Default OTT DYM Mission 3 - Knowledge Is Power - 19th Jan 1916---Vagabond

    The Morning Briefing

“Well boys we have some good news for a change, the C.O.’s had a call from on high and George Drummond is OK and has made it back through the lines and is waiting, god knows where, to get a lift back to the Drome. Apparently when his plane went down on that balloon busting mission, young Vagabond and I were involved in a couple of weeks back, he was pulled from the wreckage by a Belgian Farmer’s daughter, the family hid him and helped get him back round the trench system to the north of here”.

“He say’s that his Observer Lawless also survived the crash but was badly injured and couldn’t walk away. The Belgian Farmer’s daughter appears to be in touch with some local spy network and has informed us, through them, that Lawless was captured by the German infantry and is probably in some prisoner hospital for the duration”.

“That means my short but promising career as your Flight Commander is over when he returns to duty”.

    Ruairidh (Rory) MacNair

That’s my current Flight Commander Ruairidh MacNair giving us the good news, I’m pleased to hear it of course but my memory of Drummond was of a brusque Lieutenant who was more interested in meeting a young French Waitress than in giving his new pilots a helpful introduction to the squadron and the Airfield.

Mind you on reflection he probably had his priorities right.

“Vagabond you’ll be pleased to hear that your Observer Jack Cowan has been given the all clear by the local Field Hospital and is fit for duty” I welled up at the news, I’d only known Jack for a couple of weeks, he had some strange ways but I’d become very fond of him.

Jack Cowan with his trademark Top Hat, Goggles and American Footballers Helmet.

“The M.O. says that he would prefer him to have a bit of a rest for a few days, he lost quite a lot of blood in that last fracas and as he left the Field Hospital 2 days ago and hasn’t been heard of since that’s probably good news”. The C.O’s very pleased with his 2 kills and I’m sure will cut him a bit of slack, provided he gets back here soon.

I reflected on the rumour of a Top Hatted chap involved in a bar fight in Amiens, apparently took on four men from the Durham Light Infantry Regiment and hospitalised two of them before jumping over the back yard wall of the bar and disappearing into the night. Maybe he does deserve a bit of a rest.

“Right that brings you all up to date, so now you need to know about today jobs”.

“We have an Artillery Spotting Mission to take care of. The Jocks from B Flight are going to take deal with that, however we are to provide the escort and Vagabond, because you’re short of an Observer I’m going to let you take my plane, the red nose Morane on this mission. She’s called Gladys - If you smirk like that again Vagabond I’ll have you on a charge. Gladys is my mothers name and no one will be taking the Mickey out of that, understood? There’s just one thing – if you take Gladys out you treat her like a lady - I want to see her come back in the same condition as when you left, is that perfectly clear”.

“Ok – so you will provide the escort to the Twa Jocks, their job is important, they have one of these new fangled radio things in their plane, they can communicate with our artillery and provide correction details on the fall of the shells, once the artillery have hit the target then you can come home but not until then, is that also clear”. I just nodded. I’d met the Twa Jocks last night in the Mess and if my life depended on them I was in serious trouble.
“Just remember he continued your job is to see that they are able to complete their mission, not go swanning off and leaving them unprotected”.

    The TWA JOCKS
Left to right – Jock 2 Alec MacGreggor and Jock 1 Hugh MacIver. I was sure they were both 10 pence short of a shilling, very nice blokes and all that, but not quite all there either, if you know what I mean.

Rumour has it that Jock 2 sleeps with his Lewis Gun and that Jock 1 sleeps with his bottle of whisky, he’s a bit of a Jack the Lad regarding who he sleeps with, any brand of whiskey will do.

The other rumour is that they are really not Scots at all but hail from south London, taking on the persona of Scots when they enlisted to evade the Loan Shark who was after them for an unpaid gambling debt. Whatever the truth was, they both had a slightly insane, fish eyed smile that was a bit worrying – until you realised they were on your side and it was the Germans who should be worried.

They hadn’t been around when I arrived at the Drome, the official story was that they were on leave but the real reason was they were on a hush hush training course. Everyone knew it was the radio and artillery spotting course, it was so hush hush that everyone also knew it was taking place in St Omer, most of us even knew who else was on the course, it was that hush hush.

    Flt/Sgt Wilfred Berry.

“Right then Berry, Rory continued I heard about your landing the other day and I am surprised you made it through flying school, I had a look at your record and it appears you broke 6 aircraft during your training, all of them on landing. I can see why they named you Bouncer Berry, no relation to the Nigel Bouncer-Smythe the C.O. speaks of? No I didn’t think so”. “Well I don’t really see that I can entrust someone else’s life to your care with that sort of record”. “As you know, we normally fly two seat FE2b’s so I’m going to have to let you take up Henry De Lacy’s Morane to get a bit of flying time in and see how you shape up.
I want you to patrol this area of the lines and he pointed at the map. I don’t want you getting mixed up with any enemy aircraft, your job today is to familiarize yourself with the lay of the land and bring the plane back intact. Is that perfectly clear? Don’t forget – this is a French plane on loan to the British RFC and you must take good care of it”.

    Henry De Lacy

“See Henry before you take off, he is a little short sighted and had trouble perfecting his landing technique until the M.O. asked how he was taught to land. Apparently he was told to wait until he saw the blades of grass and then gently pull the stick back for a perfect landing. Turns out that because he is short-sighted, he doesn’t see them until it’s too late, that might be why you land 2ft below where the ground actually is. It’s worth a try anyway”.

“Right men you are due off in 15 minutes so be ready on the field, I’ll be there to see you leave. Vagabond before you go the C.O. wants a word, I think it might be about your flying suit, just say yes sir, no sir in the right places and you might get away with a stiff reprimand”.

    The C.O. – Major Kyte.

“Right Vagabond, that was a jolly good show you put up with Cowan and I’m pleased you both did so well, however I’ve heard of this flying suit of yours and need to see it for myself”.

Oh dear, - I’m grounded I thought as I took off my flying coat. I knew this suit was going to get me into trouble, but that’s what I get for trying to please Father.

“Good grief” he spluttered “I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a sight before”

“Humm - General Trenchard himself has sent me a communiqué, asking that I evaluate your suit on behalf of the General Staff, it would appear a General Melchett has expressed an interest in it”.

    General Melchett.

“Would you know a General Melchett he asked me in strange sort of a fashion” “Err yes Sir – he’s my God Father, he and my Father served in the Boar War together”

“Well young man, I don’t approve of favouritism but it would appear he’s not asking for a favour – apart from the fact that I let you fly in that ridiculous outfit, just an evaluation. So when you get shot and it doesn’t stop the bullets we can show him your body and I expect this incident will be over with.

Mind you, it’s not so long ago pilots were dropping darts on each other, now we’re using machine guns, what ever next, steel plates behind the pilot seats and parachutes I’ll be damned.
However if you do get shot down and captured I insist you tell the Germans you are in No 5 squadron, I’ve never liked Major Sippingly-Smythe their C.O. and the Germans can laugh at his expense. Is that clear?” “Err – Yes Sir”

“How are getting on with Jack Cowan, he’s a damn good man to have by your side in a fight but can be a bit unpredictable”.
I thought of the bang on the head when the Huns flew into view and the rude gestures but nodded, “yes Sir he’s been a big help”, thinking of the time I couldn’t find our way home and he gave me some very sharp advice about following the bloody railway line that a blind fool could see, or obviously not in my case.
“Well he’s taken quite a shine to you my lad” he said, I looked flabbergasted “Oh yes he continued, the last pilot who got him shot couldn’t sit down for a week after Jack kicked him up the arse so hard when they landed.”
“I gather from 2nd Lieutenant MacNair he was singing your praises, sticking to that Hun like glue on your last patrol, even though his Lewis Gun was jammed so badly he couldn’t return fire and they were blowing lumps off your plane”. He’s a strange man that one, better to have him on your side than not.

“Very well, - off you go and do take care of the Twa Jocks”. “No I don’t mean just look after them – I mean look out for them, don’t get on the wrong side of those two wee laddies, I’ve lost a couple of pilots who were on patrol with them and didn’t return, not a Hun in the sky, no really good explanation either, he paused obviously wondering if he should have said as much. “Anyway - jolly good chaps to have on your side in a scrap, a jolly good team don’t you know.

30 minutes later we were just crossing the lines, the Germans had made a swift advance and were starting to dig in, at the moment the ground they had taken was marked by shell holes but not much else.

Jock1 waggled his wings and pointed to where I could see in the distance the guns that were our target. They were well camouflaged and our artillery was having no luck hitting them but we would soon change that I hoped.

Off in the distance Wilf Berry was flying a lonely course through the sky, trying to get the feel of the small monoplane. So was I, it seemed so tiny compared to the FE2 that I’d grown used to and also very scary being in the plane on my own, no top hat obstructing my view, no Jack to guide me home and there was always the unspoken message about the Twa Jocks to think about.

I was keeping a close eye on them and when Jock1 MacIver banked to port I was ready and kept station. Jock2 MacGreggor held up a big gloved hand with his thumb uppermost, I acknowledged his approval with a big grin.

Over to my left I saw Berry also bank to port and following his line of flight I could see a black dot in the distance. Well I hope he can fly better than he can land was the only thing that went through my mind as I concentrated on the guns and the Twa Jocks.

We straightened out together although Jock1 side slipped a bit closer to me, but I could see he was right on line for the target, and Berry seemed to have decided to ignore his instructions and attack the plane in front of him.

I could make out that it was an Albatros 2 seat jobbie and they both fired together. The Observer was doing something over the side of the plane, I later realised he must have been taking photographs.

Wilf then side slipped to port and they missed a head on collision but the Albatros gunner took full advantage of the move to stitch a line of holes down the side of the Morane.

I felt fairly pleased with myself, I was between the Jocks and the enemy plane but flying quite close to the FE2, Jock1 had side slipped even closer to me but we were still a reasonable distance apart. This is my third mission and I’m flying with almost a full deck, well you might disagree with me on that, but I’ll explain at the end.
I knew they had to be quite close to the target before they could coordinate the artillery fire and I was hoping to see some action soon.

The Albatros had turned to port and was flying down the lines so I’d decided I must keep him away from the Jocks so I turned to port also, it’s a good thing I did because I felt the plane buck in the air and heard a loud explosion just under where I would have been flying. The first ranging salvo had missed, falling short but quite close. I’m not sure if the passing of the shells had caused the disturbance in the air or the explosion but it certainly made a big impression on me.
Wilf Berry is starting to turn to port, as a rookie on his first mission he is flying with a reduced deck as well and can’t Immel. Again I see the German Observer leaning over the side of the plane and he is definitely taking pictures.

I continue my turn to port thinking about the advice I got from Henry De Lacy on my last mission, don’t attack them head on, swing round behind them and get on their tail. I open fire and see a small red flame start to appear near the engine off the Albatros, I was a bit surprised by how quickly the Observer turned in to a Gunner and returned my fire but luckily he completely missed me.

I stayed on his tail, continuing to fire, I couldn’t close the gap between us but the fire had taken hold and the longer I kept him in my sights the more accurate my shooting was. Unfortunately this is a high risk strategy when following a 2 seater as they get more accurate too, I could feel the bullets smashing into Gladys, fleetingly it went through my mind how I was going to explain this to Rory but I was more preoccupied with the bullets flying around me now than what the future explanation might be.
Looking over my shoulder for a quick glimpse of Berry I can’t see him, he got confused and a bit rattled by his encounter with the Albatros and lost sight of the action, eventually finding his way back to the Barn.

I was so involved in my duel with the Albatros Gunner that I didn’t see the appearance of the Fokker E.lll the sight that had spelt the death knell of many an RFC pilot in the preceding months although with the arrival of the FE2 at the front they were becoming out matched and even obsolete.
Jock1 is in a circling pattern waiting to call in the next strike on the big guns below him.

They close fast, I can see bits of canvas flying off the FE although this soon stops as the Fokker’s gun jams, but Jock2 doesn’t seem to be on target at all. He was probably concentrating on the main job in hand, the one before staying alive became the main job in hand. However this encounter meant he missed his next call to the guns and they promptly fired another salvo that predictably landed in the same spot as before.

The big FE and the much smaller E.lll collide and the Fokker comes off the worst from the encounter. Quality control was never one of Anthony’s strong points, so it’s probably only a surprise that the smaller plane didn’t break up in the air.

I’m still tailing the Albatros but have decided I need to leave him and go and help defend the FE, after all that is my mission as was forcibly impressed on me, but I can’t resist having another crack before I peel off. I can see that I’m causing damage and it’s a hard choice to leave a sitting duck and what would be my first kill, but it had to be made.
The Albatros Observer has blown his mission by not taking pictures during this running fight but I decided that survival was going to be more important to him than snapping the countryside. Sorry Barry.

Just at that point there is a huge explosion in front of me, Jock2 has called in his corrections and the 2nd salvo of shells must have hit the ammunition dump, the whole lot goes up in the air with a tremendous explosive blast.
I can see the Fokker rise straight up on the thermal.

Then I saw him fly out the far side of the plume of smoke, Jock1 was already turning the big FE round on it’s starboard wing tip, he’s flying like I can only dream about. Jock2 was alert and opened fire as soon as he could see the enemy machine, but his gun jammed straight away. What frustration.

He’s hitting the deck. A Kill to me, my first since I arrived at the front, I hope one of the Jocks saw it to corroborate my claim. All I can hope is I get back home to make the claim, I don’t want to be credited posthumously.

With a number 3 wound all I can do at this stage is turn as hard as possible for home, I was expecting with their job done the Jocks would head home as well but they are turning hard to get at the Fokker, but with the Lewis jammed they can’t inflict any damage. I think Jock1 might be trying to ram the enemy plane!

Same phase just a more dramatic angle. The Fokker is turning hard to port and is within a whisker of having me in his sights.

But the next phase he does manage to open fire on my Morane, causing more damage, both to the plane and the rudder, I kick the bar to either side and it barely moves, fortunately by now I’m lined up for the homeward journey and take a tight grip on the stick, grit my teeth and hope for the best. I’m at 9pts of damage with a 10Pt max, have a No3 wound and rudder damage to both cables. How am I going to explain this to Rory.

At this point there are a couple of missing photos, the Fokker is going in a big circle to port and the Jocks are flying away from the none existent camera along the line of the shell holes.

Jock1 shouts loudly at Jock2 who goes pale and lets go of the Lewis and clutches the side of the cockpit as the plane climbs, half loops and rolls, coming screaming back at the Fokker after doing a perfect Immelmann turn. The Fokker had made his turn too tightly and Jock2 is in the prime place to fire, unfortunately his fingers are so stiff from holding on so hard that he can’t get a good shot in. I’m watching this perfect flying display in awe as I limp my plane home.

Then jinks left and sees No Mans Land in front of him. MacIver shouts to Jock2 a second time and Jock2’s face goes ashen this time. I’m too far away to see it but I just know that's what he looks like, and I'm convinced by now that Jock1 is trying to ram the Fokker.

They both pull an Imell and then the Fokker turns to starboard but Jock1, cunning as a fox sideslips out to the right, after all the acrobatics it’s no wonder the shooting is wild, except one lucky bullet strikes the big rotary engine in the Elll and it starts to judder and vibrate like a mad thing, the pilot knows his only hope is in flight, to run away as fast and far as possible from this demon pilot in the drab green machine.

2nd Lt John Vagabond FRTB - WIA – 1 Kill

    C&W Rolled 5 -1WIA +1RTB = 5 Injured Skip 1D3 Scenarios = Rolled 5 skip 3 scenarios. Bugger.

Well it could have been worse, I got my first kill but will miss the next 3 missions. I know you will be wondering if they will be taking me along to show General Melchett the bullet holes in the armour and the corresponding ones in my body and explain what a failure it is, the armour, not the body. Although I do wonder sometimes, however no more of that.

Well the truth of the matter is that I got hit in the leg and the armour doesn’t cover that area, a bit of an oversight if you ask me. I shall be sending a letter by the next pigeon to Father requesting additional pieces to cover the rest of me.

Anyway on landing I managed to get out of the plane unaided and started to hobble over to the Twa Jocks to apologise for not sticking closer during the fight, but the blasted leg gave out and I fell rather hard and they came running over, punching the air and hurrahing and huzzaing. They were as pleased as can be with their kill and the blowing up of the guns, I do think they rather enjoyed the explosions. Between them they picked me up, quite unceremoniously for a wounded hero and carried me into the office, waiting with scarcely concealed patience for the tender to arrive and whisk me off to the field hospital. Before I was even in the back of the wagon, they were running off to the mess, shouting “the drinks are on Vagabond he got his first kill today and will live to pay the bar bill. Huzza”.

Thanks to Barry for a great scenario, it took me a while to figure out where everyone was supposed to start and I have to say I thought it might be a bit balanced in the favour of the British, but when Wilf Berry flew off the table, I thought that’s kismet. I had a very lucky 2nd roll for targeting the guns and that gave the Twa Jocks space to go after the Eindecker. Towards the end of the game when the Fokker got the final shot into my Morane I thought that’s it, 2 or more and I crash in enemy territory, picking the 1 made my day. As this was my 3rd mission I had added most of the manoeuvre cards back into my deck, only the Immelmann card was missing, there were the usual Rookie penalties but none affected me this game.
I just need someone to show me how to Immel and in 3 weeks time I'll be back at the front - no longer a Rookie, well at least in the campaign.

So sitting on the side lines will give me the opportunity to introduce more members of the flight and I hope to enjoy developing them as much as the ones already in play.

P.S. Champagne, Malt Whisky, Calvados, well in fact anything alcoholic can be sent care of Field Hospital 6, ward 10. Two fine cut glasses would be appreciated, there is a very pretty nurse on my ward whose acquaintance I would like to make and drinking out of the hospital tumblers is a bit crass on a first date.

A grudging well done to the RFC on this one, John.

We'll most certainly be getting replacements for the Fokkers soon. Beware the Hun in the Sun!

Super job John, rattling good story of derring do & don't ! You'll have to keep an eye on Berry - flying off the table... What a clot ! (You can correct the AI if you like)... Thoroughly enjoyed it, great visuals, pics and story telling - and a pretty damn good Tally

    Uncle says:

Bally well done chaps - two Huns bagged and mission accomplished, who can ask for more ?! Well, I'll be asking for a pint from each of you later, Vags' will have to be on his slate as the MO has other plans for him I hear
Got his first victory & just about survived the first three weeks so can shake off his rookie status. Well done
Excellent report, got the Hun crew arsey varsy but otherwise decently presented - Old hands take note
Make sure you add the AAR prefix when you create the report though...
You have chewed up their tandems recently - I'm sure that replacements will soon arrive if they haven't already

    REP gun jammed.

I love reading your AARs, John. Rep has been dispatched - please don’t shoot the pigeon
Great visuals as usual, and the flavour you add to the telling is first rate.
With your mention of Melchett I wonder when Slack Bladder will make an entrance, perhaps to steal you armour ...

Too bad you will have to watch from the sidelines. My own rookie will be returning in Mission 3 (set for March 22) hopefully with a custom painted E.III if I can get it done this weekend before heading to California for another business trip.

Sam I think WoW is a perfect example of the old quote " it doesn't matter if you win or lose but how you play the game" I don't think anyone is keeping score, certainly I'm not. I am however having a great time with these solo scenario's.

Time wise I think we are in a good place, the Elll is not all powerful as it was a couple of months earlier but the Germans have some excellent two seaters so swings and roundabouts. I am looking forward to flying my DH2's against my new Halberstadts as none of them have been on my table before.

Thanks Ken - that's all I hope to provide, no one is going to learn anything from my flying skills.

Pete I hope you don't mean Speckled Jim, that would be a court-martial offence!!!

Thanks for the Rep, I've read a lot of AAR's on here and hope I learned something from them all, indeed I've borrowed ideas extensively from other folk, yourself included, as you know. I do enjoy my pilots stories almost as much as the games.

Hope to see your AAR soon, having to go to California sound desperate, the weather here is awful at the moment but it does mean I'm about to start putting my new games room together so that's a plus.

    Thumbs up

Another wonderfully told AAR John & a convincing win as well.
Young Vagabond needs to learn from the story of our Ned Kelly (Bushranger) who made a great suit of armour but was brought low by shotgun pellets to his unarmoured legs!

    Rep on its way!

    Well done.

Excellent John. A wonderful tale well told. The Jocks are an interesting couple I must say - their future exploits should be interesting indeed. Pity about young Vagabond. The rest may do him good, of course, but I'm sure he'll be impatient to get back into that suit of armour. Are we going to see him complete with tasset, cuisse, poleyn, greaves and sabatons? Now that would be a sight for sore eyes - I suspect it would cost daddy rather a lot too Or perhaps the weight would be too much for the Morane REP inbound and thanks for the entertainment

Enthralling story line John and you are also drawing some very interesting cameos of the personalities in your Flight.
I can hardly wait for the next stunning installment.

The Prefix doesn't come from the title John. When you create a new thread (or edit it via Go Advanced) you will find Prefix is above Title. The box bears the legend (no prefix), if you click on the arrow beside that it gives you the option to select AAR or BRF.
apols too, in a senior moment I accidentally deleted the rest of your responses trying to snag the one above. Comes from trying to talking with management whilst trying to run a sub-forum.

Dave, I think I understand the prefix thing, I didn't realise there was one, will try and remember next time. Don't worry about deleting my responses, I think I was just complementing you and your A.I. system, nothing important.

Thanks guy's, I hope you are enjoying the reports because that aren't half long winded other wise, of course you can always skip to the end.
