Default Aerodrome Accessories BSG Ruler Set Review

I posted this on the BSG FB page a while back, but I though I should repost here as well.

I purchased the ruler set from Aerodrome Accessories which came with one range ruler and one drift ruler and I thought I would give my unbiased review.

    The good:
I have tried to examine the rulers as best I could comparing these rulers to the cardboard ones included in my Core set by overlapping them and by placing them side by side and I can only say, if they’re not dead on accurate, they’re about as close as you can get without needing a microscope. Both rulers are very stylish and come in red and white, or grey and blue. The drift ruler has small triangles on either side to indicate correct facing and each side is labeled (“2-4” or “5-6”). The range ruler has clear sections for each range category and indicates the bonus for each section, as well as having a star to indicate tailing range.

    The bad:
The set that I purchased came with a sticky residue along the edges (probably from tape of some kind). The edges were also rather coarse and had some paint that looked like it had bled into that section and wasn’t supposed to be there. I used an adhesive remover to get the sticky substance off, and some of the bleeding paint came out too. I then used an exacto/art knife to clean up the rough edges and that removed the rest of the paint. These problems were all fixable and I was somewhat surprised that the rulers were shipped before they were cleaned up.
As far as the functionality of the rulers, I’d have to say there is a minor problem with the reverse side (the side used for vertical differences). On the rulers that come with the Core set the third range band is a section that is not used (a null section) and is coloured black and has a red x through it. These rulers have the section coloured red just like the other sections on the ruler and have no x, making it appear as though it were just another section and not a null section. This is a minor gripe and is something I’m starting get used to.

    The verdict:
After the cleanup (which didn’t take much) I have to say I’m very pleased with my purchase. I have purchased rulers from other vendors for other games and have had problem from paint coming off, to cracking, to measurement accuracy. These rulers seem extremely accurate, the colour is staying put so far and they are attractive. These rulers are about twice the thickness of the cardboard rulers, making them feel rather sturdy and easy to use when measuring range from the stem of your ship’s stands. I would give these rulers a 9 out of 10.

Thanks for the review BronzeSparrow. The rulers you pictured above are a little "dirtier" then normal. I was having laser issues for a bit and now that they are sorted out, the rulers come out cleaner. There will always be a little bit of "color transfer" on the edges and the laser burns away the top color and it gets pulled through the cut by the down draft. The tackiness is also a by product of the laser. It typically goes away after a while or can be cleaned off as you did. As the only person designing, making, packaging and shipping these, I can't always do the best clean up job on them without raising the cost

I have also made an adjustment to the drift ruler. It how has notched cut into it to except the small tabs on the ship bases. I'm replacing the old style upon the customer's request.

Also, would you mind linking me to the BGG post you made about these? Thanks.
