Powered by an ultra-rare Siddeley Puma, HAC’S DH9 is now the world’s only airworthy WWI bomber.

The Historic Aircraft Collection’s 1918 Airco DH9 E8894/G-CDLI made its long-awaited first flight from IWM Duxford on 13 May 2019. Piloted by Dodge Bailey, it spent thirty trouble-free minutes airborne in the Duxford vicinity before landing back as the world’s only airworthy original WWI bomber. One of two DH9S retrieved from Rajasthan, northern India, by Guy Black at the start of this century, E8894 was restored by HAC’S restoration ‘arm’ Retrotec over a number of years. Fitted with a genuine Siddeley Puma inline engine, it had been undergoing ground-testing since last October, initial static runs latterly giving way to taxi trials.

The ONE Show is now repeated at 1pm on BBC2 ...

How brilliant is that. I hope its on show 'cos I'm meant to be going to Duxford next Tuesday, for the Dakota D day landings show - I'll have to find time to visit this wonderful old girl too. Fingers crossed as I damaged my foot again, and add that to a bit of a chesty cough right now. But am hoping I'll just about be fit enough again by Sunday

Thanks for the heads up Rob

Thank you for this news, Rob. I have watched the segment from the One Show on B.B.C. iplayer and it was good to see the plane flying. I wish they had gone into detail about the comment that something a safety inspector did made the D.H.9 less reliable.

I was rather hoping that they would elaborate upon that remark too Dave.

I love this plane, there are four in my collection, haven't seen much use in our game though . . .
