Powered by an ultra-rare Siddeley Puma, HAC’S DH9 is now the world’s only airworthy WWI bomber.
The Historic Aircraft Collection’s 1918 Airco DH9 E8894/G-CDLI made its long-awaited first flight from IWM Duxford on 13 May 2019. Piloted by Dodge Bailey, it spent thirty trouble-free minutes airborne in the Duxford vicinity before landing back as the world’s only airworthy original WWI bomber. One of two DH9S retrieved from Rajasthan, northern India, by Guy Black at the start of this century, E8894 was restored by HAC’S restoration ‘arm’ Retrotec over a number of years. Fitted with a genuine Siddeley Puma inline engine, it had been undergoing ground-testing since last October, initial static runs latterly giving way to taxi trials.
