Thread: Speeds of Planes

    Default Speeds of Planes

Somewhere I saw a speadsheet of plane stats which included speeds. I wish I could find it but really that isn't my question.

    For example
    Sopwith Snipe speed 4.7
    Nieuport Ni.17 speed 3.5
    Spad XIII speed 6.0
    etc...

I have two questions. First does anyone know what these number represented? Are they cm on the card?

Next, does anyone know the speeds for the new Series Four aircraft? I'm guessing the old and new reprints are the same speed; but what about those new one off planes.
Pfalz D.III (note not the D.IIIA)
    RAF S.E. 5 (note not the S.E. 5A)
    Breguet BR.XIV A2 (note not the B2)

That would really be helpful for me spreadsheet.

    Thank you,

Not certain which you mean: if you're talking about various files listing the in-game aircraft in terms of game performance, there's a couple in the files section, and a couple of files listing the various aircraft in terms of real-world claimed performance (remember, that these are mostly based on the manufacturers' claims, which can be....well...optimistic). All that aside, the speeds that you list above are in fact, the length of the straight arrow maneuver card, in centimeters.

    And secondly...the only real differences between the Pfalz D-III and D-IIIa were some layout changes to the guns, and other minor non-performance affecting internal details, so there should be no game difference, AFAICT;
    The SE 5 had a different, lower-rated engine, so it gets the Fr deck (vs the N deck for the SE 5a);
And the Breguet XIV A2 gets the H deck (as opposed to the K deck for the Breguet XIV B2)

I found a file/spreadsheet here in the file section. I can't seem to locate it now. It had numbers, like above, listed for the speed of the various aircraft. I didn't measure it and I'm not home at the moment to confirm, but I'm guessing those numbers were in centimeters of a single straight movement card for each plane. Also I wonder how the Fr deck is different?

I'm trying to decide on what to purchase. Unfortunately I'm one of those that doesn't get each and every one

They're the speed bands Ken, ie the distance the base moves:

    Speeds:
    6 - Very Fast (A,N decks)
    4.7 - Fast (B,C,F,H,L,M,O,Q,S,U decks)
    3.5 - Average (D,I,J,K,V,W,X decks)
    2.9 - Slow (E,G,P,R,T,Y decks)
2.3 - Very Slow (XD deck) (dependent on the size of base used)
1.3 - Sluggish (XB,XC decks) (dependent on the size of base used)
0.7 - Pedestrian (XA deck) (dependent on the size of base used)

Don't know yet what Fr deck is but the J & H decks are already in existence.

There is on file named "combatant_planes_by_year" which includes the speed amounts you mentioned.

Guessing the 'Fr' deck is based on the F deck which is the same as the N deck but in the slower (4.7) speed band - what the 'r' means I don't know.
Perhaps they've made some tweaks to it in some way. Time will tell, or maybe someone like Andrea who knows the actual answer !

Andrea stated that the Se5 was the speed of the Sopwith Camel, so presumably “fast”, same as the C deck.

one thing to remember. the X decks arent as slow as they seem due to the increased size of bombers bases.

Yep, same as the F deck which is the slower version of the N deck. It's what the 'r' stands for that's puzzling me - is it an erroneous addition to a promo image or is it to represent a tweak to the standard F deck ?

Hence the (dependent on the size of base used) addendum Phil.
I think when first written the author was relating the deck speed to the standard base length (for unofficial types) but as you know the subsequent Giant's bases are longer than the standard so the Staaken & HP O/400 are a bit fast than you'd expect.

Yabbut the XA XB XC are painstakingly slow when used with regular bases for the likes of a BE.2c

Got to agree with that Pete.

No, there is a difference of maneuvers between N and F deck.
N deck : 90° turn are steep maneuvers.
    F deck : 90° turn are non-steep maneuvers.

So Fr deck is the slower version of N deck.
Or a different phrase for a same result : Fr deck is a F deck but with steep 90° turns.

That would explain it , thanks Monse.
