Default HAVOC XXXV 5-7 April 2019

Once again it is time for BattleGroup Boston's yearly event, Havoc. Show web site event list 'HERE'.

I'll be running at least 4 Wings of Glory games, 3 on Saturday and 1 or 2 on Sunday as Sunday is a 6 hour period.

Below are the event listings for my games.

    Saturday 9am – 1pm
    201 Aerodrome Raid!
players 10 Wings of Glory WWI 1/144 WWI Peter Landry
Description: The USAS finally could take no more of the harassing raids on their airfields by the nasty Hun. An early morning raid on a Hun Jasta field was planned to hit it while the morning patrols were away. Jasta 2, out on the way to it's own patrol spot the intruders. Revenge will be sweet, but who will get to claim it?

    Saturday 2pm – 6pm
    310 Two Seater Trouble
players 10 Wings of Glory WWI 1/144 WWI Peter Landry
Description: An Entente patrol of scouts runs into an enemy patrol, thinking it was bouncing a flight of scouts. Should be, no trouble right? What, there is a rear gunner?!?!

Take a nimble scout and fly circles around the cumbersome tandems, or have a sting in your tail and teach those uppity scout jocks a lesson.

    Saturday 7:30 pm – 11:30 pm
    409 Godzilla
players 12 Wings of Glory WW2 1/200 WW2 Peter Landry
Description: There was a disturbance many miles off the coast reported by local fishermen. Incoherent messages could not be understood, then silence.
"Flight One to base, flight One to base, we're approaching the coast now. Ok, we see something coming out of the water. It's....gigantic. it's... it's...Tokoyo, we have a problem"!

    Sunday 10am – 4 pm
    503 Clash over Tunisia
players 12 Wings of Glory WW2 1/200 WW2 Peter Landry
Description: After Operation torch, the USAF and RAF covered the advance into Tunisia. An aggressive strategy turned the Luftwaffe on their heels and forced them to defensive operations.
Today you fly a mixed force of USAF fighters escorting a B-25 bombing raid on the port of Bizerte, or man the Luftwaffe with it's Italian ally who throw up every functioning plane to stop the raid.

Bill (NewFlyBoy) will be running a Sails game Friday evening.

    102 The Enemy Are Out!
players 8 Sails of Glory 1:1000 Napoleonic Naval William Brown
Description: The French Napoleonic fleet has been blockaded in port by the Royal Navy. A severe storm has dispersed the Royal Navy forces and a French commodore seizes the opportunity to make a run for the open sea. If the French squadron can make it to the open sea they will wreak havoc on the British shipping lanes. One British squadron stands in the way of the French plan. To win the game the British must take or sink at least two more ships than they lose. The French must exit as many ships as they can from upper left corner of the table in order to create havoc amongst the British convoys of merchant men using the trade routes.
Fast play basic rules easily taught. All materials provided.

At least you have a 3 week break between conventions. At least this con is a little closer then going to PA.

Yeh, one has to appreciate that. I got told about a con in Dayton the same weekend I might get to.

Havoc is only 4 1/2 hour drive compared to 10 1/2 for Cold Wars, nice. Huzzah is the best at 2 1/2.

3 weeks will give me time to come up with my Godzilla rules. That will be fun.

Good! I was going to ask you to bring your P-40(s) for Tunisia. I have 3 and would bring some AVGs if needed but with yours there will enough. Besides P-40s the US will fly P-39s, P-38s and B-25s.

I have one B-25 and will toss that in the bag as well. Really looking forward to it!

First battle I ran at Havoc was the Aerodrome Raid. Seven pilots were brave enough to take to the sky. Altitude rules were used with +1 damage for height advantage and diving. For each kill a pilot could choose an ace skill (max 3 per pilot) while a pilot shot down was randomly awarded an ace skill.

This is the same battle I ran at Cold Wars. This time the US had 4 planes against the 3 Germans. Ground fire was deadly and took down 2 Americans. The Americans devastated the aerodrome and its facilities but lost 7 planes in doing so.

One American pilot, Hank, received the Distinguished Flying Award for downing Five Germans while not getting shot down in the engagement.

2nd battle I ran was Two Seater Trouble. At Cold Wars the two seaters ate the British for lunch. There were 12 planes up in that one, 6 per side. This time I gave the Brits ace skills to help out. This and the 4-3 British advantage helped out and they won with 8 kills to 7.

The Germans started in a 3 plane vic and were jumped by 4 SE5as/dolphins, 2 on each side. The Germans were not allowed to Immelmann on the first turn.

    3rd Saturday game at Havoc.....Godzilla!

5 pilots flying 2 planes each were determined to save Tokoyo from the wrath of Godzilla. Altitude was not used.

Godzilla wading through shin high water (for him) can see Tokoyo in the distance. 10 Fighters approach from a distance. Two are in on a flank first and engage immediately while the rest fan out to avoid giving a multiple target shot to Godzilla's nuclear breath beam.

Godzilla sees clear skies ahead of him. Tokoyo looks like a tasty sushi. Tokoyo might look like London, but trust me, it's Tokoyo.

The Kamakazi spirit fills the heart of one pilot, Godzilla barely notices as the Hayate breaks apart hitting the massive beast.
    Name: IMG_3178.JPG
Views: 148
Size: 255.0 KB

All the remaining Japanese planes make a desperate last stand. Flying in his face to distract him, some sacrifice themselves so the rest can set up their attack run.
    Name: IMG_3179.JPG
Views: 141
Size: 262.2 KB

The effort pays off and Godzilla can take no more. He finally submerges beneath the waves after several planes had the chance to finish him off but could not do it.
    Name: IMG_3181.JPG
Views: 152
Size: 244.9 KB

The ending was quite dramatic as Godzilla was down to his last. Several turns went by with only one plane being able to line up a shot. One plane would get a shot thinking he would get the kill but came up short. So did the next, and next. Finally, Hank of the 5 kill game earlier, got the last shot to stop Godzilla.

13 planes were destroyed by Godzilla. It took 23 planes to take him down!

Game #4, Clash over Tunisia, I ran on Sunday. Two pilots were ready at the start but Bill (NewFlyBoy) had to leave as he wasn’t feeling well. (He made it home ok) I ended up flying escort for the random flying B-25s on their run into Bizerte.

I gave the attackers the choice of what they would fly. I brought ME109-Gs, ME 110s, Reggiane 2001 Falco IIs and Dewoitine 520s.

I flew a P-39 and a P-40. In the first wave of attackers were three Italian Reggiane 2001s. We started off using altitude but stopped when later on I coerced an onlooker to join in. He had never played before so I kept it simple for his initiation. He flew another Reggiane 2001 along with a ME109-G.

3 of the 4 games were well attended. The last at least I'm glad to have taught an interested player the game.

Godzilla is ~10" tall, perfect for the bases I use. He is not a model, another plus as I'm not worried about him breaking. I got him pretty cheap on ebay.

As a player in Peter's games at Havoc! I can say it was a really fun time (my hands made it into several of the pictures holding the "advanced German photographic technology"). I had a blast. That loud vacuuming noise you hear accompanying the pictures is my friend Hank sucking up the awards in all the games -- he had a Hall of Fame day. I will post my supplemental pics of Peter's games this weekend here along with the pictures I took of the Sails of Glory game I ran on the opening night of the convention on the over on the Sails site. Thank you Peter for another really fun weekend.
