Default AAR - Variation on OTT DYM Scenario 2 (2nd half)

    The Scenario Set Up
This is AAR is a variant of the 2nd mission of the OTT Campaign – Daring Young Men: Coming and Going. This would be the going part – i.e., intercepting an enemy reconnaissance mission which is intended to assess damage done by a previous enemy bombing mission. The scenario was designed by Teaticket:

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...g-by-Teaticket

My variant is set in the Fall of 1917 on the Italian Front.

In the first half of the scenario two scouts from Flik 55J-bis flown by inexperienced pilots intercepted one of the returning bombmers – a Caproni. They managed to shoot down the Caproni but were both shot down themselves.

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...least-halfway)

This AAR picks up the action from that point. The scenario rules are that if both scouts from the first half survive they continue on to the second half but if at least one of the scouts is downed or forced to return to base there will be a reinforcement scout. Since I lost both scouts, there will only be the reinforcing scout which will have the mission of intercepting the reconnaissance aircraft. The recce aircraft will be escorted by the same airplane that escorted the Caproni.

Note: the escort was only supposed to appear with the recce aircraft. If I done the scenario as intended there’d be two intercepting scouts. So to compensate I gave the reinforcing interceptor two ace skills – trigger finger and sniper.

As I don’t have an appropriate recce plane flown by the Italians in late 1917, I substituted a RAF RE8 – supposedly because the Italians are evaluating a replacement for their aging recce planes.

    The Scenario Action
Feldwebel József (“Josi”) Kiss was searching the skies for two Albatrosse from Flik 55J-bis. József was from Flik 55J whose pilots were supposed to mentor those from Flik 55J-bis. The CO of 55J-bis, Michael von Taaffe of Irish descent, was having second thoughts about sending up two of his young pilots alone. So he had phoned Josef’s CO, Oberleutnant Josef von Maier, and asked that one of von Maier’s pilots be sent out to look after von Taaffe’s.

József didn’t particularly like the job of baby-sitting but he liked the Oberleutnant. There were some CO’s – like the CO of Flik 42J - that could real bastards when it came to how they treated their enlisted men. In 55J, Josef, as he liked to called by his men (in the mess only, not when on duty – then it was Herr Oberleutnant) had created a real camaraderie among the officers and enlisted pilots.

József had met the pilots of 55J-bis. All were young and inexperienced – not that József was old, he was just 21 years old. Neither was the Oberleutnant, who was 28. József so desperately wanted to be an officer. His grandfather was a generalleutnant but he was executed for choosing the wrong side in the revolution of 1848-49. Perhaps becoming an officer would in some way redeem his family name.

József’s thoughts were interrupted. Off in the distance he saw several aeroplanes engaged In combat. One was an enemy Caproni, two were Albatrosse painted I the scheme of 55J-bis and other looked like it might be a Nieuport. Those are our boys, he thought. He banked his machine right, in the direction of the combat, but in an instant all hell broke loose. One of the Albatrosse exploded, while the Caproni was on fire and in a death spiral. The remaining Albatros looked like it was in trouble too. Damn…two of our machines down but at least they got the Caproni. Time to make the Nieuport pay his dues.

Before József could reach the Nieuport, it had turned around and rendezvoused with a reconnaissance aeroplane. József didn’t recognize it but it was clearly a two-seater that was probably on it’s way to determine whatever damage the Caproni had done. Well, thought József, he won’t find out if I can help it.

You need have debt, Nieuport, thought József, but it will have to wait until after I deal with the snoop.

The RE8 saw József just in time to bank his machine out of the way of József’s bullets.

A few bullets from the RE8 ripped through József’s wings. I’ve got to focus, thought József.

Photo 7 (end of phase 7) is MIA: I thought I took it but apparently when I checked this morning it wasn’t there. There was a brief exchange with minor damage on both the RE8 and József’s machine.

Photo 10 (end of phase 10) was also MIA and it was an important one. József did major damage on the RE8 (see butcher’s bill later).

That evens up the score; now for that Nieuport, thought József. He checked his fuel gauge. Damn, he thought, another time Nieuport – another time. He banked his plane right and headed back to base.

End results – a victory for Fliks 55J/55J-bis

It took a while but Feldwebel Kiss finally bettering the recon plane. He got a bit lucky that the observer was a bad shot! Well done.

Josi wasn’t hitting too well at the start either. Maybe we can put it down to the intermittent cloud cover obscuring the target(s).

    Nicely done, again, Paul.

I really like the cloud effects you put into your photos.

Didn’t take long once I figured out the settings in my photoshop program (Corel Photoshop Pro).

Well done on part two Paul, timing that interception is crucial or you'd never catch up with the RE.8, so many people try a head on pass then turn late & can't catch up.

A very well presented action from start to finish Paul.
Yes! Those clouds really add an extra dimension without obscuring the play.
Well done all round young man.

Aim where they will be not where they are....or if your the target, don't be where they're aiming

    Thanks, Rob.

I was quite happy with the clouds. They're basically a white circle with three different levels of opacity (80%, 50% and 25%) layered from most opaque to most transparent. I suppose I play with the program I could figure out how to do different types of clouds. Tried not to obscure play but did cover bases when they weren't relevant and vast areas of green board where one should have had roads, hedges, etc. Somehow roads always seem to be at the bottom of my terrain to do list. For the most part they don't really affect table top play....as much as, say, troops - painting of which always seems to get priority.

Gut gemacht an unsere Österreichischen Verbündeten!

(Good job to our Austrian allies!)

And I'm also a big fan of the cloud effects. Rep gun jammed, though.

That happens to a rep guns.

With a nod to our Hungarian ace, Josi...technically should it not be Österreichisch-ungarische Verbündete ....or so says Google translate (I’m not sure it got the grammar right)

Btw Has that disc calmed down?

Technically, it should be Österreichisch-Ungarische Verbündeten , with capital letters (in German, nouns are capitalized), and should certainly have an -n at the end, unless what I meant was specifically József, the individual...Verbündete is the singular, Verbündeten the plural. To make things more confusing, Verbündete is uncharacteristically, either masculine or feminine, whereas the plural takes the usual feminine grammatical gender. It is very true that gender in German makes no sense.

No, it seems to have gotten worse, but on the upside, the MRI Monday night was quite soporific...I dozed off at several points during the procedure. Now, when I can schedule an appointment with the spine-dude, I can really find out what's what.

I was pretty sure that there it should be Verbündeten and not Verbündete but was unclear about whether it was Österreichisch-Ungarische, Österreichischen-Ungarischen,Österreichisch-Ungarischen or even Österreichischen-Ungarische. Yes, google did give that last one one in one variation which I found surprising. So at a loss with respect to extra n's or not I left it as is. I took a bit of Dutch when I lived in the Netherlands (Zuid-Holland) and their grammar is a lot easier but you do need to cough and spit a lot to pronounce the words.

Hopefully there's something they can do to relieve the pain.

Another nice report Paul, you went to a lot of trouble with the scenery and it's paid off in the photos. Good thinking with the photoshopping.

Probably all correct, depending on regional dialect. *THAT* I have no hope of differentiating.

Thanks. Fortunately the 6mm figures are far enough away that people can't spot they're for 1914 - to me it's more interesting to game the more mobile phases of the land war. I had all the figures out because I'm rebasing some and relabeling the others for Command Decision WWI variant. Currently they based for Principles of War. I've got a pile of recently received Baccus figures for the re-basing so it's something I need to do anyway.

I think I will do some NML tiles to overlay the basic game mat. Should be easy enough to as there's some NML in the download files section. Print out, paste on to some firm backing material, and flock with brown material.

It's the hills that were the most trouble. They really got in the way. Doing them with my geo-hex will help but there'll still be some problems on the edges.

Thanks, Barry. It’s all part of the effort to one day join the illustrious OTT ranks. You chaps set high standards indeed. Now I’m looking at an online site for those backdrops. Hmmm....
