Thread: OldGuy59's 2019 European WoG Tour

  1. #1

Default OldGuy59's 2019 European WoG Tour

"Dates on the calendar are closer than they appear."

It seemed so long ago, that I was contacted by Matt [Matt56], asking if I wanted to go to Prague. October 10th, 2018, actually. However, the last of the preparations are being done this morning to fly out, tomorrow.

So many emotions. This is the biggest trip Donna and I have been on, since the Canadian Military sent us to live in Germany, 32 years ago. All our other trips have pretty much been in Canada, as big as our country is, or small forays into the northern US states.

I will have my Vimy Ridge planes with me for the scenario I'm hosting on Saturday night. They are in my carry-on, so if they don't arrive, neither do I.

I am preparing my usual hand-out convention cards, and will have a few to hand out for players in my game. I started many years ago doing just participation cards, but I now hand out Ace Skill cards that people can try out during the demo. Then, if they pick up the game, or are already playing it, they have useful cards to enhance their future endeavors, and they get to remember their time at the Con. That I get to share these cards with people who really play and love this game, this time, is even better.

So, I have all the Wings of Glory stuff sorted out, and places for it in the luggage.

Although I haven't ever been face-to-face with any of the people I am going to meet, it is almost like I am going to see family. For this trip, it is family that has the same interests and hobbies. How often does that happen? No-one in my family, close or extended, is a gamer. Certainly not to the extent that I like to play.

Donna has her walking shoes packed, and although she isn't interested in WoG, or gaming to the extent I am, she will nonetheless be taking in the sights, tastes and camraderie of Europe, and wouldn't miss it for the world. She will get to meet some of the awesome people I have known virtually for years. And she does know of them. I talk about Forum members all the time, and she has heard them over Skype a few times.

There will be new places to see, good food and wine to try (and I don't have to do any of the driving!), and great people with which to socialize.

I am so looking forward to gripping hands with the faces and names I have come to know over the years on the Forum.

PS: I am planning a trip to the UK Annual Gather at Doncaster in September, as well, which is why I am calling this thread the European Tour. I will be visiting three countries this time, and England in the fall.

Technically the third airport, because the hop from Comox went to the commuter terminal. Then, a shuttle bus was required to get to Vancouver International. Which, on entering the building at 12 Noon, looked like this!

Fortunately, this was the line-up for an Air China flight, where the check-in was a few hundred meters down the concourse. Our check-in counter wasn't even occupied.

    Off to find lunch.

2:30 PM: Now checked-in and sitting in the departure lounge, waiting for the flight to Amsterdam.

    Poland - Krakow:

We hit the ground running, and Andy took us to a bunch of places.
One was the historical gathering place, and watering hole, of artists in old Krakow. Not surprising, our attention went to the stained glass throughout the place:

We shared a few glasses of wine, and walked around the old city for a few hours, attempting to push all the way to 'normal' bed time for us. It is now 11:30 PM (CET) and I have been up since 3:00 PM (CET) Sunday afternoon, with little sleep. Let's see if I even wake up tomorrow, for yet another attempt to scratch the surface of the many delights of Poland.

Note: It was a bit dark to take many pictures of the town. Beautiful weather for walking about the cobblestone streets. Brings back many memories.

No non-invasive WiFi at the Boogie Apartment House in Wroclaw. So, not a lot of posting.

However, a wonderful tour of the Wawel castle and the Air Museum in Krakow. They have many more planes than Comox. Composite pictures will be done on return to Canada, but for now, these:

OK. Last night was a wonderful tour of the old market Square in Prague, and a tour of sights that needed closer inspection. We were treated to some traditional folk dancing, and to an accapella performance by a group of ladies, including Daniel's significant other, Jitka. Daniel's idea, I think, is that Donna and I do the self-paced tours of these places over the next two days, as we get closer to the Con.

This morning, being that I didn't know what we had scheduled for us, and therefore not making any plans, we went to Hotel Mars for breakfast. This was so I could hopefully bump into Con members who had already arrived. This worked out well.

Paul was walking into the lobby, as I was going to get the hotel WiFi password, and we probably startled a few other guests with our hug-fest. He was heading out for a brewery tour, but advised that he and others were going to the scheduled visit of the crypts about which Daniel informed Donna and myself. So, we will meet more of the group tonight.

    Future Planning:
Just a thought. But, Donna and I could meet at the hotel for breakfast tomorrow morning, and coordinate plans for the day. What time should that be, for mutual convenience?

PS: I'm trying to load up maps of our tours on each posting, so bear with me on this...

This is the Google Earth path map of our tour through the Old City of Prague, and probably not correct. Daniel can sort me out with the landmarks he showed us, and then I can fix the map.

The Blue route is the walking tour, and in the market square (right under the "Prague 1" label) we met Jitka after her group's performance.
The Red route is the #22 Tram we took to/from the accommodations near the Hotel Mars (on the far right of the map).

If Daniel would be kind enough to PM me some landmarks, I'll fine-tune the walking tour and repost a detailed map.

PPS: And the better map, with Daniel's help:

Thursday, Donna and I went early, and walked around near the Cathedral (Next post, just below this one). The MPM Model Shop is where I found the Avrocar!

    PPPS:
Downloaded the camera today (two weeks later), and found Donna's images of the Charles Bridge that she took on Sunday, while I was being shot up by Colonial Vipers:

Out wandering about Prague this afternoon, doing recce for the evening tour, and I spied a model shop. It was a thought that I'd get some Valom 1:144 photo-etched Lewis guns. They didn't carry Valom, at all. But, he looked through some Brengun parts, and I suddenly remembered an old thread here on the Forum, about 'Weird WoW'. 'Do you have...?". Another dig through a box...

    Link: www.brengun.cz 1:144 Avrocar

Crazy that I came all the way to Prague to find a model of an obscure Canadian prototype vehicle, not made anywhere else, IIRC. What a blast!

We went to St Cyril's Cathedral, to the crypt where the Germans hunted down the paratroopers that attempted to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich. A 'birth of a country' event, and a fascinating display of a people's struggle against tyranny. Wikipedia.org -Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral

Afterwards, an opportunity to meet a few more of the movers and shakers of the Wings of Glory world, in and around the Czech Republic. There will be pictures, as there were a few taken, just not by me.

And, I will need help with the names, when the pictures are posted.

Just above the first complete car on the bottom left, in the background, you can see the tan building of the Hotel Mars (between the grey and yellow buildings). In the yellow building, on the bottom floor, behind the trees, is the 'Svět Deskových Her' game shop (not visible in this shot).
On the far right, is the Tram, the main way of getting around in Prague, and very convenient. Much better than most Canadian bus/subway systems with which I have experience. The city center is 15 minutes away on either of the #6 or the #22, and the next Tram is usually only 5-10 minutes wait.

I've been terribly delinquent in keeping this up-to-date, but, I've been busier at this Con, not running games, than I've ever been at Cons where I run all the games.

It seems that I have missed out on an important part of Cons where several pilots attend at the same time. After a long day of missions, one must really do in-dept debriefs to ensure the lessons of the day are accurately assimilated. Although, I suspect that that same assimilation requirement may be hindered by a large ingestion of alcohol.

The top two cards were +1 damage. A younger pilot took honours for this game, shooting down planes at a great rate. I think I only took out Rob, but I may have that mixed up. A less than thorough debrief that night, I suspect.

End of the game, run by Kubajs, with the Germans just edging out the RFC:

If you look at the first picture above, there is a target on the map, with 0 damage. There were respawning targets on the map, which could change sides as they were taken out. Points were awarded depending on the value of the targets, and for shooting down enemy planes. The German side's young 'hot shot' ran up our score, giving us the win.

Friday night debrief, with the older pilots:

    Interesting German-accented French briefing...

A distressingly large swarm of E.IIIs closing in from 7 o'clock, while some A-H two-seaters are harassing from 12 o'clock:

I am missing the picture of my 29 damage cards that it took to finally eliminate my bomber. I survived a fire, had engine and crew damage, and was a card away from hitting the second target, having missed the approach on my first. The A-H won, having prevented the Italians from bombing all the necessary targets.

    PragueCon Saturday Afternoon:

Japanese attempt to sink the carrier. We got it wrong. We thought we'd go in with a bunch of fighters, clear the skys, and then bring in the bombers and torpedo planes and sink the carrier. It didn't work out that way. For a player that doesn't use altitude, it just messes up the game, especially if there are house rules on climbing and diving turns to confuse the issue.

A few turns into the battle, and the Americans are launching their fighters at a pace quite a bit faster than the Japanese expected. Their CAP is already engaged with the Japanese fighters, but the Japanese players don't do much damage, not having adjusted altitude well.

There were a few times when it looked like serious fur-ball time, but altitude limited damage from collisions and shooting:

Somewhere along the game, I got bullet-sandwiched, and it was time to bring in something that would damage the carrier. We chose the bomber, as that was most likely to actually hit and hurt. The below image is from near the end of the scenario time-limit, with my bomber way too far away from the carrier, being harrassed by two Wildcats:

This is me dodging the Wildcats, firing my 'A' gun at the enemy, and doing insignificant damage:

So, the Japanese didn't clear the skys, and the bomber didn't make it to the target with the time remaining. Completely failed mission.

It may sound like it, but I'm not bitter. I'm frustrated that I can't seem to get a grip on the game mechanics of Altitude. I get that this is a game of air combat, and that it should be three dimensional, but it seems that any time I play with altitude, the game just looses its appeal.

Professional help required? Or, lots more practice?

PS: just to add insult to injured pride, the reverse scenario with the Americans attacking the Japanese carrier, the Americans not only hit the carrier, they sunk it.

Brings to mind that old saying: 'It's a poor technician that blames his tools.'

    PragueCon Saturday Evening:

    Vimy Ridge Recon.

The opening shots of the game ended up being the Red Baron against Albert Ball. They both chained their skills together, but neither went down. The below image was the second time they passed each other, and again chained their skills. The damage draws for the Baron's Sniping were much better than Ball's, and Ball went down:

One recon plane managed a single photo, but didn't survive to get a second one, nor make it off the allied side. The second plane took a withering hail of bullets, took two photos, and was getting ready for the run for home, when he took a short-ranged shot, and his luck ran out. Two cards: 7 points of damage.

Time ran out, and the RFC didn't get photos back to friendly lines.

I should mention that the young lad flying the Red Baron racked up a bunch of kills in this game, as well as he did in Friday night's game.

    Battlestar Galactica: Designer's Special

Colonials are to scan some planets. Cylons are to prevent this. There were some different ships to use: Cylon Mk I Raiders; and a Heavy Raider. These were accompanied by Mk II Raiders:

Note: the ship template at the bottom, between the Raiders and the ship Console, is the last known position of the Blackbird Stealth ship. When at least 24cms from any enemy ship, the player can state that he is 'going Stealth'. Then, he plans moves secretly, only completing the planned moves when ceasing stealth. The player then completes all planned moves from the last known position to present. Play continues as normal. No shooting, nor scanning, can occur by stealthed ships, but neither can they be targeted.

By the way, if others wish to post pictures on this thread, or send me pictures for me to add in to the above, it is obvious, at least in a few places, I didn't take enough pictures.

Also, help identifying individuals would be appreciate.

I'm curious for the responses of experienced altitude players, because I share the same feeling about the altitude rules. They seem to slow down the game significantly. And using altitude dials without even using the pegs to show the actual altitude differences visually, seems repellent, too. I think the altitude rule takes the ease of the game.

It is right to a certain extent. Once in a while my group uses the Alt rules and everybody is ok with this. It requires a bit of care and planing, but provides a lot of flying options. In fact the rules should be corrected to:
    1) climbing and diving +1/-1 uses just one card (forget different climbing speeds),
    2) climbing/diving turns should be added.

We played altered altitude rules in three missions on Saturday.
All fighters had Climb Rate 2, and all bombers Climb Rate 4.
And when airplane with better official Climb rate was shooting at the oponent at short range, it was claiming +A chit bonus (if both on same altitude and both with pegs or both with no pegs).

And I don't want to steal the topic, so all can see the altered rules, which seemed to be working O.K. here:
