Thread: Curtiss H12 versus H16

    Default Curtiss H12 versus H16

Would there be any difference in the stats for a Curtiss H12 versus a Curtiss H16? I'm painting up the H12 from Sculpteo (RAF) and would like to get a custom base, so I would like reasonable stats. I have the Windsock pub and it's not clear to me if there would be any difference. Thoughts?

Yeah, the Windsock Datafile on page 2 makes it clear that the history and differences between the types is very murky. The chart in the back notes that fifteen were ordered as H-12s but delivered as H-16s, fitted eventually with 375hp Rolls Royce Eagle VIII engines. Which is the same engine used in the H-12B, confusing things even further. (The original batch of H-12s were fitted with 250hp RR engines, having originally been delivered as H-8s with 160hp Curtiss engines.) I would assume the increase in horsepower would have a good effect on speed, but I haven't seen reliable figures.

The only difference between the stats for the Curtiss H.16 and the Felixstowe are the maximum altitude. The 375hp engines might have a good effect on altitude too. I think the Felixstowe is a heavier airplane and the info says a service ceiling of 2900 m (stats = 7) while the Curtiss H.12/H.16 is 3300 to 3700m (stats of 9 for H.16). One could argue a max altitude of 8 for the lower end of the range (i.e., under 3500m) for the H.12 but that's a guess so I'll just go with the official H.16 stats for the H.12. Not that maximum service ceiling will make much difference in game play.
