Default BSG Game Demo - Curious Comics Gaming Extravaganza, February 2019

I have been invited to appear at the Curious Comics Nanaimo Gaming Extravaganza on Saturday, 16 Feb 2019.

    Facebook.com - Curious Comics Nanaimo - Poster

Yeah, I know. Not a lot of warning.

Anyway, I will be there, showcasing both Tripods & Triplanes, and BSG. And as I usually do, I will be handing out Participation cards for people who try out the games.

For BSG, I think something like this might work out:

I now have a template for talent cards, and can write my own, as well as reprint official talents.

    Thanks, David.

I just tried out sleeving the original BSG cards, but my Euro-sleeves are a mm too small. So, back to the template 'drawing board'

This card is 45mm wide, not 47mm as per the originals.

So, I didn't actually get any participation cards done up, because after I finally got the cards to fit a sleeve (44.5mm widex64mm high), I didn't have time to do the printing, cutting, and sleeving. Darn. But, the cards will be ready for the next event!

Anyway, the weather didn't conspire too badly, and I made it down to Nanaimo today.

As Mike, the event organizer, wanted to check out BSG, I started my set-up with that game. In front of the display on the back table, was the Tripods demo set and a few WoG planes. I had intended to run both games, but without another demo host, I changed that to running one at a time. I never actually ran the Tripods demo, but did show the WoG game mechanics to a gentleman that was so interested he went into the Game store to buy a copy. Curious didn't have any in stock, although they did bring in a few BSG Starter Sets.

My table was just near the Curious Comics store (view from the other end of the tables):

Mike, the event organiser, in the plaid shorts is standing to the left of the store entrance.

Mike did start to learn, but was called away. He rooked Brian, a gamer passing by, to fill in. Brian was a very elusive novice, and managed to avoid a lot of shots. In this image, we had started overlapped. I did a change direction and a really tight left turn to exit a KE1 drift to the lower right. Brian was drifting up the shot coming out of the asteroid field, did a change direction and backed up! I ended up just in the very left edge of his firing arc, and took a chit+chit damage!

I did win the game, but only because Brian's FTL jump scattered, as he rolled snake-eyes. Instead of drifing across my butt, firing away at closs range, he drifted across my nose at close range, back to me. He drew the chit+chit damage draw, instead of me. We were both at 11 accumulated damage at this point, so it was really whomever got a decent shot first for the win. Today, that was me. Really tight game, with lots of maneuvering.

Mike never did get back to play a game. Darn.

I took a moment to check out other games hosted for the day, and met a gentleman named Graham,
demo'ing Imperial Skies (Link: Brigade Models.co.uk - Imperial Skies. Graham on the left, with the white beard):

Note: The gentleman in the middle was the person who fell in love with Wog, later in the day, while I was explaining the game mechanics. Cool.

Graham's table was three down from mine, right in front of Curious Comics:

Graham on the left, with Mike in the background at the end of the table. According to Graham, it is all David Manley's [David Manley] fault he is addicted to Imperial Skies. Also according to Graham, David did some of the sculpts on the ship models for the game. Graham asked me to say 'Hi' to Dave if and when we crossed paths while I am touring Europe this year (Prague or Doncaster).

As a tally, I had a partial and a full game of BSG with two people, talked about BSG with another two or three, and despite not setting up Tripods, the display attracted a few quiet readers, and got a few people asking questions about Tripods/WoG.

One conversation would have made a sale, on the spot, if Curious had a set in the store (Gentleman in the image above, with Graham). I may see him at the Museum next week, during my 'Last Saturday of the Month' demo, or at Curious ComiCon Nanaimo on 4 May.

Another couple were admiring the the pictures of the planes on my display, which lead to me showing off some planes. They were very interested, although it was for a grandson who lived in Campbell River, a city North of Comox by another 40 minutes (Nanaimo being South of Comox by an hour). I mentioned that I was from Comox, and that I was doing a demo at the Air Force Museum next Saturday, and gave them a card, saying anyone was welcome to come. I may have a visit from the grandson.

Pretty good day's fun, all in all.

    Very well done, that man.

Hope you get more interest at your next demo.

It is Family Day weekend, here in BC. The mall was actually very sparcely attended for a Saturday, so most people were out doing other things, perhaps.

Curious ComiCon Nanaimo, on 4 May this year, will be a zoo. Last year, there were an estimated 4000 people through the mall, if not all for the ComiCon. As a free-to-enter event, there are a lot of looky-loos. But, for exposure to demo games, it is a great place to push my version of cocaine. I expect be very busy for that event. I just hope I can get a partner or assistant to allow showcasing both BSG and Tripods, together. Fingers crossed.
