OTTDYM mission 3 Knowledge is power.

    RFC

    Lt Bedard Sharp eyes Morane.

    Lt Rhodes P Jones Obs Be2 11

Lt Wagner P Cannon Obs and Morse code operator Be2 7

    Eagles

    Wiese P Brachell Obs Aviatik

    Priesner Sharp eye E.III

Bedard had lied when the MO had asked him if he felt fit enough to fly that morning His head still ached and from time to time his vision became blurred. Still he could always say he did not understand everything the Doc had said to him if things went wrong.

He had flow past his comrades in BE 2s on their mission to spot for the artillery . His mission was to hunt down a German 2 seater that was taking snapshots of the front line. Bedard pointed his Morane s nose skywards . he knew the German would be below 1000 ft and he wanted an advantage, For a second his head began to swim as the plane began to ascend.

Weiss was a cautious pilot. Nothing too risky, always got his passenger home. He was more at home artillery spotting than low level photos so he had instructed Brachell to get the shots , not take them.

JP approached the Aviatik from ahead and above, neutralising the pilots forward gun arc of fire .

A short burst and black smoke belched from the Germans cockpit.

Brachell saw the pale Morane but concentrated on getting a good series of photos .

As the Frenchman dropped past Brachell fired off a few rounds without aiming

JP swung into a hard right turn this time he intended to dive onto the enemy s tail,

The camera continued to click and the photo plates were carefully secured.
Gaining speed but losing height the Morane closed on its prey. 2 short squeezes on the trigger and a neat line of holes appeared in the Aviatiks fuselage

The Aviatik pitched, Wiese struggling with the controls , Brachell let off a stream of bullets at the Morane several piercing the the engine block but JP's rounds tore through the struts of the biplane

Wiese lost what little control he had of his plane. It fell towards NML.

The Frenchman limped back to the Barn nursing his engine as it spluttered and coughed.

Meanwhile the 2 RFC spottters headed towards the German lines. Crossing the safety of NML they swung towards the village of St Tugdual where the battery was thought to be.

Wagner got close as he could to the battery while Cannon tapped out the coded message, A few minutes later several shells hit the ground behind the battery throwing up a cloud of debris onto the guns,

Ordered not to approach the German lines. Priesner set his sights on the nearest plane. As he passed high above the lead plane he glanced down. The observer looked crouched over a box and not paying attention to the immediate threat the Fokker posed. ” Interesting” he mused .

The second Be2 was ahead of him.

Rhodes was flying escort and felt sorely over matched by the sleek German plane approaching from above. Hauling back on the stick the nose pointed upwards toward the Fokker, Perhaps he could get a few lucky shots in from the forward and rear guns

His wishes came true. Jones had spent time on the range and it showed as his first burst caught the German in the rudder.

Moving his sights forward he raked the engine with a second burst till a plume of smoke appeared. Then he felt the gun stop abruptly a bullet jammed in the breech.

Cannon tapped in the new ranges for the RA. He heard the Whoosh as the shells flew past his plane. Again they fell off target.
Rhodes was no marksman his first burst flying too high as the E.III passed in front of him

Priesner dropped and caught Wagner and Cannon as they turned for another run over the battery a severed fuel line caught and flames started to lick around the engine . Priesner fired again, his bullets ripping the wing fabric in an attempt to bring the spotter down before he got away.

The Be2 started to weave and turned away from the battery heading towards his lines .

Priesner would have followed but that meant crossing his own line. Reluctantly he turned away from the RFC planes now almost over the German trenches.

Still the battery was still intact and pounding the Allied lines .

So a draw as both sides got 10 points, unless you want to score for planes down
Thanks Baz for a nice little scenario.

Nice AAR. I liked the Aviatik too. Thank you for posting.

Bedard did well, one kill and returned to base, can't ask much more than that. I always like a drawn result, it shows the scenario was well balanced, but some times the cards take over and there's no balancing them. but this worked out well.

There are some nice planes, as Gary said the Aviatak is particularly good, as is the decal on the Morane - Le Vengeur, very nicely sized to fit. Is that your decal or was it on the original plane?

Well it still looks jolly good, I'm very envious.

Lt Bedard is taking a big chance there, flying with potential dizzy spells; he could auger in at anytime.
But it is said that fortune favors the bold. Have to give him a 'well done' on this mission.

Nice little scrap Paul - honours even on the day but JP is proving to be quite a fighter !

    Uncle says:

Well done old bean or should that be little cabbage ?! Another victory to your credit and you've shaken the rookie label so no restrictions now.
I've tidied the AAR & sorted the tally - that Hun observer was a tad unlucky - got thrown out on the landing and broke his neck, the infantry found him this morning and will ship his personal effects over so we can drop them at his 'drome in the morning. I'm sure his replacement will be there to catch them !
Now off to the bar with you and get the drinks in

A few nice little turns of phrase in that one Paul.
Much more refined than some of our other articulated Scotsmen.
I suppose it is all to do with that French Je ne sais quoi and Savoir faire that we keep hearing about.
Anyway first rate banter old chap.

Nice one Paul. Excellent shooting by Lt Bedard to take down the Aviatik. Pity about the photo recon., but as has been said already - a draw comes from a well balanced scenario. Well fought sir

    Thumbs up

    Well flown Paul!
I enjoyed your story telling in that one.
Glad all your chaps got home safely & Bedard got a good kill in spite of his medical situation.

    Rep on its way.

    Well done, Paul.
Saw this posted the other day but did not want to read it on the 'little screen'.

Nice way to enjoy my morning coffee.
