta 11) and Rudolf Klimke (Jasta 27). I used a mix of valom (crosses) and homemade decals (anchors, etc.). From what I could deduce from internet, Steinhauser had an early paint version with the red band and yellow cross and a later version with the colours reversed. I preferred the yellow cross on red - with the tail in a reverse colours. I found a photo of the early version (red in mid-grey and yellow in dark grey for the fuselage band) doesn't show enough of the tail clearly but it could have been red with narrow yellow stripes.

    Thanks, guys.

Rob, I guess a “steady hand” in part but good brushes and ‘practice’ painting piping, flags and shields help. And each project is always an opportunity to learn something. Had sworn off decals on white decal paper but yellow on transparent decal paper didn’t work so well. The ‘eyes’ decal was perfect - perfect except not visible on red. So discarded the decals and hand painted those. Kept the yellow anchors but required a bit of painting to fix. So...it’s a mix of decal paper for future jobs.

On the virtual workbench. Sometimes you have to put matters of practicality aside and just do something colossal and insane, just for the fun of it. It's not quite as big as a Zeppelin-Staaken:

Still some fine details to add and minor things to adjust, and it won't be cheap, but getting close to a Handley-Page V/1500 for Shapeways/Sculpteo.

Ah, the V-1500. I remember it well. Very quirky I was tempted to make a few too. Mine are in wood, I like yours very much. Any clue the price in WSF or equivalent?

I haven't uploaded it yet so I don't have a price-guess. But that does bring up a question...surely someone out there has bought one of the Shapeways Staakens in WSF (Versatile Plastic). Did it hold up well under its own weight, or did the wings slowly warp? I've never done a model that large. While I'm sure it will hold up in the HP plastic (it is quite stiff) but I'm not as confident about the WSF material on a plane of that size.

A fun thing I learned about the V/1500 was that two of them were in pre-flight preparations (fueling, loading bombs, etc.) for a flight from England to Berlin on 11 November 1918 (ring a bell?), having postponed a run two days earlier due to weather. So you don't have to stretch very far to envision them used operationally.

I have 6 various wsf Staakens fully painted and detailed with no discernable issues. They are just too awesome not to afford!

Having finally lost patience with the builders not completing on time and with the added incentive of Keith supplying me with the final aircraft for My Polish 303 squadron, I have commandeered a corner of the dining table.
With the aid of a bit of touch up paint for the edges, here is the result of my endeavours for June.

Nice ones Rob. I have three more planes for the Belgium's but want to take my time doing them. I have been doing something different for a bit now. Started with Finns, did some Thai and expanded from there. I still have some Mosquitos to do for the Polish Squadron.

Yesterday I did the Belgium Hurricanes and Battles. here are 2 P-51's I did for the Israeli AF. In an Osprey book I have they show the first P-51 in what looks like a dark blue/brown camo scheme so here is my idea of it and one with a dark green/brown camo.

The Battles didn't do so well when they went to bomb a bridge. I think they send 18 and most were shot down.

    Yes. Wikipedia (here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairey_Battle) gives:
On 14 May 1940, in a desperate attempt to stop German forces crossing the Meuse, the Advanced Air Striking Force launched an "all-out" attack by all available bombers against the German bridgehead and pontoon bridges at Sedan. The light bombers were attacked by swarms of opposing fighters and were devastated. Out of a strike force of 63 Battles and eight Bristol Blenheims, 40 (including 35 Battles) were lost.

FLAK did a number on the attackers too, brought up quickly to the bridgehead; the '40 campaign was really a case study in new operational art vs. old.
