Default OTT DYM Mission 3- Knowledge is power - 19th Jan 1916: zenlizard

Mein lieber Bruder Wolfgang: 22. Januar 1916

My dear brother Wolfgang: 22 January 1916

Remember, I promised you that you could always call on me to protect you. These days, I am doing my best to protect you by protecting the homeland. I've had quite the exciting time doing it, as well. I have been up several times on barrier patrol, have seen several Frenchmen, and they usually fly away at my approach. Not so yesterday: yesterday, I was successful in an engagement with the enemy. Leutnant Gustav von Schwantzpeitschend and Feldwebel Sebastian Krokodil had been ordered to photograph a certain section of the front lines; I was to patrol nearby, in case any Frenchmen came over. Naturally enough, several did: a Voisin two-seater, a Nieuport two-seater, and a Morane single-seater.

The Nieuport started to attack my comrades,

while I attacked the Voisin. We exchanged shots while the gentleman in the Morane couldn’t get at me. My shots were far more accurate than the Voisin’s: I saw a burst of flame erupt from the Voisin.

But immediately afterwords, both of my opponents shot at me, and although I felt hits from the Voisin, I think the Morane missed. And then my rudder felt a little sluggish. [Note: I took 4 damage here, as the shots from the Voisin are at +1 for aim]

And then, while I was dodging the enemy attacks, I saw them collide.

[Note: Pic 9 is the fire damage on the Voisin, pic 10 is a near miss, using the peg overlap rule. In pic 11, I finally remembered that there is no Immelmann in the G* deck, and decided that the Nieuport would circle right, as the fastest way to attack the Albatros again]

Then, my brother, I performed my first fancy maneuver in combat: I did an Immelmann, a sort of climb and turn, so I could better attack again.

One of the most important things for a hunter to do is understand where he is, and where the enemy is. I knew the Nieuport was flying after our reconnaissance plane, while behind me were two of the enemy. This did not worry me: one of them was on fire, and the other was far behind. I had to get at the enemy so the Albatros could complete its mission. Shortly thereafter, the Voisin crashed, on fire.

While the men in the Albatros continued to photograph, the Nieuport continued to chase them, and I pursued the Nieuport, and the Morane was left behind. I thought, “I must catch up with the Nieuport before he can catch my comrades.”

It was a long chase, but as I was almost within range of the Nieuport, the Nieuport was still far away from the Albatros, but the Morane seemed to be catching up to me. I kept having to turn my head front and back, to make sure of where everyone was.

I caught up with the Nieuport just as von Schwantzpeitschend and Krokodil finished their job. Once again, I saw my shot damage an enemy plane, as I felt hits from them. Mine were more accurate, though: I saw the enemy rear gunner slump in his cockpit. [Note: the second of these exchanges again gets +1 for aim, while I do not, still having rookie status: but I did get a crew wounded card again]

I then reminded myself of two things: the Morane was still tailing me, and I was getting close to the front lines: we have orders not to fly into enemy territory, because we don’t want to give away the secret of our fighting aircraft. Therefore, I had to destroy the enemy quickly. I shot two more bursts into the Nieuport, and was rewarded when I saw my enemy fall from the sky.

When we turned for home, I had to perform a side-slip to avoid the enemy, but I was successful.

After the pilot of the Morane performed his own Immelmann, I continued to weave behind the Albatros, this time causing the enemy to have to try and catch us. In this, he failed; and I later found out, the Albatros crew had some film left, so as they passed the scene of the Voisin crash, they took pictures of the wreck.

As you can see, Wolfgang, I had a very successful day: two French planes destroyed, and I ensured the success of the reconnaissance mission. Do not tell mother this, but there was a moment when I had to take a risk, because the life of a fighter pilot can be quite dangerous. This is necessary in war, and I cannot foresee that I will always be so fortunate. Do however, give my love to Mother and Father, and be sure to be diligent in your studies. When you are old enough, you may be called to serve in defense of the homeland, as your brother has.

Onkel Ernst, did I make a mistake with the French Nieuport 12 crew, and should they have been counted as down in NML?

Another excellent victory for the Eagles Sam.

    Onkel says:

Well done Eagles, you clawed the Tommy from the skies !
Iron cross 2nd class for young Säugerjäger He'd buying tonight & sees his rookie status slip behind him.

As for being in NML - yes they probably should be, it's as much about the rough landing as anything else ! Let it slide on this occasion though.

If you can try to get the AAR all in one post by editing it and I'd find it helpful if you could italicise the German or change the font - Have a look at Pete's for an example. And please add the AAR prefix when you create the thread (or edit via Go Advanced.

    Good AAR!
Now, for the Nieuport 12, flown by S/Lt Antoine Pelletier and Cpl Louis Robert? Did I miss the squadron designation?

And is this close to the color scheme (or are the photos and my computer screen reading silver as blue?):

My fault; I had to also guess at the correct Escadrille, the closest I could come up with was either Escadrille N. 90, or Escadrille N. 12. I'm not going to quibble, the card is excellently well-done.

And your color scheme is as accurate as I could make my paint scheme. I custom mixed blue, gray, silver until it "looked right", so the gray-ish blue on the card is a match.
I'm always impressed by the job you do with the cards; this is no exception.
